carbon fiber repair
i recently recieved my hood from CARisma . the corner of the hood on one side where it comes to the windshield is cracked. the damage seems to be relatively minor and looks to be repairable. the cracking is limited to about one inch of the corner and is a result of pressure being applied in a downward motion on the corner. i have purchased clear epoxy in hopes that i can repair the corner. has anyone done this kind of repair before and am i on the right track? returning this hood is not an option at this point, and i recieved $200 off the price because of the damage and the six week wait time. i just want to know how to repair the damage as best as possible.

Does the Crack go all the way through the hood? If it does not then there is some glue that will work to seal the crack. Standard CA, as mentioned above, will whiten. You will have a whitel line where the crack was.
If the crack go all the way through the hood, then you will need to fix the hood in a more intensive way. Here is a list of material you will need: *fiberglass mat or woven cloth *polyester resin and hardener *disposible gloves *disposible plastic cups *resin dye (optional) You want to do all of your work on the back of the hood. Set up some saw horses wrapped in towels to rest the hood on so that it does not create more mess. You then need to sand a "v" centered on the crack. you want to make the "v" pretty wide, and not very deep. You dont want to actually break throught the top side. Once you have your "v" you need to fill the void. I would personally use a mixture of the resin you bought, and cut fiberglass strands. Be careful with the fiberglass or you will be picking it out of your hands for days. Cut the fiberglass into like .75-1" strands. mix the strands with the resin in a cup until you have a fairly chunky paste. Make sure you got the resin and hardener mix correct. If the resin is too cold it will never get hard and you will have to clean it out and start over. You may also want to add some black resin coloring so that the patch looks as close to the color of the back hood as you can get it. You want to add just enough of the paste to fill the V you sanded. Make the top a little lower than the rest of the hood. Once the resin and glass dried (~4 hours) you will want to add another layer of glass of the hood. Instead of cutting the fiberglass into strands you want to keep the fiberglass as mat, or even better, woven cloth. You will complete soak the fiberglass mat in resin and then lay it over the patch. This will give you a nice flat surface to finish prep. If you filled the V correctly with the paste and the mat, you should be at the same thickness as the origional hood. You will need to sand the fiberglass and make it smooth., then maybe a quick coat of black paint to make it invisible. That's it for my 30 second fiberglass repair guide. Have fun. Jeff |
