Just wrapped my Grimmspeed PnP header and crosspipe with a 1"x50' roll of DEI Titanium. Installing it tomorrow along with the stock heatsheilds
Oh and PS, those steel ties are a bizotch to get tight. Use clamps instead.

those steel zipties are useless. i bought a box of worm gear hose clamps off ebay. they worked alot better. the dei titanium is nice and easy to work with. thats what i used on my tomei headers and uppipe.

Well, I got mine tight somehow. I might try to put worm clamps on, but I'm not too sure how the clearance under the stock heat sheilds would be. Should I even worry about the SS ties coming loose?

Mine have been on for right at 1 year and I was under the car last weekend and everything looks like it did the day I bolted the pipe in. And they were just pulled as tight as I could get them. I figured I'd go to clamps if anything loosened up, but so far so good.

Can normal worm clamps with stand so much heat? Or are there a special type that can with stand the head these pipes omit?

Plus, doesn't the wrap help to keep some of the heat off the clamps/ties?

Let me get this straight because I plan on wrapping my up pipe and down pipe in the very near future. As long as they are stainless steel, they are g2g?
Very good point! The whole point of the wrap is keep out heat. So I guess that answers my question. |

The zip ties are SS, so why wouldn't the clamps work? Under normal running conditions, you can touch the heat wrap and it's warm but not enough to burn.. though I'd think if you track it, that's when it'll really heat up and stress the ties/clamps.

FWIW I installed the header last night. I couldn't use the stock heatsheild, so the crosspipe was exposed in the engine bay between the engine and radiator. I reached down after doing a LOT of WOT driving and touched the wrap. Probably could've placed my family jewels on it safely, that's how well the wrap worked So glad I decided to wrap the GS exhaust mani.

I used the whole 50' roll on just my header/crosspipe because it was the only thing I had to wrap. Just letting you know now that the stock mani is a little tricky to wrap... if you plan on doing it, keep re-wrapping the collectors until you find a way that uses the least amount of wrap. I didn't care about having extra when I wrapped mine, so I went over spots that looked a little bare

Cool, thanks.
I'm gonna cut off my heat shield mounts and grind em down flat, so wrapping should be easier. Plan to PnP and wrap+foil tape, like Ken Ride5000 G. did, with replication of UP shields instead of tape there to really keep out any oil/grease. I have an extra complete pre-turbo exh. set, so can work at my leisure...will post pics to some thread or another for PnP exhaust items when done. Any special shears/scissors needed for the titanium wrap? Unabomber used kevlar shears, but I don't wanna drop half a roll of wrap's cost just to cut the damned stuff! others in this thread or related got away with new, decent scissors. You can use practically any scissors. It isn't that difficult to cut.

I used those orange scissors (see my pics) and they're more for cutting paper. They work, but you gotta cut kinda slow. Use something better if you want cleaner ends.

Just to prove Unibombers point about the 1" wrap. I did this two years ago with 2" wrap. Notice how terrible it looks. Also, I can definitively say that it has completely removed itself from the header. Gruppe-S UEL headers there
Works GREAT for downpipes though =) To conclude: Doing a complete rebuild of my suspension and will be re-wrapping soon with 1" I'l try and remember to post before and afters. |

I don't have a source for the 1", but I can get 2" wrap for about .50c a foot if anyone is interested.

I bought another roll to do the up pipe. I'll post pics of that later |

Just FYI, if you track the car you should wrap your down pipe to work with the air flow or else it's like stroking a cat the wrong way at 135mph.
