Default Robert Kubica airlifted to hospital after crash

http://au.eurosport.com/formula1/kub...52/story.shtml

Quote:
Polish Formula One driver Robert Kubica was flown to hospital after a high speed crash while competing in a rally in Italy, his Renault team have confirmed.

A team spokeswoman said Kubica, Renault's leading driver and a race winner in Canada in 2008 with his former BMW-Sauber team, was conscious but gave no further details.
The Italian news agency ANSA reported, however, that the 26-year-old had suffered serious injuries with little more than a month to go before the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.
"Lotus Renault GP driver Robert Kubica suffered an accident at high speed this morning while competing in the Ronde di Andora Rally," the Renault statement said.
"The driver was airlifted to Pietra Ligure Hospital, where he is currently undergoing medical checks. His co-driver is fine.
"Lotus Renault GP will issue another statement as soon as more information is known about Robert's condition."
Renault have Brazilian Bruno Senna and France's Romain Grosjean as their official third drivers. Senna competed last season for the HRT team while Grosjean started seven races for Renault in 2009.
Neither has ever scored a point in Formula One. Kubica's race team mate is Russian Vitaly Petrov, who made his debut last season.
ANSA said Kubica was heading to the start of the Ronde di Andora event near Genoa in a Skoda Fabia when the car went off the road and hit a church wall.
The co-driver Jacub Gerber got out unhurt while Kubica had to be extracted by firemen.
Kubica, a keen rally fan who has entered several events previously, tested the new Lotus-backed Renault in Valencia last week ahead of the Formula One season which starts in Bahrain on March 13.
The Pole walked away virtually unscathed from a massive crash in Canada in 2007 but still bears the scars of a serious road accident as a passenger in 2003 that left him with titanium bolts in his arm.
One forum I read this on talked about the possibility of Kubica's arm having to be amputated but there's no basis for this from what I can find.

EDIT: Comments on the above story indicate one of his hands might be severely injured to the point of needing amputation.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor...53226224_x.htm, doctor is saying that its too early to make an assessment, but doesn't deny it either. We talk about Webber having bad luck, but for massive shunts, it seems that Kubica wins the prize

This is so sad.I was rooting for him this season.Kubica certainly seems invincible. While most drivers are setback after huge shunts like the one he had in Canada,he just came out of it a better driver.

I feel terrible for Kubica. I really think he could contend for a WDC in a top level car.

Now who do Renault replace him with? I know Senna is the reserve driver but I just can't see Renault running Petrov and Senna for an extended period of time. Are we going to see Raikkonen, Heidfeld, or someone else that has multiple seasons experience behind the wheel?

Kubica suffers multiple fractures

Robert Kubica looks set to miss the start of the new Formula 1 season after suffering multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand in a crash on the Ronde di Andora rally on Sunday.

The Polish driver was airlifted to hospital on Sunday morning following a high-speed crash that took place 4.6 kilometres into the opening stage of the event, on a stage near the village of Testico in Italy.

Kubica is understood to have swiped a wall and hit a crash barrier in a Super 2000 Skoda Fabia on the first stage of the rally - which he was competing in shortly after completing the first week of pre-season F1 testing with Renault at Valencia.

According to sources at the event, Kubica was trapped in the car for more than one hour until specialist extraction equipment could get to the scene of the crash.

There are unconfirmed reports that Kubica's injuries were caused by the end of a crash barrier penetrating the car - which would explain why his injuries were on his right hand side rather than by the door.

After being transferred to the Santa Corona Hospital in Pietra Ligure, Kubica underwent surgery on Sunday afternoon for the injuries he suffered - with doctors believed to be focusing their efforts on his injured hand.

According to a statement issued by Kubica's Renault team, he has been diagnosed with multiple fractures to his right arm, leg and hand. The hospital is expected to issue a statement about Kubica's condition later on Sunday, while his manager Daniel Morelli is scheduled to hold a press conference.

Kubica's injuries look almost certain to prevent him starting the season for Renault, with the first race of the campaign due to take place in Bahrain on March 14.

Renault will likely call on reserve driver Bruno Senna to fill in in the short term, but the team could opt for a more experienced driver if Kubica faces a more lengthy lay-off.

The team has said they would run Senna if he can't test/race.

There is wildly varying reports of what injuries he suffered. I will wait to hear something official.

Hope he has a full and speedy recovery.

Jesus. That video explains it all and I don't need to know a word of Italian. When you can see daylight thru the firewall (0:22), it tells a lot.

That also does not at all equate to what I expected from "hit the wall of a church". I was expecting it to be up against a building.

Looks like the fire department needed to remove pretty much the entire dash and controls to get him out as well, from the quick glances I could see.

One of the fire blogs I visit has a regular submitter who sends stuff in from Italian FDs. I'll see if he has any translations of what's happened.

Daniele Morelli (Kubica manager) said that the main task of doctors is now restoring the functioning of his right hand. The whole operation should be completed by 21 (3pm) and soon should be held a press conference

That makes me more nervous Went from 14:30 to 15:30...now we'll get an update at 19:00, seems like its more serious than they first thought. I'm sure he'll live, but it seems like his F1 career might be toast.

NM, seems they did update:

Hope they are able to repair his hand, but if it is massively injured, he will probably have life long deficits.
