You're missing the point. If it was a junkyard motor for $500, then no warranty is fine. However, if it's $4,000. That's a different story, because they are making a ton of profit on it. Also, no one is asking for a 36K miles 3 year warranty, just that the motor is in good shape with good compression and a more reasonable time line to deteremine that.

BTW - does anyone know if the cam sprockets have to be removed to replace the rear timing covers?
That's how mine looked, pretty clean to me.

And unfortunately yes, I think you do have to remove the cam sprockets. Mine was cracked there too, but not too bad, so I just used some aluminum, made a custom cover and jb welded it to the broken cover. Never had an issue. At the end of the year, I plan to send it to the shop to get the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, and basic maintanence done, along with replacing the rear timing cover.

If you paid market price of around 4K for a 207 without a warranty, then I'd say you were foolish.

Yes, they are used parts, but the price determines the risk. For a grand, I'd expect it to have issues. For 2K, that's a risk I might take without a warranty. For 4 grand - it damn well better be in running order.

I got mine from japanmotorimport.com and it looked as good as new when it got here. Nothing broken at all. They even had compression tests of the motor online.

They were awesome to deal with and I even got them to throw in a v8 cluster so the redline would match

Is the Version 9 JDM STI still plug and play into a 2002?
I know the V7's and V8's are.

Just want to make sure they v9's are as well. I know v10 have immobilizers that complicate it.
I want to avoid any possible problems.

They do not listen (or don't care) to what you are saying. I tried my hardest to explain to them what I'm looking for (and willing to wait for) and they just don't care.

I would happily pay an extra grand to get a "cherry picked" motor - but not one vendor is willing to do it. Unbelievable - I guess I'm in the wrong business.

The vendor I purchased my motor from is probably the largest vendor here on NASIOC - and so far it's been like pulling teeth to get my refund.

They said they would pay for return shipping, i asked for it in an email, so I had proof, then the email came and they didn't mention the return shipping cost. So I'm back on the phone tomorrow to try again.
At this point I cannot recommend this vendor - and if he screws me over, believe me, I'll do my best to make sure everyone on nasioc is aware of it.
I would hate for anyone to have to go through what this headache has been.

If anyone knows of a vendor that is willing to provide customer service, please let me know. I just want someone to understand what I'm looking for. Utterly frustrating that I'm trying to give someone $4000, for just a little bit of legwork, and they won't do it.

My engine looked decent. It had a valve cover that the JDMer who owned it before me had repaired with what looks like RTV or something. They clipped everything imaginable when they pulled it it looks like. I can't tell if all that fluid on the front left of the engine that runs down to oil filter is PS fluid from when the lines were cut or if it had a persistent leak. I'll find out in a about a week I guess.

I think you do have to pull those sprockets.

you most def have to take the sprokets off. some of the bolts got a **** ton of loctite and you will strip the allen head bolt easily. if this happens have someone weld a nut on it so you can put a impact on it or large breaker bar and a socket. atleast that way the socket wont strip if you hold it on good.

I am in the process of buying my late model v8 now. i got like 12 pics of the engine from all angles and the vendor asked all my questions. he runs a smaller firm here on nasioc and reviews look good and no bad remarks yet.

ppl also have to take into account that some of this might have happened during shipping the engine so in that case make sure your shipment is fully insured by the seller before its sent out. at the end of the day then you have that for backup.

at the end of the day its not so much a debate on how long the warranty should be or who is right/wrong. but rather how the condition of the engines YOU all received were in comparison to azscoobie's. we should all be on the same side of this story since its a risk we all have taken or going to take.

But its not like the importer is receiving any sort of warranty from the engine. The only thing they know is what kind if car its coming from and what the mileage is.... Which they don't even always know that.... They are also taking a risk because just like us they don't know exactly what they are going to be receiving in the shipment....

It's not like they fly over there see the car running then crush it and ship the front clip over to sell....

