I have always loved Subarus, but could never afford one until three years ago when I purchased my 04 PSM WRX. I drooled over the first WRX that came out late 2001 and have been in love ever since. Here is a little story about my girl (Shes My Daily Driver, too).
After building up a 2004 PSM WRX to stage 3 and a being an idiot with a 2005 PSM STi, I had to find a GC8. After four months of no car and hitching rides with friends, I found my RSTi. I flew to Utah to test drive her and two days later we settled on a price. Then the day after, the owner stated the oil pressure was low, he did a leak down test and discovered the engine was pretty much gone! He then replaced the short block with one that they had in their shop, fired her up and discovered there was a bent valve. We had decided on a delivery date of 10 days from settling on a price. I then scheduled a mini road trip with my girlfriend around flying up to pick up my new car and driving back to San Diego. With the unforeseen engine problems, this did not happen. The owner was a great guy and was very sympathetic to the situation and purchased a rental car for us, so our vacation would not be ruined. My RSTi was delivered from Scott (Brood), two weeks later (four months after totaling my STi). I am very honored to own this RSTi and am enjoying making the car my own. Over the last four months, I have been working on cleaning up imperfections and making the car my own, as some things were already complete on the car when purchased. I would have loved to find a chassis to do a swap with myself, but I was in the process of moving, had no place to put either the donor or GC chassis. I love doing all the work myself, but this was one time I had to jump on a deal for a beautifully, cleanly swapped GC. First, I started on cleaning the engine bay, due to the multiple years of living in Salt Lake City, UT. I discovered very quickly, simple green would not be doing the trick. I then proceeded to paint all the fluid covers, took apart the battery tie down (lots of rust) and refinished it, sanded down and polished lots of bolts/screws, install hood struts, replace the battery, clean the washer fluid reservoir, and many other things. I was in the process of taking my EMT certification course and preparing her for Subie Extravaganza, so between class (16hrs/week) and work (50hrs/week), all my "free" time was spent on working on my car. Second, I jumped into the interior. Repainted the entire center console while installing my own CARPC and customizing the front bezel to relocate the DIN slot to the top. Then, had to replace the stock RS radiator with a Koyorad Radiator (waited four weeks for delivery from Japan). Modified the stock fans to fit around all of the hard fluid lines and heat shielding from the exhaust manifold. In the process of building a fiberglass 10" sub box for the trunk to fit in the alcove on the right hand side of the trunk. Should be completed by this weekend. Immediate plans (installed within two weeks): Custom fiberglass 10" sub box in trunk, and Alpine Amps. I wasn't sure if I was going to enter, but what the hell...
This is the 5th subaru I have owned. I got my first Rs in 99 as a graduation present, then traded that for a WRX in 2001 which was featured in Modified and Japanese Performance Magazines. Everytime I had an Accident with that car I changed the body kit until I totaled it after doing an 04 conversion and wide body, only having it done for a week on January 1st 2006. I then bought my 2nd gc8 and that was totaled a week later by a hit and run driver late one night. I wasn't sure I wanted another subaru until I found this one in Jacksonville. I tried to take off of work that weekend because it was my neice's 1st B-day and I wanted to checkout the car. My boss wouldn't give me the time off, so I quit. I went up looked at the car, fell in love with it and bought it 2 days later. I brought it back home, put my old suspension on and then a week later drove it up to Philly for the Import Auto Salon, where some of my friends from Jade motorsports had their cars on display. While up there I got a call from another company I had done some contracting work for and they hired me full time. On the way back I took the scenic route through the Blue ridge parkway to have a little fun. I have had the dream of building a 22b replica for about the last 6 years. At first I didnt do much with the car, I was using it for work a lot and driving all over the state. I eventually saved up enough by Aug. 06 and found a JDM version 7 6speed with dccd at jdmspecc4u in canada. I bought that and also some 18x9.5 Gold te37's in 5x114 to go with the wide body I would eventually buy. I had the front brembos from my old car, but I wanted to swap to the 05 hubs for the stronger wheel bearings, and also so I could have the rear brembos. Those sat in a garage for about a year. I found a 04 forester xt at a local dealership which I bought so that I didnt have to use the rs for work. I ordered the 22b launsport kit through Launsport and got that in May 07. By Aug 07 I had enough for a motor. Once again I talked to Jdmspecc4u and they had a JDM ver7 motor. They told me it included everything I needed to do the swap. Except when it showed up there was no subframe or wiring harness. So I called them back up, they shipped the parts out and by September I had started the disassembly in my friends garage. I found so many other things while doing the swap that I needed, like the sway bar mounts and I couldn't seperate the rear lateral links from the stock hubs so I ordered new sti pink ones, I needed the power steering lines and found a wrx rack on ebay with them for the price of the lines new, I also got the gdb aluminum control arms for the wider track. Since the upright on the 05 is wider, I tried to modify my tein Ha's to fit. I got one done, but the bolt holes still didnt line up, so I found a deal on some 05 tein Flex with edfc, since tein wouldnt sell me just the front struts for an 05. The gdb rear top hats are a different bolt pattern from the gc, so I drilled out the holes till the new ones would fit, and bolted my old rear strut bar to the top so the struts wouldnt move around. I finally got it back on the ground sometime in Oct. or Nov. drove it around the block, and found that one of the hubs on the front was making the wheel wobble. I replaced that along with some other things and pulled it out of my friends garage and drove it over to a storage unit the end of december. I drove it a few weekends in January and found the body shop I was going to take it to for the bodywork, then on one spirited drive I started hearing this loud grinding in the transmission. I put it away and eventually got around to taking the motor back out and found that the flywheel was not tightened enough and became loose. So I ordered an act clutch and flywheel. I had wanted the engine bay color matched so since it was out and I had saved up enough for the paint I cleaned up the engine bay and had it towed over to the shop to have the exterior done. A little over a month later it was all finished, it would have been done sooner but I had to wait for the OE 22b wing and jdm aluminum hood to arrive. So the owner of the shop towed it back to my storage unit, and the next day a friend and I had the motor in and running again. The first night I took it to the car meet a girl came up to me and said "Nice car... Have you done anything to it?" We just laughed and continued on. For the last few months I have been trying to fix the little problems I have found like adding more camber in the rear and getting rid of the annoying clunks and rattles. Like the U-joint on the sti driveshaft was bad so I found an aluminum one. Unfortunately the v7 and v8 rear diff bolt patterns are different so I had to order the r160 yoke to swap onto the driveshaft. So right now the car is running pretty good. I still need to get an alignment and tune the jdm ecu to run better with the 93 octane. I wrapped the door panels to match the V8 jdm sti seats and just got the dash back from being flocked. I also need to install the dccd controller and the fuel pump controller. I drive it when I am home on the weekends and am very happy with how it turned out. Its a dream come true!! I guess I'll add mine.
