I'm going to school for Biochemistry. It's a tough thing to pick a career as a scientist (going to get my Ph.D) or do medical research as a doctor (MD).

It is a lot more work. A lot more. The thing about medical school is that the material isn't really that intellectually challenging, there's just a lot of it. For example, in my 11 week anatomy course I pretty much had to memorize a 1500 page textbook and be able to visualize every single thing in the human body in three dimensions... every single nerve, blood vessel, muscle, etc. It feels like you are force-feeding your brain. A common comparison is that a semester of medical school is equivalent to an entire masters degree. Currently I am in cardiology and in this four week course I pretty much need to memorize a 350 page textbook and know everything there is to know about nutrition. It is basically torture, but the nice thing is that there really isn't BS anymore. In college I had to do the dumb course requirements, like a social science, an art, three semesters of languages, etc. In med school everything is applicable to your future career as a physician, down to the minute details. If you prescribe a patient furosemide for their hypertension and they get joint swelling and pain, you should remember that the drug likely caused hyperuricemia, giving the patient gout. I would say the biggest downside is that I am not able to really start my career until I'm in my early 30s. I'm 23 now and went to med school immediately after college. I still have two years left after this year, then 3-5 years of residency before I start making a decent amount of money. In the meantime I pay ~$60k/year and have to mooch off of my parents. It sucks being a dependent when you're 23 and your friends are engineers and whatnot making decent salaries already. You know, I'd like a downpipe and could pay for it, but if my engine explodes my parents will pay and it's not their responsibility. In the end though I can't imagine doing anything else with my life so it is 100% worth it. Also this way I can get a new Z06 You're welcome to PM me if you have any other questions or want to know about the application process etc. Last edited by mrkyle3; 09-07-2013 at 04:25 PM. |

As a senior who just applied to college for chemical engineering, I can't fathom waiting ten more years to start working. I'm planning on having a co-op within two years and solid year-round employment after I graduate with a masters in five or six. Keep up the work, man, because I know I wouldn't be able to stand it. If you truly have a passion for medicine, go for it. |

The thing about biochemistry is being a scientist has no good income stability like a physician. Good luck at medical school, it sounds exciting of all the things you learn, but a nightmare. I bet all the hard work will pay off soon! I feel screwed for not taking anatomy in college if you have to do all that memorization. :S |

Also don't feel screwed for not taking anatomy, because college anatomy won't even be close to the amount of information and you'll forget most of it anyways by the time you get to medical school My advice is do what you are passionate about. You will regret it for the rest of your life if you go into a field only because of job security. If you were trying to go into publishing or something I might give different advice, but research is definitely a big field. As long as you work hard you will get a job. You can also have great job security as something like a professor when you get tenure. It is definitely true though that physicians have some of the best job security of any job, and they are very well compensated (deservedly so, in my opinion). Quote:
