Hey guys. Thinking about painting my stock OBS wheels black. I'm leaning more towards flat black, but i thought i'd get a general consensus first. Flat or gloss?
And if i were to go for the flat look, what would i need to do as far as technique and/or product that i use. Like is there a type of paint or clear coat that gives more of a matte finish? Sorry if i sound like a n00bz0rz. I am. I've only had the car for like 2 months.

Here's mine. Wasn't really trying to match the stock color but it is hard to tell the difference. Out of like 15 silver colors to chose from at Advance Auto, I chose Platinum Silver Metallic. I wet sanded first with 400, metal etch primed, re-sanded, painted, and then got my body shop guy to clear coat. The stock 06-07 WRX wheels are worse than my 02-05 WRX wheels. Just primer on the back, no paint, and no clear from factory.
My untouched spare on left above and below. |

MY02 OEM color change
Well, I found a deal on 6 OEM wheels a while back. They're 16", but will be prefect for winter. I found some tires to suit the needs of our winters, Michelin X-ICE 225/50/R16 (physically same height/width of stock 225/45/R17). They are a little wide for the 6.5" 16" wheel, but should be fine, especially since I got a good rebate on the Michelins. I tried to match the factory color of my MY10 WRX wheels as close as I could. "Graphite" was the most plentiful. So, after about $35 worth of primer, paint and clearcoat; $200 worth of TPM sensors, and ~$500 worth of tires, I have my winter set ready to go!!
Before (spare 2 wheels/tires) Primer after 3 coats! Graphite paint after 3 coats! Clearcoat after 2 heavy coats! Inside of wheel (no clearcoat) Centercaps after paint and clearcoat Ready to be mounted! Only thing left is to do is a little finishing touches to the center caps. I'm thinking of filling in the "Subaru" with blue to match the car color. Won't be long before they will need to be put on. Cold weather's coming fast! I just installed mudflaps last night. I'll have a picture show of them in the "interior/exterior" forum. Last edited by ki4syr; 09-30-2010 at 06:21 PM. |

If I want to paint a set of 02 wrx wheels gold, should I paint them white first and go with the primer, gold and clearcoat ?

Anyone have issues with sticky weight adhesion to a diy painted wheel? thinking of painting my bbs wheels but wondering if i should just do the face or remove the existing sticky weights and do the inside as well.

You should have no problem with the weights coming off, you may have a problem with the paint come time to take the weights off.
I have been running stick on weights for 2 years on self painted wheels with no problems |

Hey guys, so I'm going to paint my stocks flueorescent yellow in a few weeks. I have to take my summers off of them and put on my winter wheels. Should I take the summers off, paint them, and then get the winters put on. Or should I get the winters put on than paint them. Thanks

What kind of wheels are these?
I'm finding that I love 16x7 wheels. Slap the right tire on there and it's the most versatile combo... just like the car. It can do DD commute in comfort, or track day (summer tire), or spontaneous romp on the dirt (all season/winter/etc) |

Primer = Dupli-Color Primer Sealer Paint = Dupli-Color Gold Clear = Dupli-Color Acrylic Enamel or Clear Wheel Coating Do I need to sand after some coat of primer ? or just before... And sorry guys to ask you that, but here where I live they don't have those exact products. But in a week im going in Maine for a trip. Do someone know in which store I can find those things ? That stuff would work fine, my Quebec friend! The more you sand, the smoother it will look. I went with a 'hammered' finish so that it is rougher, and therefore hides the imperfections more.
