Does Your WRX Have ABS Problems? Want to Sell It?
It appears, according to this memo at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/prepos/...024-17580P.pdf, that the DOT is in the market for 2 or 3 WRXes.

It's good to see that the NHTSA is actually investigating this complaint. |

I pulled the fuses on my 02 Forester cause I hated the ABS on gravel. I already went in the ditch once cause of its stupidity...notice I said "its," not "my" Ah, that bit of amusement was just for me.
The ABS is ok on even surfaces. When things get slipperly or uneven, the braking gets very bad. Braking almost goes to zero. Sure you can turn, but you're not going to stop before you hit something 9 years without ABS and still counting, lol. |

My 04 WRX does this too. Even one small bump causes the ABS to go off.
When it happens, I have to get off the brake completely and stomp on it again to stop in time. What could cause this? |

Me too in an 03 WRX wagon. Scary over a pothole during a turn in snow. Thought it was just a glitch but now I notice all the time.

When I first experienced the "bump" ABS on my '02 I was slowing down for a toll booth. Never expereinced this with my Taurus SHO which had ABS. In fact the ABS on the Taurus was so good that if I was oversteering/sliding in the snow I could use the ABS system to straighten the car out. For some reason the WRX ABS is not that good. I think the system is a Bosch unit which makes me even more confused since on other cars the Bosch system is considered the best in the world. Maybe it just needs some firmware upgrade if the problem is software.

actually my 04 does the same thing. Even with the smallest bumps if you are on the break the ABS kicks in. I think I can do just fine without the stupid thing but I am not pulling the fuse. I will wait to see if there is a recall

There's a dip right before a freeway exit here and I nearly hit the curb the first time this happened. then I read something about it and I slow down prior to the dip in the road.

if you pull the fuse on the ABS does that also cause your EBD to go dead too ?

The brakes on my car are very scary sometimes. I have almost no braking power in snow, dirt, gravel, or uneven/rough surfaces. Since I upgraded to 17" wheels the problem has reduced quite a bit. Although I have only driven once in the snow on the 17's for about 5 miles(very slowly).
My car does not stop in the snow. If I touch my brakes while doing anything more than 10mph my car immediatly goes into a slide, the brake pedal will jump up and down and I have absolutly no control over the car until I hit the gas again. I am usually better off engine braking the car to almost a complete stop and then using the brake very lightly. This was on the stock wheels/tires though. The car stops very good when surfaces permit, but I don't trust my brakes at all. Maybe these guys should check out the transmissions while they're at it? |

I have had this happen in my car TWO times.
This was the result following the first instance: The second time I knew how to react (after talking with many WRX owning friends), let off the brake and reapplied. Crisis averted..BARELY. The ABS system seems to have some overly agressive yaw sensing because both times this has occured were when the car was in a turn or beginning one, though the braking force would not have caused the car to spin. |

I changed the rims and tires and haven't had a re-occurence of my ABS problem. It actually seems to work like it should.
I know someone else will call BS but it works for me... |

I can replicate the problem with ease on a specific brick-inlaid crosswalk near an office park where I used to work - stock wheels/tires on a stock '02 wagon.
The beahvior of the ABS on these cars is peculiar, to say the least. There were a whole lotta threads back in the day about this topic. I couldn't dredge up one mongo thread in particular that I remember (subject was something like "dirty draws" - referring to experiencing the problem), but the alt.autos.subaru newsgroup has jillions of posts on it also: http://tinyurl.com/2o7cc This'll be interesting to watch, for sure. I wouldn't be suprised if some sort of class action suit is the result a couple-three years down the line. Steve |

For the record, I used to always pull my ABS fuse in fresh snow, but not on packed snow/ice. Now that I've been rolling on Nokian NRW's, I have found it unnecessary to pull the fuse at all. Where's that "blame the RE92's" pic, anyway? |
