It's been a month since I got Milo, and I'm no longer afraid of getting animal protection called on me. He is doing really well; he's learned a lot of commands, is a big cuddler, and has finally figured out how to play!

Witherspoon went to the emergency vet clinic early this morning because she was hacking, breathingly rapidly, and was in distress. It turns out when has pneumonia. She's be at the vet overnight at a minimum. They have her on IV antibiotics and in an oxygen tent. We're praying she can come home tomorrow morning.

I just spoke with the vet a little while ago. Spoon did really well overnight and is off oxygen entirely and ready to transition onto oral antibiotics. She can come home this afternoon!

Hooray!

Colin is going in for surgery on the 15th, to have a golf ball sized cyst removed from his front leg. Been there for about a year, but it's slowly getting larger, and it'll be easier to remove and close the wound now before it gets too big.

So ****ing sad. While they've suspended the provision that will kill all pit bulls in shelters, it's obviously going to happen eventually.

Quote:
The Quebec Court of Appeal ruled Thursday in the city's favour, revoking the suspension of its new animal-control law that prevents people from buying or adopting pit-bull-type dogs not already in their possession, and requires existing owners to leash and muzzle them outdoors and buy a special $150 permit.

Parts of the law, adopted in September after a fatal dog attack in June, were suspended Oct. 5 by Superior Court Judge Louis Gouin after the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals challenged it in court.

The SPCA maintained the measures were too vague and arbitrary and would lead to the abandonment and euthanization of many dogs with no possibility of being placed. It said Thursday it was disappointed by the verdict and vowed to continue its efforts to fight "the discriminatory and punitive provisions."

"Not being able to find homes for healthy, adoptable and behaviourally-sound dogs and puppies goes against the very essence of what our organization stands for," said Alanna Devine, director of animal advocacy for the Montreal SPCA.

The Court of Appeal said Judge Gouin's ruling did not give sufficient weight to the argument the regulations were for the public good. Public interest must take precedence over anxiety an animal may feel when forced to wear a muzzle outside, the court said, and requiring a special permit was "a simple administrative formality," not an "irreparable prejudice."

But the appeal court also said the city must honour its pledge not to order the euthanization of any type of dog not specifically designated as dangerous, risky, stray, dying, badly injured or highly contagious, until Superior Court issues a final judgment that will clarify the legality of the law and some of its contested wording, notably the terms "competent authority," "risky dog," "dangerous dog," "pit-bull-type dog" and "shelter."

The guardians of pit-bull-type dogs also will be allowed, for now, to reclaim them from shelters, as long as they're not proven dangerous, and the dogs can be sent to shelters or adopted by people living outside the City of Montreal.

Mayor Denis Coderre has strongly defended the new regulations as necessary for public safety. "We will not compromise when it comes to the safety of our fellow Montrealers," he said.

In the streets of downtown Montreal on Thursday, dog owners expressed mixed feelings about the bylaw.

Kevin Gagnon, owner of a Miniature Pinscher named Mia, said "it comes down to the owner. I have a couple of friends who have ***8216;pit-bull-type dogs', and they're great owners and there are never any issues. If the breed is predisposed to being aggressive then I'm assuming that (aggression) comes out. I don't know. It's hard to generalize. But at the same time, you've got to control it. It's tough to call."

Gagnon said he has not had any problems with bigger, so-called aggressive dogs, but "there's a Rottweiler that lives (in our apartment building), and when we've encountered it in the stairwell, I just go back downstairs and take the other stairwell because it looks like it wants to eat her. But I've never had any issues."

Sylvain Lalonde, owner of a 12-year-old Border Collie named Whiskey, said "I understand those that want to control them somehow, but I'm not sure that's the right way to go."

Quintin Hellstrom, owner of a dog named Ben that is is part Labrador, is firmly against the pit-bull law. "It's the owner's fault if a dog's going to act out," Hellstrom said. He feels the bylaw was an overreaction to the death of Christiane Vadnais. who died in June after she was attacked by an aggressive dog in her backyard. "After one incident you can't really just blame the whole breed for that."

Humane Society International/Canada, in a statement, said it was "deeply saddened and disappointed" by the Court of Appeal ruling, but expressed hope it would be invalidated after further scrutiny by the courts. It said Montreal's bylaw "makes it impossible to identify" a pit-bull-type dog, putting all large dogs at risk of being seized and euthanized "at the discretion of bylaw officers."

"Our elected officials are using fear-mongering and hysteria to target harmless animals. If you look at the science, breed-specific legislation does nothing to make communities safer, and causes immense hardship to animals and people," said Ewa Demianowicz, campaign manager for the group.

Projet Montréal's animal-control spokesperson Sterling Downey said the decision "changes nothing about the fact the law on animal management in the city is inapplicable and will not reduce the number of bites." He said it also "risks causing even more confusion for dog owners."

Last year some Stowe locals suggested my wife and I take a trip to Jay and Tremblant. We were planning on going the week before Christmas with a stop in Montreal. We saw this this fall and decided Quebec can suck-it, we're doing Jay then doubling back to Stowe or Smuggs.

When will you be up there? Every February we go on vacation up to Stowe, and spend at least one day at Jay.

Well, the Spoon is back at home and seems to be doing ok. She's sleeping a lot and will be on antibiotics for at least another week, but hopefully she'll only improve from here. When she got home all she wanted to do was sit in my wife's lap and sleep.