Odd, I was told by my vendor that they do fly to Japan and check the merchandise out first hand to ensure that it's top notch so as to avoid any negative rep on NASIOC.

Mine came looking like this (along with another pallet and a huge crate):

While it was dirty, there wasn't anything wrong with it other than the fact that I got an aftermarket intake and it was obvious there was a manual boost controller in what was quoted as a "completely unmodified engine".

25,000km and almost 2 years later... perfect compression and leakdown.

My warranty was 30 days or first start-up... whatever came first. Since it took my 9 months to finish the swap into my bugeye RS, warranty was up.

This is the same as anything else though. Buy from a reputable vendor, not necessarily the one with the lowest price, and ensure good communication so that if something goes wrong, they'll step up.

Hey guys I have a question. Theres a chance I have a rip in my turbo inlet near the turbo. when I replace it should i just get the 02-07 wrx/sti inlet. Or should I look for one specific for the twinscroll / 207 or are all inlets roughly the same going into the turbo.

also has anyone done it without taking of the intake manifold. Looks like it has a lot more room without the TGV's getting in the way on USDM cars.

thanks!

you can do it with the intake mani on no problem. i would get the ebay silicone one for like 80 bucks. mine lasted three years now and looked good still when i took it off after i crashed my car. they should all be the same size since its stock location and you can put a twin scroll on usdm cars.

The stock JDM inlet is different than the USDM.

I saw a test on an Australian Forum with the JDM Spec C (which also has one less fitting than the USDM), vs aftermarket and the shift of the graph to the right did not completely compensate for the losses at the lower end.
You're better off with the OEM and it is larger than USDM, at least for a Spec C.
I pulled my tube without taking the manifold off and broke it in the process, to replace it with the APS. I thought at one point that the APS was speciffically built for the TGV-less runners. Turns out it's as difficult to fit as "usual".
I would not do a silicone ebay tube on this engine.

For problems with the product from JDMracing motors, take it to the vendor review forum, for best results. They're a vendor here.

This should focus on the technical side of these engines.

As far as tuning if I'm using a JDM V7 body harness will a tactrix cable have any problems communicating with the ecu over the JDM plug?

Vlad - I will take to vendor forum, sorry about that, didn't want to derail an otherwise awesome thread!

I do have another question that was asked earlier in this thread but not answered....
If I buy a complete v8 swap, motor, tranny, axles and diff, will it bolt right up to my 2002 wrx? I know what I need for engine swap, but tranny?
I already have fhi 4/2 pot brakes if that makes difference.
If not, what parts do I need? I've done quite a bit of searching, as well as reading this entire thread but cannot find anything definitive.

I think the jdm tranny is very well matched to the ej207, even though highway mileage may suffer.

Trans will work no problem if you have the rear diff and axles. Your hubs are 5x100 already so you dont need to worry about that.

Wasn't an issue for me. My JDM V7 STI ecu is tuned using Rom-Raider and a tactrix.

Most of these motors are out of wrecked cars. This is why they are sold off. Many went flipping off cliffs, Smashing into road barriers and other cars ect. You never know if you are going to get a good motor until it is checked and started.

On the turbo inlet. Use a silicone turbo inlet for an STI. It will fit. Do not use the stock plastic hose. It always fails at the rubber to plastic interface.
d
The 2.0 engine uses a different oil pan. You do not need to upgrade the pan or the tube. However, If the engine is out for repair, I would consider the windage tray and pickup tube.

Clark, thanks for the input.
I believe you more than I believe the vendors, but they tell the customers that the engines were taken out of running cars....not wrecked ones.

I don't believe them and can accept that, I realize its a junker, and its a crap shoot at best

Zaider, are you sure in that transmission fitment? Not saying you don't know, I just need to be positive before I make the call.

Because I will most likely buy the tranny as well, if I can get a good deal on it.

It does come with rear diff, and four axles, linkage, shifter. It looks complete.
