SF Bay area tires 225/45/17: Eagle F1 GS-D3 vs. Falken 451 vs Falken RT-615
Hi,
Sorry that there is a yet another "which tire" thread. But I live in mountain view, and i need a good summer tire with a relatively stiff sidewall (I have Azenis Sports on my 17" Rotas and still stock RE92's on the 16s that I have not taken off from the winter). I desperately need some summer and California winter tires (read rain). What would you recommend? I've narrowed it down to the Eagle F1s, the Falken 451s, and the RT-615s. discounttire is running their free shipping promotion so I can pick up the 451s for $94/ea shipped, and then just drop by the local tire shop to mount em all. Tire rack has the Eagles for $145/ea, and the rt-615 are in a couple of places for ~150. Can someone give me a recommendation? My driving habbits are mostly spirited driving (route 9 in saratoga ), with no track or Auto X (that I can think of... maybe 1 track day this summer). I would definately prefer a more confortable, quieter ride than the azenis sports and the re92s Thanks a lot in advance for your input! --Dima

Maybe I should throw the Pirelli PZero Nero M&S into the mix?
As I mentioned, I just need a summer tire with decent rain performance in case I decide to keep them for the Cali winter.... |

Scotty,
How would the 451s compare to F1s? What factors would make me chose one over the other? Thanks. --Dima |

price.....whichever one I could get cheaper.....and there have been reports that the 451 seems to do fairly well in cool(er) temperatures.....dunno about the F1's in cooler temps. I have been 'surprised' by tires that didn't do well when the temps dropped....THAT may be the biggest concern ya got, really----especially in cold AND wet/damp conditions and that is why the 615's may not be a good choice for you. ....drive out to dinner......sun goes down.......temp drops 20° and it rains a bit.....and the drive home may prove costly the first ramp you take 5mph too fast.... |

Hehe, I hear ya.
So I just compared the Pirellis and the Eagles on tire rack, and they are neck & neck in ratings, and the pirellis are 20 bux cheaper. Hmmmm...... I guess its a toss up between these 3 (Nero/F1/451)? The 451s are WAY cheaper than the others, so I might go for those. I have read that they are quite loud, so if it's true (if they are anywhere near as loud as the azenis or re92s) I guess I'll be looking at the F1's, at my upper range of $$$ Hmm... Help My rex is asking for new shoes! I heard it speak this morning... |

Well, I just called a local American tire, and got a decent deal i think.
$528 out the door (mounted, balanced, disposed, tax) for a set of (4) falken 451's They also throw in free lifetime repair and free lifetime rotation/balancing.. I guess its a good deal? I get them put on friday.. Yay, I hope I made a good decision.. Thanks for the help Scotty. |

I've had the Falken 451s on my previous set of rims and they were excellent in the dry & rain.
You should also check out the Hankook Ventus R-S2 which have a very similar tread to the Advan Neova http://www.hankooktireusa.com/press_view.asp?ID=46 Thanks, Preston Gruppe-S |
