Question for all the Subaru owners...
How much is the insurance for a Impreza coupe?
And take an estimate; and how much do you think an insurance would cost for a teen that has 1 year 4 months driving record and can get a the good-student policy? And can anyone give me a estimate quote for the turbo impreza? Would the insurance increase if i should get the turbo one? And does anyone know any dealers around the south Cali. That can give me a good price?

Well the turbo will make it go up some. I have been pleased with what my rates are given what the car is. I think most insurance companies don;t understand it is a performance vehicle. I would stay away from State Farm. They screwed me out of proper claim settlement on my 86 Brat and I have never forgotten that. Hell they robbed me in all honesty. One of my missions in life is to cost them as many customers as possible.

I cannot recommend any dealers in the south but I can say that you are going to get reamed on the insurance.
Being a teenager is bad enough, but having a "sports car" (that's what the insurance co. will call an RS) will only make it worse and don't even think about the turbo model unless your parents are well off and have alot of money to spend on that kind of stuff. I don't mean to sound like an as$ here but I am 24 years old and have been through it before myself. I pay about $1200 a year for my 98RS and I expect that to drop to about $900 a year when I turn 25 at the end of this month. I fully expect to pay at least $1200 a year for the turbo being 25 years old or maybe $1500. Really stinks. |

is this a NEW or a USED car?
remember that the coverage that costs the most are collision and comprehensive. The newer the higher the collision. For a teen don't even think of a sports car. $1500 seems low. Unless you can pay off the car and take off collision, then hope u don't hit anything. |

Yes in fact it is new.. But than the again the car goes under my parents name..would this change the insurance rate? And what happens if my parents put a down payment? And my parents have a clean record.

I used Allstate during my teen years. They were always the cheapest by far. Hope that helps.

Insurance eats it. It doesn't matter what you drive, you'll be charged extra since you're under 25.
I'll break it down: Former car: 1995 Impreza L AWD sedan, 1.8L= $1700/year with 50k/100k across the board coverage. BTW, I have Progressive as my carrier. I have no accidents or tickets and live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. New car: 2001 Impreza RS, alarm, ABS, and dual airbags. Same coverage. Here's the stinger--$2400/year. That's right. Yep, its raping my bank account, but its only for one year until I'm 25. Believe me, new car insurance can cost almost as much as the car payment!! Its worth it, so long as you can afford it. Hope this helps, Matt |

What is the car to driver ratio in your household.
If your folks put the car in their name, and they put you as a primary driver on another car, you could save yourself a bundle. I have State Farm. They are by FAR the cheapest, and I pay about $1000/ year for my Suby. I'm 24, have one accident and 5 tickets on my license. It's also my first brand new car. Of course, I'm in PA...so you'll prolly pay more out in Cali for your insurance. When I was younger, I was said to be the primary driver on my dad's car, even though I never drove it. It was cheaper that way. Don't forget to add another 5K to the cost of your car for mods. |

Well SilverSuby, I dont know how to put this into ratio( or ironically this could be the answer), there are 5 cars and5 people,( i think the answer would be 1:1) then again i dont even know if one of the old cars is still under insurance, i'm positive it is though; How would a lo-jack system take off of insurance and good student policy?
My hopes of owning a 2.5RS is rising, thanks |

Call some insurance companies, including your parents, and get some quotes.
Mercury Casualty was considered one of the cheapest in a study a couple of years back. I payed around $1500 at one time with them due to being in the "assigned risk pool" (that was with the minimum leagal insurance on the car). -- Crushing your moms car leaving the driveway pissed is never a good thing Good luck -Bill |

Mwua hah hah hah. I probably pay the most for my insurance. I pay a over 3800 a year. No accidents but two out of state tickets. When I got the policy I was 20. It went down an tiny amount when I turned 21. The sad thing is my insurance (323 a month) is approaching my car payment (480 a month). When I get my WRX I'm going to have to drive it everyday lest my thinking about how much cash I'm spending on my car get's me depressed. Lol, I wish my parent's were paying for this, or even that I was on their policy. That'd save some bucks.

I bought my car when I was 20 and my rates were 2056.34 every six months. That was through Safeco insurance. They are awesome but you pay for it. I then switched to Progressive and turned 21 at the same time and it went down to 2316.00 a year. I have one non fault accident and 2 tickets on my record. If your parents will change cars around on the insurance policy, that is the way to go. You could save a bunch. Be ready to pay close to 400.00 a month on your car payment though. It probably wont be that much but figure that just to be safe. It all depends on the down payment, the interest rate, and how many years you want to pay on it. If you cant afford that then get a 2.2 Impreza and once it is paid off throw a turbo on it and have some real fun. When I was in school and had the good student discount it didnt make much difference. on my 88 Escort GT it saved me about 20 bucks a month. But 20 bucks is 20 bucks. Thats a tank of gas I guess. Good luck and I hope this helped on some way.

this is not a sports car its a compact car ...make sure your insurance company charges you that way...under your parents name, with AWD and ABS ...it shouldn't be that high

Oh yea isn't all 2 door counted as a sport compact car? I remember hearing that. So by having AWD and ABS that could lower insurance. How much would be a good Down payment?Enough so that a person with a minimum wage job could handle with or with out parents help? Thnks for all your guys helping

It really depends on where you live, how much you drive, how old you are, and your driving record. I'm 22 (no traffic tickets so far) and I register my car in upstate NY (middle of nowhere) and I pay about $1,450 / year (fully insured w/ $500 deductable) through Allstate for '01 RS Coupe. Before the Subaru, I had a '98 Civic (I was 20). I had to pay whopping $3,200 / year for the first one year through the same company. Allstate was the cheapest one that I found. My parents didn't own a car in the US, so insuring through my parents didn't help either especially when they lived in NYC. Oh yeah, that's something to think about. Insure it with your parents. Definitely makes things cheaper than paying it by yourself.

I sell insurance for a living and i try rating myself with an RS. Since your under 25 like me then you will probably pay around 1200 to 2200 a year. It all depends on tickets, and some companies look at financial reports. So call around and find some prices. But for the young driver, it is either better to be on your parents policy or go with Progressive. They have good rates for young drives. Good luck. I pay 1800 a year on a 97 outback sport and a mazda MX-3 (g/f's). that isn't bad, i have great credit though....

It all depends, I guess. I'm 23 and I live near Pittsburgh. I have Nationwide and I pay $98 a month, but I have an L not an RS. It just went down this year a little, it was $118. I don't know the reason for the decrease...but make sure you tell them that it has AWD, air bags, ABS, etc. All of that definately helps.

I spoke to Progressive yesterday (due to some billing problems) and asked them about ABS, AWD, dual air bags, and a security system. It only takes about $100 off the policy for the entire year. If I had an RS sedan, I'd save $350/year. Even if it was red, like my coupe.
I did have an L before this, and its not a bad idea to get one of those instead, or get an RS, but ask about a discount for the 4 door thing. |

A lot of the bigger companies only classify a car to start with...then look at actual claims and such to determine the rates, then adjust for your particualar situation.
I have a 01 RS coupe and pay less than $1000 per year through state farm. I called around right before I bought it and everyone was quoting me $1300 to $1500 per year. It pays to check around for the best rate, but sticking with one company, as one agent told me, can help too, which is why I think I'm getting a good rate. Oh yea, 25, a few tickets, and 2 not my fault accidents. |