I've been driving Subaru's since the 2.5RS became available in the USA. I owned an N/A BRP 2.5RS for years but I was always left wanting something more. Then I found it. I've had her for about 5 years and she's undergone many changes. I originally bought the car on eBay with a version 6 swap. It was owned by a mechanic in eastern PA who had taken the RS to Lachute Subaru in Canada to do the original swap. That configuration didn't last very long. I upgraded to a 20g and FMIC, added a standalone EM and then decided to stop pissing around and give her a nasty powerplant - an Axis 2.5 liter block with forged internals. My goals have always been to have a balanced power band with a versatile setup for any conditions - drag/track/road. But more than anything, I am in it for FUN. Not too much show here, just lots of go. Cars are meant to be driven. That said I have my share of "rare" parts and I haven't been all that spend conscious... as long as my wife is ok with it! Current goal is to break into a 10 second 1/4 mile run on straight 93 octane. I'm very confident it will happen as soon as I install the new clutch. Engine is currently hanging from a hoist in my garage waiting... So here she is, in full glory. Driven polished and clean in the summer, and dirty and salty in the winter wearing sleeper shoes. Under the hood: On the dyno: VIDEO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8WzMPI1ii0 Specifications: Engine/Drivetrain/Ancillaries Axis/RAW "Stage 3" shortblock, ACL bearings, coated pistons Version 6 JDM Type-RA large port heads Kelford 272/272 cams Garrett GT3076R 0.82A/R (3-inch outlet) Perrin EL header TiAL 44mm EWG VTA Lateral FMIC/radiator Carbotron carbon fiber intercooler piping (custom made by glhs377) Helix titanium exhaust Cosworth 12mm high flow oil pump Moroso oil pan Apex'i PowerFC ECU Apex'i AVCR Version 6 5-speed with DCCD, PPG 1-4 straight-cut gears, 3.9fd, R180 rear end Cusco RS 1.5-way rear diff (R180) RPS custom twin disc carbon clutch - expected to arrive shortly! Suspension/etc Leda Coilovers, custom "fast-road" spec Group-N everything (top mounts, engine mounts, tranny mount, etc.) Alu control arms STI lateral link set Cusco swaybars Cusco chassis braces f/r STI carbon strut tower brace Cusco rear triangulated strut tower brace Subaru 4-pots w/DBA 2-piece rotors, Ferrodo DS2500 pads OZ Superleggeras w/RE01r for summer, RS 6-spoke with Blizzak WS-50 for winter (note, blizzaks + WOT = rear end smearing all over the road) Pretty stuff Genuine Prodrive RB5 rear wing STI Version 6 body conversion - front lip, skirts, spats, grille, etc. EDM 2002 WRX seats - the best Subaru seats ever Version 6 dash, everything working including IC spray and DCCD Defi 60mm gauges with genuine Defi pod Misc Braille battery JDM front & rear aluminum bumper beams aluminum hood A/C system removed Zeitronix AFR/EGT There are probably a few things that I missed but that is the important stuff off the top of my head. She's been my baby since the day I bought her. I've spent waaay to much time and money on her but I don't regret it one bit. I drive her whenever she is running and I drive her very hard. Over the years I've replaced pretty much everything in the car. I've used multiple suspension setups, MAF vs. MAP setups, turbos, differentials and drivetrain components, gearsets, etc. I only ever settle on what is the strongest and best balanced. I've spent countless hours road tuning and have literally hundreds of map revisions. Throttle response is excellent and top end power is smooth as butter. The motor shines - I can run 24psi on 93 octane all day long. The gears whine terribly and the diff chatters. The EWG sounds like a screaming banshee. She's noisy as hell and eats dirt and asphalt and anything I can throw at her. Truly a street rally car on steroids and ultimately, a hell of a lot of fun! UPDATE: Here's an old video of some fun in a parking lot... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfWWfI-A2Ws Last edited by dmross; 11-14-2008 at 12:35 AM. Reason: spelling, clarity |

I edited my photos to add 2x old autocross shots. Looking to get back into the track scene soon, show scheduling should be a bit less in the next year or so =D For those who are curious about the entire 3 tone build process (from tearing the car down, to paint, etc), here was the master build thread! http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1342104 |
