I don't think it would be wise to do a trade-in of such a new vehicle. You will be taking the first 2 full years of depreciation and the value loss caused by the crash.
Any accident plays a huge role in the trade-in appraisal. If it has a bad CarFax it makes it very hard for us to re-sell it. So we have to ball-park what we can expect at auction and hope that we are spot on with our appraisal.

I would definitely recommend pursuing a diminished value claim. It is becoming more common now that people are aware of it. The process mat be time consuming, so keep that in mind.
Quality of the repair is key, so choose your repair facility wisely. If any cutting/welding of the quarter panels is necessary, this is considered "unibody" damage, and is what you should be most concerned about. Unibody damage is what most appraisers are concerned about, because they will disclose this at auction if they know what's good for them. It will almost always show on a Carfax report as well. Good luck with everything, whichever path you choose. For what it's worth, I would definitely keep the car for some time, the loss will be painful. |

First and foremost, focus on getting the car repaired properly. Nothing else matters more than this. Remember, the quality of the work will dictate the value lost, not to mention the appearance/performance of a car that you will most likely be driving for a few years.
After the repairs are complete, you can contact a few local dealers to see if they can assist you. Most will be happy to. They can give you a good idea of what the car would be worth with the repairs completed, and what it most likely would have been worth without. Your insurance company will most likely want a few estimates. Make sure that before you sign off on any release from the insurance company, that you have talked to them about the diminished value. They should also be willing to guide you. Again, best of luck. |

I am getting ready to purchase an Impreza via VIP but I will be trading in an 2008 Equinox (46k miles) to severe the last ties to my exwife. It has a wear hole in the driver side floormat, minor seat stains from kids drinks, and cosmetic damage to the chrome on one rim. So my questions...
1) Autotrader lists similar vehicles for 18-21K, but the initial trade in offer was $13k from the dealer. How much room do I have to negotiate up typically based on y'alls opinion? I am also going to stop buy the Chevy dealer and see what a straight sale will net me. Carmax is around 80 miles away so that seems out of the question. 2) Beyond a car wash, vacuum and wipedown... is a further detailing typically worth the return on investment? 3)Is going to the local pick and pull for a floormat and rim replacement going to drastically raise the car's worth? Ideally, I would love $15k+ for my trade but is that being realistic on my part? |

Need more info on the Equinox to give you any sense of what it is worth.
Is it FWD or AWD? What series? And I wouldn't spend any significant money on detailing, just make sure the car looks like it was well taken care of. Don't even worry about the floor mat and wheel, the dealership can get them taken care of inexpensively. |

I knew I forgot to add some details. It is an LT, FWD, with sunroof, side curtain airbags, roof crossbars and pioneer 6 disk mp3 stereo factory upgrade.
Thank for the info so far. It is good to know that I don't have to go nuts preparing it more than my everyday stuff. |

Honestly, I don't think you've got much room to move up. It looks like they are giving you all the money. You can certainly try, but if you are using a buying service for the purchase, most of the profit is already gone, so there's little room for negotiations on the trade.
The offer that they have made you is a fair one, based on current auction activity. I hope that helps, and best of luck. |

A car a dealer took in on trade is sitting on their lot right now with a 22k "sale price". Thats about 1-2k under kbb. I know the previous owner and know they gave him 19k for it when he traded it in. How much will they be happy to make off of it. Is 22k out the door reasonable?

Information on special orders
I recently special ordered a 2012 Impreza Sport Limited from a dealer. They quoted me 6-8 weeks for arrival. I waited about 3 weeks, then called my salesperson for any updated ETA (I plan on selling my current vehicle outright rather than trade if possible, so I'd like to know when the new car is arriving so I can coordinate my attempt to sell my car rather than trade it). She said she didn't have any more info for me. I contacted SOA customer service, not to complain, just to see if they could provide any more info to me. The rep at SOA said that they couldn't find a VON for me from my dealer. So he took my name, number and email and said he'd look into it and get back to me. Does this sound like my order wasn't placed? Any advice would be appreciated.

One of my customers had me raise their Out The Door Price to end in 3's? They had some kind of weird belief in numbers.

Asian? I've had to adjust pricing to end in 7's before, but never 3's.
My mother in law is from Taiwan, they have all kinds of funky superstitions... I get crazy offers daily for cars. Sometimes $20K or more off of asking price. With no support for the offer, just "well that's what I'm willing to pay". People are a trip sometimes. Why even bother??? |

That's why I always walk into a dealership with a pre-approved bank check. I usually have a reasonable number in my head when I'm looking. I research trade in value vs retail value. For instance I just bought an 08 Subaru legacy limited. They wanted 14.5k, the retail was right around 17k, I offered 13.9k OTD price they kind of haggled a little bit. Once the manager found out I was sitting on a blank check, the deal was struck I got it for my price. It's really a buyers market if you can support your talk.

Mmmmm, yes and no. Mostly no, to what your saying.
Financing or Cash makes absolutely no difference to me selling a car. My Finance Dept would rather you Finance. They will get a flat rate "bonus" for signing you up with what ever program you choose. My Mgt team would like your money either way. If I paid 13.9 for the car. You are offering me 13.9 OTD. I'm not gonna take a loss on the deal to make you happy. I still would have had to invest some money in the 13.9 to make the car road worthy. We will lose deals daily because people have false notions of new and used values for cars. It has been a steady thing for a few months now of people throwing rediculous OTD figures at us for Impreza and Forester models. Just because you have done your research on cars and it is "your" market, doesn't mean that you know what I paid for a trade-in. Nor what I have put into the vehicle. Nor where my breaking point is and where I have to send it to auction. |

Nope. Not asian. She was an awesome young lady in Non-Profit work.
The catch was once she got into Finance it turned out I missed a DC fee. So what was only a 10 or so dollar difference tunred into an over 80 dollar difference. So she ended up going with the "actual" OTD figure. Quote:

Profit. Plain and simple.
Service and Parts are the only "real" profit generators at dealerships. Some stores will be worse and some better than others. We are usually pretty spot on with whatever Subaru has for pricing. There have been times where I would go to Parts with a customers request for something that I had quoted per Subaru and my stores "price" was higher. I would then make them honor the price I had already given that came from Subaru directly. |
