Default Tires... Same size, but different brand...

On sept 6th my car got into wreck and the insurance decided it's not totaled...

Anyway I just have a simple question regarding the tire replacement... Only one tire would be replaced but with a different brand.

Would this mess up my car in any way? Or this just applies to size?

nope, not a good idea. Even if they are 100% identical outside diameter NOW, that doesn't mean they will wear the same. Not to mention how much it will screw up traction having different tread types.

Why? Different brands would be... Different circumference, different traction, different dynamic reactions... You are asking for trouble not keeping ALL the tires the same, not just the brand, but the same wear.

I forget that USDM spec go all PMS and break in a spectacular and expensive fashion over the smallest variance in anything.

Don't do it, change all 4. Make your insurance do it.

I'm telling this from personal experience. Parts might or might not break but why would you take the chance? It's more so in your case since you won't have to pay a dime getting 1 tire compare to 4 tires. You don't want to have to spend $$ on parts/labor 10k miles down the road. The insurance company definitely won't cover any damage then.

Fight em, A buddy of mine got hit by a drunk driver 2 weeks ago, he was so anal about his car. That he refused to get it fixed and they decided to salvage it. You would have laughed, how small the damage was.

Hey, Put on an old non radial tire, for all intensive purposes, it will get you around without causing, maybe, a catastrophic problem. But why would you want to take a chance.???

I sell tires for a living at a major national tire & auto chain. I can tell you from experience, not just with Subarus, that AWD cars & trucks need all 4 tires replaced. The only time it's okay typically, is when there's less than 25% tread depth difference between the best tire and the worst tire. Sometimes it can't be more than 2/32" difference. I've seen a Jeep Grand Cherokee overheat the transfer case for $3000, and a Volvo XC90 for $6000. They need to be the same brand too, 'cause if you've ever seen a tire fact sheet then you know that most tires from different brands have different diameters. Not to mention different rolling resistances.

Because it hasn't been documented locally as an issue. NASIOC is the only place I've come across where people say all four have to be replaced and centre diffs explode because of one being slightly worn.

like I said, go in the glove box and find that book that came with the car that is still wrapped in plastic...

***56256;***56452; Tire replacement
***56256;***56452; Tire Replacement The wheels and tires are important and integral parts
of your vehicle's design; they cannot be changed arbitrarily.
The tires fitted as standard equipment are optimally
matched to the characteristics of the vehicle and
were selected to give the best possible combination of
running performance, ride comfort, and service life. It
is essential for every tire to have a size and construction
matching those shown on the tire placard and to
have a speed symbol and load index matching those
Using tires of a non-specified size detracts from controllability,
ride comfort, braking performance, speedometer
accuracy and odometer accuracy. It also creates
incorrect body-to-tire clearances and inappropriately
changes the vehicle's ground clearance.
All four tires must be the same in terms of manufacturer,
brand (tread pattern), construction, and size. You
are advised to replace the tires with new ones that are
identical to those fitted as standard equipment.
For safe vehicle operation, SUBARU recommends replacing
all four tires at the same time.

All four tires must be the same in terms of
manufacturer, brand (tread pattern), construction,
degree of wear, speed symbol, load index
and size. Mixing tires of different types, sizes or
degrees of wear can result in damage to the vehicle's
power train. Use of different types or sizes
of tires can also dangerously reduce controllability
and braking performance and can lead
to an accident.
***56256;***56441; Use only radial tires. Do not use radial tires
together with belted bias tires and/or bias-ply
tires. Doing so can dangerously reduce controllability,
resulting in an accident.

they don't explode... viscous based limited slip diffs operate by heating up a silicon fluid to act as a damper. if you are slipping continuously (different tire sizes) you will cook that fluid and destroy it. The diff itself will probably be fine and you may not notice a difference, but the limited slip part will be non-existent.

If you are talking clutch based diff, you have an entirely new set of problems. Those diffs have multiple clutch friction plates that have a similar problem. slip them continuously and it is like driving around on interstate with your foot on the clutch right on the edge of slipping. you drastically shorten the life.

want to see some real fun stuff? find a real 4x4 (solid transfer case) and put it in 4x4 hi, drive around with an odd matched tire and see how long until you have to go find the remains of your axle. (actually driving around like this on drive pavement too long on perfectly matched tires will usually destroy something!)
