Is it okay to mount 235/40/17 tire on a 17/7.5 wheel??
Is it a bad idea to go beyond 225/45/17 for the stock 04 STi bbs wheel? I have a buddy who ran 23540/17s on the stockers and swore by it, but from everywhere I look it appears that tirerack, etc. warn against this set up... I would think that they'd be a bit loose???

loose?? I think you mean tight! I have a buddy who squeezed 245/45/17 onto those rims, so you should be fine.

Depends on the manufacturer's specifications for minimum rim width. This will vary by tire type.
I'm not an expert, but I see it as a long term wear / safety issue. If you go under the specified rim width for a particular tire, then you are changing the flex point in the sidewall to a location that might be outside the manufacturer's intended flex area. This may negatively affect tire wear, and even the ability to maintain the bead. I ran 235/40/17 on a 17x7.0 rim for 9 months. The manufacturer's minimum width on that tire was 8.0 inches. I was fine in the sense that I never lost a bead or had a blowout. But the problem is, everything will be fine until you actually have a problem. The last thing I want to take a chance on is loosing a tire bead on an off-ramp curve at 50 or 60 mph. So... I'm still running my winter tires, and am going to say good-bye to my expensive 235 / 40 / 17s. Could I continue to run them without a problem? Maybe, but I just don't want to take the chance, being a full 1" outside of spec. |

I have the 7" wheels as well (Superleggera 7"x17"), would it be risky to use 225 / 40 / 17 tires on them?

235/40/17 on 17x7.5 is done alot...you won't have any issues.
mista - Did you mean 225/45 or 225/40? A 225/45 is just fine on a 7" rim. I couldn't find any 40 series to see what they specify for rim width. You can fit a tire on a narrower rim than recommended. Usually you will give up feel, lateral grip, and wear. Whether or not you give up enough to make the tire perform worse than a properly sized tire would depends on the tire and your driving style. |

any chance someone could post a pic of some 235/45/17 on a 17"x7.5" rim? i'm curious exactly how much the overhang is. i'd liek to go with something a little wider then my 225's to help avoid curb rash and such on the rims. would 1/2" over the rim cause any major wear problems on the tire?

Every tire has a different width - for instance, a 225 Falken Azeni may be wider than some 235's, so how much "overhang" you have will depend on which tire you buy.

What tire?
Different tires run different widths, even in the same size. For example, in 225/45/17, Potenza RE-070's are wider than Falken Azenis Sports which are wider than Hankook RS-2. fyi, 7.5" rim is in the recommended range for most 235/45/17 tires. |

I would say for the most part you can even fit a 245 on a 7.5 rim. Ive seen it done. Im sure you would be safe with a 235 in pretty much any tire you would want.

We fit 235/45/17 Hankook RS-2's on an Rota Torque 17x7.5 with absolutely no problem - zero overhang, looks great!. The Hankook's run a "true" 235, while the Falken's and Kumho's tend to run wider than advertised!!
