Default Raise your hand if you've broken a 5mt transfer gear!

So I have a huge decision. I need to decide between a PPG front lsd and a PPG transfer gear. Before I can just say do one or the other, I need to make sure one shouldn't be replaced before the other. Andrew at Andrewtech suggested to do the front lsd first so that's what I will be doing. Reason being the transfer gear can be replaced with the tranny still in the car. Less work, easy as that. I guess im just looking for people to say, YES, you NEED to do the transfer gear as well with your power levels. This way I can convince myself to stop being cheap and just do both.

Soo, I wanted to know who, if anyone, has broken a 5mt transfer gear. If so, how much power were you making? What caused the transfer gear to break? etc, etc...

Any information will be greatly appreciated!

I broke mine in an 03' wrx 5mt. I have no idea why because I was driving it normal making about 240 wtq. I would never do hard or aggressive clutch engagement, but just wait until clutch was fully engaged and then stomp on it, and with the short wrx first gear and a smaller turbo, it would hit hard almost violent. So no shock load other than torque coming on fast while accelerating.

The tranny just had a loud whine almost like it was built, but it wasn't and it was getting louder. It still shifted fine, but it worried me so I pulled it and found the transfer gears had a bunch of chips out of the teeth. If I were you, I would replace them while your at it. I know upgrades can get out of control and the money your spending just snowballs, but I think on this, you will seriously kick yourself down the road if they don't hold up. Plus you will have a built tranny and still be worried all the time. Do it for the piece of mind!

Mostly drag racers break those and then only high HP ones unless there is a fluke.

Thx morrocco. Andrew said that even if I break it, it's an easy fix and it could be done with the trans still in the car. I wouldn't mind fixing something that is broken, but fixing something isn't broken makes me want to hold onto my money.

Unabomber, andrew said the same thing. Mostly the transfer gears go on the launch IIRC.

anyone else?

I was planning on doing the samething. Do front LSD(not only for strength but its just better overall) and do center/transfer later or if it breaks. This way you don't break the bank right away and go home crying

I used to on my old Impreza GT'99 (Europe market).
But I think that was due to previous 'driver' with drag racing 'skills'
