rim paint
Just curious if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations for painting rims?
Basically score um, clean um, mask, then paint. However what's the best paint to use that will last through the winter and not being to flake after a few weeks?

with the rocks and debris on the roads here man, good luck having paint last.
My alloys took a beating. I'd hate to see what painted wheels look like. |

I mean Isaac did a good job on his they looked great in may saw um over labor day and they were rough. Just kinda thinking if I score, prime, 4 coat, then clear they should do fine if I can minipulate a 70 degree structure.

I touch mine up with the duplicolor rim paint usually before I put em on every season so it definetely takes a beating. I scuffed mine and then used a great trick using playing cards to mask the tires off and applied a few coats of graphite then a few cans of clear on top.

Am I better off using custom mixed rattle cans from napa to get the color I want or should I just use duplicolor? I'm curious what brand of paint cures the best to rims.

I think you should just plan on painting them every year... otherwise, powder coat

I can buy a rattle can for about 20 bucks. Plus I'm buying the wheels I am cause they have tires on them already. I didn't wanna pay the reducilous amount to mount and balance.
I can be said and done around 50 bucks on this projects and if next year I wanna do it again i'll powder coat I just want to paint something I miss it. |

I believe thats how much they charged for my 16 inch WRX wheels. I removed the center caps and valves so I dunno if they cut me a deal. I plan on having my winter rims done next year. Still dunno what color though.

scuff them up good and put on a good layer of primer. then do several thin coats and just keep getting heavier ont the coats till they start getting glossy. let them dry in a nice warm place for a week or so before putting them on too. it will let them cure better.
btw playing cards stuck around the bead of the rim works great for masking off the tire. |
