Switching oil weight for high mileage engine?
Hey Guys,
This question has been bugging me for a while... I tried searching but surprisingly didn't find anything. I didn't see anything in unabomber's FAQ either... Basically the question is: is there a point where one should switch from the factory recommended oil weight (in this case 5w30) to another weight due to high mileage? I see mobil1 10w30 advertised for high mileage cars... I'm almost at 200,000 kms and have been using 5w30 forever... Is it just marketing (not sure why since the oil costs the same) or is there a legitimate technical reason to go to a different weight on high mileage engines? Thanks!

I don't think mileage should be a factor in choosing an oil. There are a lot of Rotella fanbois on this forum who think the stuff is holy water and will tell you that if you don't use it your engine will explode. Personally, I have just been using good non resource conserving oils in 10w30 flavor when they go on sale like QS Defy, Valvoline Maxlife Nextgen (can't beat free after rebate at AAP), and yes, Rotella. I'm 100% sure any 5w30 you've been using is doing its job though, or you wouldn't be at 200,000km.

if...IF it isnt consuming any oil---or just a lil between changes...an old engine that has only had 5w30 in it may be best off staying with a 5w30 but using one of the good HM ones....

Is Rotella T-6 the best choice for NA applications too? I've heard a lot of really good things about it for WRXs, but I've not heard it specifically recommended for the NA EJ25s. Are there any compelling reasons I should switch from Mobil1 High Milage 10W30?

do ya wanna go to a 10k mile oil change interval(NOT kidding)?? YES....switch to the t6 those are, really, the only reasons to switch...if ya gonna dump perfectly good oil every 3k miles....done even think of using the t6 you could likely even run the t6 to 15k miles if you change the fiter at 7k -8k miles and top it off, as necessary that would make it cost effective to use it |

Scotty, I'm curious what your opinion is on time vs mileage for change intervals? Right now I'm only putting 6-7k per year on the car, so I've just been changing it every 6 months. Feels wasteful every time. How often would you change out the Rotella (or Maxlife, or m1 TDT or any flavor of good oil) |

To KNOW Senior ninja, do a used oil analysis with your next oil change at 6 months. Will cost you $20 at www.blackstone-labs.com and in the comments block specifically ask this. They will then recommend what you do based on the oil sample, this way you'll KNOW that by using XXXX oil, you can change it at whatever miles/time.

the time interval at that mileage per year is more important |

Regarding all the leak comments, I did have an oil leak but had the PCV valve and seals replaced so everything is better now. Thanks again! |

And the 10W-30 meets ACEA A3 specs (like GC). I only mentioned the 5W-30 since the OP didn't realize that there was one. http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...leage_Oil.aspx -Dennis |
