My cousin bought a set of rims for his Acura and one of the tires had a bulge like that, though it wasn't nearly that big. We were working on our cars and he decided that it would be a good idea to pop it with a knife. Needless to say, the thing exploded and hit him with rubber shrapnel. It was loud as hell. dumbass.

That looks photoshopped. I know it isn't, but seriously, it does look like it.

Lol I see the bubbles like that all the time. One of my coworkers thought it was a good idea to set the auto pressure hose to 80 psi and see what happens. The bubble popped so loud it was like a bomb ( tire jumped in the air about 3 feet ) . Terrible idea, especially if the rim is damaged. Another horrible situation...don't see this one much.. A kid tried installing 16 inch tires on a 16.5 inch rim, they fit snug but when he went to install/ inflate he was standing over the assembly. Needless to say the assembly exploded about 15 feet in the area after the beads where seated, made him deaf in one ear, and needed serious surgery on his elbow

You can tell if you have the 16.5 measuring tool , but I'm sure you know that most people will neglect to check with that. You can only really tell the difference by the angle of taper on the rim flange. I've only seen .5 sizes maybe three times in seven years

HMMWV's are 16.5, but the wheels are 2 piece.

Speaking of split rims...
My father and I picked up a free 1ton 71' Dodge Powerwagon after it sat for 20 years back until the mid-90s. The truck was so heavy, it had sunk up to its axles in red clay. It had been used for 44k on a Safari trip in Africa, and put away. Preparing the truck for Africa involved modifying the 318 to burn the low octane fuel of the country. If fired up with 20 year old fuel and a new battery. The truck was running... Why not try to move it out of the clay while it was wet? Dana70's front and back and 4.88 gears, "It was built for Africa... and should be just fine" were the last words... The end result, was a stripped rear ring/pinion, and a lock ring in two pieces. One 200 feet away, the other was impaled an oak tree. That might have been the scariest moment of my life, until... When we brought the remaining five wheels into a salvage yard that was willing to deal with them, they treated them like time bombs. The forklift driver had one ring explode just as he put it in the cage due to heat. I had just turned around with a smile and sigh of relief, and BOOM... That was the second time I nearly crapped myself. |

Two of my buddies are supposed to be putting studs in their new snowmobile tracks one night. They bought the studs with the plastic backers, which are supposed to be torqued to 32 INCH-POUNDS. But they can't read directions.
Buddy 1 says to me,"We keep crushing and breaking the backers when we torque them down." Me "The torque wrench is in foot pounds" Buddy 1 to 2 "We weren't doing anything wrong, the stupid torque wrench is in the wrong scale" Buddy 2 says "How many inch pounds in a foot pound?" |
