Default F1 cars, what is that noise?

Dont you love posts like this. I am going to attempt to describe a sound using only typing. I could go search the net for a video or audio clip with the sound I am asking about, but that would be too easy for OffTopic.

The sound I am referring to is the high pitched whine that all of them make. You can especially hear it during downshifts.

I saw a video on a while back that showed a guy in a Ferrari 355 following an F50GT1 around a race track. Fontana speedway I think. That F50GT1 made the same sounds.

My first thought is the transmission. Maybe a straight cut sequential gear box, but then I thought, rally cars dont make that noise. They have straight cut sequentials. Is it a high rpm only thing? I know F1 cars rev very high and rally cars do not.

So maybe thats the reason. Can anyone confirm this, or tell me what the sound is?

Good Luck and may OT be merciful on my soul.

J

I always thought it was because of overpressurized boost fluid.

It's from overworking the carburetor belt.

i think that it is from the extremely volitile brake light fluid. or it could be the shifter shims.

It's the stereo, it picks up interference at high RPMs.

umm engine at 10000+ RPM makes funny noises Is the car your thinking of have any sort of forced induction? I know some F1 cars have a nice fat turbo on them so that could be part of it and the gearboxs would most likely have straight cut gears for strength and that would give you a loud whine also.

I thought the new rules outlawed shifter shims. If it was the "old" F1 series I was talking about then yeah.. sure, its the shifter shims.

The top shelf F1 engines, 3.0 liter V10 normally aspirated can rev almost to 20,000 rpms. Nobody knows how high actually because the engine manufacturers keep it secret. Who knows what sort of noises are made at that speed.

That has got to be the most absurd explanation that I have ever heard about the whining noise.

Turbos... Engine noise... Gearbox!?

You sir, have NO clue. Refer to the other answers in this thread for a better understanding.

[Edit: You and Ferg must share the same brain. Sheesh, what will you two come up with next?]

There hasn't been engines with turbos in F1 since 1988, when a twin turboed V6 was the thing to have.

See what you get for trying to post serious answers?

Even I knew that F1 cars aren't allowed to have turbos anymore.

Booooo!!! Hissssss!! Bad form! The difference is that you tried to pretend you knew what you were talking about. Now you are trying to pretend that you weren't pretending to know what you were talking about.

Cut your losses. Live to fight another day.
