Default Anyone have driving lights mounted in a WRX airdam. . ?

Have a set of Hella 450 driving lights that were meant for another car but didn't pan out. Since the factory high beams on the WRX suck, I figured I might try to install them on it. However, I'm not sure what the best way/place is to mount them, and it would be helpful to see how others have done it. There appears to be a pretty solid 'lip' along the bottom of the center rectangular opening that could serve as a place for lights, but I didn't know if there would be any rigidity issues with that spot. A 'pendant' mounting hanging from the bottom of the bumper looks like it could work too, but might require I remove the front clip for access? Any info/pics would be great.

Phil

I don't have any pics, but i had lights like yours on the front at one time. i took the front plate off and used the holes as mounting points for the lights. i looked cool at first, but then i started to bug me, so i took them off. i am going to try and make them fit behind the front grill. if you want to hang them in the lower section of the front bumper, you are going to have to take it off. anything lower than the bumper might be too low anyway. you will get flashed all the time like i did. but then again, you could have deer hunted with mine, and the road reflectors glowed during the day, as well as streest signs and whatnot. i love it!

i've got a set of 550s that i'm trying to figure out how to remount. my first idea was behind the grill, but it's going to block almost all of the airflow to the radiator so i don't think it's such a good idea anymore. how big are the 450s? i might just make a light bar and wiring harnesses so i can remove the assembly and put it on whenever i feel like doing some night driving, but i haven't made up my mind yet. i might just go with smaller lights. i've got 500 driving lights in the stock fog location, but i want another set for more peripheral lighting. not sure if i want fogs or if i want driving lights angled outward a bit.

Not sure of exact dimensions, but 450s are notably smaller than 550s. I wouldn't have any concern about blocking air to the radiator when mounting them in the airdam. If it weren't so darn cold here I'd go out and play around with it a little and see what I could figure out, but even in the garage it's quite nippy. Seems like there is a lot of places they'd fit, it's just a matter of finding a solid and accessible mounting location. I'd personally like to have a permanent installation too, rather than a removable bar. Anyone else with ideas?

$30 worth of various aluminum bits from Home Depot and a day of creative cutting and assembling. There are two small pieces of square aluminum tubing attached to holes on the top of the bumper (after removing the grill). There are also two metal straps going to two bolts on top of the radiator bracket. Very solid, handled a two day TSD rally without any problems.

I have a bunch of pics from when I installed my FF300's in the air dam that I'm going to post within the next few days.