So I have a fun one. My two dogs have started fighting on walks. Basically when Moof gets excited, you know like he's seen a squirrel or something, Finley (otherwise known as Bitch Face) attacks him. This is particularly stupid for two reasons. One. Moof is more than twice her size. Two. He always wins because of reason one. There is no contest. She's a sheltie/aussie mix and he's a ****ing Catahoula Leopard Dog. I can barely hold him back and I'm 215lbs. She's just lucky that he isn't mean. He stops when he gets her on her back but she just won't stop. Its gotten to the point that I just don't take her anymore but I hate to exclude her. Any ideas about what might be driving this?

I wish.

He's been fighting skin allergies since the spring. He had a massive hot spot on his back, so we had another trip to the vet today. Starting Apoquel tonight. The bath was a Micro Tek skin treatment, where I had to lather him up and let it sit for 5 minutes. He was barely cooperative when it came to staying in the tub for 5 minutes.

Poor fella. Our 1st dog had big time allergies. Most of it topical. We found head and shoulders worked the best believe it or not.

But, ... http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com...-allergy-drug/

I know, I know. "Homeopathic" site. But, there some truth in it. Grain of salt and all that. YMMV, etc...

Yeah, I've seen that as well. We've tried flaxseed, food changes, and a lot of topical wipes, trying to get the inflammation knocked down. Apoquel is the next step, but hopefully this won't be a regular thing. I really want to narrow down whether it's food or pollen, so we can handle the trigger and not just knock down the symptoms with drugs.

My dog was itching like crazy with the Pedigree the shelter had her on. Switched her to a lamb based food I used to feed my old dog and she wouldn't eat it. My friend brought her dog over and she loved the chicken-based food the other dog was getting so switched to that. A month or two later noticed her skin was redder than usual. Turns out she was allergic to something in that food.

Finally put her on Merrick limited ingredient salmon and sweet potato. The limited ingredient foods are good since you can really narrow down if it is a food allergy. The food is more expensive but her coat is also a lot shinier and she is less itchy.

If you don't think it's a food allergy you could always try a fish-oil supplement. BEWARE the fish farts! They can clear the room. My vet also suggested fresh coconut for the coconut oil but she wound up being VERY allergic to that.

Good luck!

If Moof is very reactive on walks and drags you around it may a good idea to focus on some leash manners for him. Take him out alone, when he sees something interesting redirect his attention to you with treats. Once he's more predictable on the leash add her back to the mix and reward good behavior. Get someone else to walk with you so you can separate them if things start escalating, then bring them closer and closer again as they calm down until they are walking side by side again. When they're behaving well make sure they know with praise and treats.

This winter is looking good - they're getting snow up there already, so probably the week before Christmas. Last year we had to beg our respective bosses to let us roll-over our vacation because early season conditions were so bad. Even with pushing it off to January, Stowe was still not great. Still had fun though. If you are looking for a nice place in Stowe, we really enjoyed our stay at the Northern Lights Lodge - nothing fancy but clean, a great value and only a few minutes from the mountain. The owner is super friendly and a great source for info on all the local mountains.

Affordable lodging is good since Stowe now charges $100+ for a lift ticket!

We actually preferred both the conditions and the experience at Smuggs - insane that they still are running only double lifts! Apparently it has to do with them being in a state park, but it really limits the downhill traffic which is nice. A while back Smuggs and Stowe were connected since they are both on Mansfield, but they stopped honoring each others' tickets and let the lifts / trails between the areas get overgrown - and since the notch road is impassible in winter you have to drive an hour to get slopes you can see right there. Frustrating but worth it if you haven't skied Smugglers Notch yet.

But the town of Stowe is really nice - if you like that type of experience definitely make a trip to Lake Placid sometime... it's a Manhattanite's vision of what an upstate New York town should look like - with prices to match, but White Face is a great mountain.

She has some valid points, but is probably overstating the risk. FWIW, is a page linked from there, she claims that 50% of dogs will get cancer (nowadays.) That's patently false. Mixed breeds have the highest rate at about 20%, and most "regular" breeds have a rate of something like 3%.

It bothers me when people claim to understand the immune system and what's good or bad for it (like suggesting it'a a good idea to boost it,) it's so complicated all of medicine barely understands it.

Yes I saw your "reader beware" statement.

Yup, last year was pretty bad, but we were (amazingly) still able to find untracked in the trees. So long as we can find that, we're good.

We always stay at Stowe Motel where we rent one of their houses. Especially since we've started bringing the dogs it's just a lot easier and more chill.

While I like Smuggs, their lifts drive me nuts! Aside from only being twins they're all so sloooooooooooow. Which makes me kind of a hypocrite since I love Bolton when they're running the Wilderness chair which is a slow twin.

One of my great joys is life is driving from the mountain straight to Picasso for their two slice and PBR special. It makes my heart sing.

Default Best dog leash ever

Hey guys I just bought a shock absorbant leash made from the same material as surf board leashes. You can custom build them and I bought an attachment so I can walk my Corgi and Australian Cattle Dog at the same time on one leash without tangling. I actually did a YouTube video review of it and got the owner (they are handmade in California) to make a discount code for anyone wants one after watching! The code is my username haha =P
Anyways check out the video and let me know what you think
