First traffic ticket in Illinois. Any ideas on how to proceed?
So I was trying to make a left turn at a green/yellow/red left turn signal and I started following the car in front of me. The last thing I remember was the light being yellow and then I was totally concentrating on the car in front. I suppose the light must have turned red as I was in the middle of my turn because after that I saw cop lights in my rear view mirror and he gave me a ticket.
My options are: 1) $75 fine (obviously not going to do this) 2) $115 fine and driving school to avoid the ticket to be on my record 3) Plead not guilty and go to court. Do any of you have any advice on how best to handle this situation?

Option 2 is your best bet. No one does this but you are supposed to stop at the line when turning left. You should only cross the line when the road is clear to make your turn. So going to court to fight it would be pointless. Pay the fine and take the school, you can normally do the school on-line. Its easy to do but will take you about 4 hours to complete.

Go to court and ask for the 115 plus traffic school. If the cop doesn't show, you will get off by pleading you didn't do it.
Worst case is you get option 2. |

yeah i guess the reason for a ticket is a little bogus, most likely popo wont sho, go to court.
just compare the cost of taking off work, going to court to fight it with possible traffic school, versus the cost of paying for the ticket and doing traffic school. |

Why were my options different? I had to pay $95 and go on supervision. All I had to do was mail in the ticket/fine. It better not be on my record!

Well, option 1 is a straight up fine with the ticket going on my record. I don't want to do this because my insurance would increase. It seems like this is what you did though.

I suggest going to court.
It is not a violation crossing the intersection on yellow. Even if it turned red after you already proceeded, you had to complete your turn through the intersection to avoid blocking traffic. |

This is not correct. As stated previously, when waiting for a left turn at a green light, you must stay behind the white line until there is no more oncoming traffic. If oncoming traffic is still steady and you are in the middle of the intersection, you are in the wrong. You are somewhat correct when you say that it is not a violation crossing the intersection when yellow. If he was going straight and the light changed to yellow, provided he didn't increase his speed, then he would be alright. If you keep your steady speed and proceed through the light as it turns yellow, you're all good. They make the solid white lines for a reason...to stay behind them until it is your turn to proceed. Not trying to start anything, just trying to keep the facts straight.
Just pay the $115, do the traffic school thing, and be done with it. From what I've seen, most lawyers will charge at least that, plus the costs of the ticket, so it's not worth it. Good luck! |

I just tested on that section of the IVC and I don't remember seeing instructions for staying behind the yellow line while waiting for a left. I will see my instructor this afternoon and will confirm. Just to make it clear, I stated that if he was proceeding to make the left turn and the light turned red mid-turn he is not in violation. If he gunned it for the sole purpose of beating the light, then he would be cited. But in that case the ticket should be for unsafe speed for conditions. And the other option is if he entered the intersection on red, which I think the PO thought he did. Take it to court anyway. |

What exactly is the ticket for? Failure to obey a trafic signal? (ie. blowing a red light)
If so, plead not guilty and tell the judge that you were in the intersection prior to the light changing. The way the law works, you have to be within the intersection before it turns red in order to not be blowing a red light, though you may have to word it as such when talking. The nice thing about BS tickets is that the cop won't likely remember anything come court day, especially compared to the single person whom he gave the ticket. Say you were in the intesection waiting to turn and you were obviously there before the light was red -- though I'm unsure on implications regarding entering the intersection to wait to turn, but I'm pretty sure it's not illegal. |

I think a judge would be more pissed he wrote a ticket for an offense like that anyway. Try court and if the cop is there, tell them you were in the intersection before it was red.

I got a ticket for this as well. The explanation I was given by the judge was that you are supposed to stop behind the line at a light, inching into the intersection is actually technicaly not allowed.

Always go to court!!! If you go to court there is a chance that the cop won't show. If this happens, it will be dropped. Worse case scenario, the cop shows and you get traffic school anyway. You might possibly even get a smaller fine or plain supervision without traffic school!!

supervision is basically a way for you to plead no contest. meaning, you pay the fine and if you go lets say 3 months without another ticket then it won't go on your record.
Easiest and most simple way to go. |

Honestly has a repeat graduate of driving school its not that bad. Its usually in some yuppie hotel in a room that they rent out corporations. The chairs are comfortable and you get breaks like every hour. Its just a pain because they send you far as **** away and make you sit there for like 8 hours. But there is always plenty of fine brauds so it all works out
