Exclamation 2008 Impreza Suspension vs. Legacy suspension vs. Tribeca suspension

Alright, I got my first glimpse at the 2008 Impreza suspension in the dealer brosures that just came out...

The front suspension does look a lot like the current legacy suspension. I suspect almost everything in the front will be compatible with Legacy parts, including the control arms (although I didnt get a good look at those yet)

The rear suspension however, is quite different... The struts in the Legacy are in front of the upper wishbone, but in the Impreza they are BEHIND the wishbone, which is interesting. The wishbone itself (if that is the correct term) is also quite different. The legacy one has one connection, while the Impreza is more of an actual wishbone with TWO connections to the subframe... This is simular to the Tribeca I believe.

Now, I just double checked, and the Impreza REAR suspension is actually almost exactly like the Tribeca, but more compact. This means that the Impreza is more like the Tribeca in terms of geometry than the Legacy, which is interesting... And kind of sucks, since there are not any aftermarket tribeca suspension components out there unlike the Legacy.

So, in short, the 2008 Impreza is more simular to the Tribeca in terms of suspension than it is to the Legacy.

As to what this means in terms of handling, I do not know. I do believe this was done to create more interior room since locating the strut farter back makes for more rear seat room. I am quite curious now how this suspension will fair compaired ot the Legacy, which some say is a better handling car now than the current Impreza...

It will handle fine... Its a traditional upper A arm double wishbone design. Its been used in sports cars for eons.

And heres the Tribeca rear suspension, which is virtually identicle to the 2008 Impreza:

That is not the Impreza suspension, thats the Legacy. Jamie even stated that in her thread. The Impreza has almost zero aluminum other than the engine/drivetrain

The new brochure for the Impreza shows the Impreza suspension, and it looks like the Tribeca design as I mentioned.

Guilty-as-charged.

My bad, sorry, missed Jamie's comment about it being a Legacy suspension. It's posted here, with no comments about it being a Legacy picture:

http://www.subiegal.com/gallerymain/...subaru_wrx.htm

And I didn't check any previous thread comments.

Sorry.

It's OK Chris- sorry for calling you a weiner

I can't hardly believe that STI doesn't have a few ideas up their sleeves for aftermarket suspension tweaks

Oh noes! And there I was all excited posting away on the LGT.com.

At the fronts might save the LGT folks some money (hopefully).

I'm curious now if this means the WRX brakes are actually Tribeca brakes, not Legacy brakes...

Another thing to consider is front suspension geometry. The legacy GT has almost 6 degrees of positive caster stock . It will be intresting to see where the WRX is.

After emailing subaru about the brakes on the 08, here is their response.

Thank you for visiting the Subaru web site and for your feedback on the new 2008 Impreza WRX models. We appreciate your feedback as it is our best source for information on how our customers feel about our products.

As you may know, the new Impreza WRX models are based on a modified Legacy chassis. As a result, changes to the brakes and other components were required to work with this chassis and to keep the development cost-effective. The brakes on the 2008 WRX models are the most powerful brakes ever offered on a U.S. market WRX, except for the STI models with Brembos. The 2008 WRX brakes carry over from the current Legacy GT/Spec.B models.

Hot damn, you actually got a crisp, clear answer! Sounds like good news to me, I'd rather have LGT brakes than 4-pots, and it wouldn't be surprising if someone made 4/2-pot adapters for the larger rotors.
