Engine oil for turbo engine differs from regular engine oil?
It's time to change engine oil for my ride.
I am used to visit subaru dealer for doing it 'cause they told me they used a special engine oil for turbo engine. Is it true or not? Subaru dealer charges around $35 for oil change, yet I can save at least $10 if I go local service.

The only special oil they are using is on your wallet.

maybe they are putting in a synthetic (which is a good idea for a turbo)

If you've had your oil changed by this dealer before, it should say what oil they were using on your invoice/receipt.
That way we can tell you if $35 is a good price. I highly doubt the local service will do a synthetic oil change for $25. Then again, I doubt a dealer will do a synthetic change for $35. I'd change your oil for $25 and give you a nice OEM filter. Too bad it costs me that much to drive there and back Generally, Quality: Do It Yourself > Dealer > Local Place Price: Do It Yourself (cheapest!) < Local Place < Dealer Last edited by FD777; 04-28-2006 at 01:49 PM. |

Your owners manual is your friend. The manual gives all the required specs for all the fluids.

there is not special oil for motors (that i have ever seen, i been a tech for years). oil is oil. the difference is motor oil and snythetic oil. snythetic is better for performace engines. it cleans a little better. and cost more.
as long as u keep up on the oil changes you should be good. james |

Nothing special. You decide if you want to use synthetic or not. |
