Default better mpg on 100 octane?

besides the obvious
i've put 7 gallons of 100 octane + 7 gallons of 91 = got 240 miles on that tank. put all 91 in and got only 190 miles on that tank. Am I just crazy?

Not crazy. But if you think about it... it cost you just about the same.

100+91 = $50
91 full tank = $35-$40

Plus another 50 miles?

So it seems like it evens out.

lol similar to what happens to mine with 101 unleaded mix I use. 190-210 on 91 and 250-270 on 101/91 mix.

IF the car is able to use the extra octane (turbo and high compression motors), you can see some mileage improvement with higher octane gas... I'm quite surprised that you saw such an improvement. Are you sure your driving habits didn't change between those two tanks?

If I gave my car a 100 octane coctail it might well affect my driving habits but I would not expect it would be in the conservative better mileage direction

It is the car upping the timing while crusing. That is where they are getting the extra mileage. The gain does seem on the high side of what I would expect, but it is plausible I guess.
