Default Peugeot 208 GTI

Peugeot 208 GTI revealed
The wraps come off Peugeot's 208 GTI hot hatch concept. The modern day 205 GTI we've all been waiting for?

Peugeot will preview its new 208 GTI hot hatchback with a Geneva motor show concept. But we can expect a production version by the end of the year with few changes, as it looks pleasingly showroom-ready.

While ‘reborn 205 GTI’ clichés are all too easily rolled out when a performance Peugeot is unveiled, they’re very hard to ignore this time around. Peugeot itself is heavily encouraging such behaviour; its press release happily namechecks the 1980s hot hatch icon, while the ‘GTI’ badge on the 208’s rear quarter panel is an unashamed nod to its ancestor. The 208 is also significantly lighter than its 207 predecessor, helping edge the hatch back to its roots.

And after the underwhelming 206 and 207 GTIs, the new 208 could be the return to form we’ve been waiting for. The front wheels are powered by the same 1.6-litre turbo engine as Peugeot’s top-spec RCZ coupe. Maximum outputs of 197bhp and 202lb ft should help hustle the wee 208 to 60mph in under seven seconds, keeping it competitive with its rivals – the Mini Cooper S, Vauxhall Corsa VXR and new Ford Fiesta ST and Renaultsport Clio – which will all boast similar 1.6 turbo fours by the time the GTI’s on sale.

There’s a six-speed manual gearbox – no mention of a paddleshift automatic just yet – while the brushed aluminium interior is said to be very driver focused, possessing Peugeot’s smallest steering wheel in years. Here’s hoping its rack has more feel than the RCZ’s. There’s also Nappa leather sports seats plus plenty of Alcantara and LED detailing, though some of this might not make it from concept to production.

Chassis-wise, the GTI’s track widths are up 36mm over the standard 208’s, while there are 302mm brake discs up front, 249mm rear. Exterior highlights include twin chrome exhaust pipes, red trimmed alloy wheels and a subtle bodykit with a rear roof spoiler.

Pricing and spec details will likely be saved for the production car’s reveal, but an £18,000 starting point will keep the 208 GTI competitive in class.

Also on Peugeot’s Geneva show stand will be the 208 XY (pictured, purple), which gets trick ‘pulsion’ paintwork whose appearance changes as you walk around it. The interior is also strikingly clad and gets an ambient lighting setup. It previews a Citroen DS3-like personalisation scheme that could help take Peugeot’s supermini more upmarket

I'm so sad that we don't get any of these fantastic European hatches here. We have a million and one ****ty SUV's and a paupers ration of cool hatches, and even less two door hatches.

America, bigger is better. I would love to have one of these. You would think they would sell like hotcakes in cities like L.A, NY, and Chicago.

What's in your garage? Plenty of automakers have attempted to sell 2 door hatches in the US. I can only assume that you've either pre-ordered a 500 Abarth or have a MCS tucked in there now since fun-to-drive 2 door hatches are what you're interested in.

I find that very funny....

I tried getting the local Honda dealer to make a decent deal on a Fit a while back and they were pretty set on MSRP. Content to stick it out till the "right Honda person" came along.

No joke...that was the phrase from the salesman's mouth.

If they would simply add a sunroof to the Fit I likely would pay MSRP.

The 208 GTI will probably use the same engine as the JCW MINIs.

It's looking good.
But, I'm more than a little biased as I grew up into an almost 100% Peugeot home :-).

Well, this is sexy. I'm pretty sure my eyes wouldn't be able to leave the dash though... so much going on.

You wait ages for a good little hot hatch, then three come along at once. Within weeks we've driven the Ford Fiesta ST, Renaultsport Clio and now this, the Peugeot 208GTI.

All three come to the party with stiffened suspensions, spoilers and skirts, extra jewellery, and proper sports seats. Well, if your hot hatch doesn't have that lot it might as well pack up and go home. Ditto with the little splashes of red around the interior: as any fool knows red seatbelts are worth a second a lap.

All three are shoved along by 1.6-litre turbo engines, with direct injection and turbos and variable valve timing. There's amazingly little to separate them, though the French cars' power (200bhp depending how you measure it), just eclipses the Ford's. All three come, too, with electric power steering, that notorious burglar of feedback and involvement.

The 208 doesn't bother with too much fancy electronickery beyond that. The transmission, like the Ford's, is a simple six-speed manual and none the worse for it, and there are no sport buttons or special programs for the engine or chassis.

Only one thing determines how aggressive the 208GTI feels: how hard you pedal it. Going gently, it's supple and refined. The steering is accurate but a bit short of feedback. It rides forgivingly and quietly, and there's plenty of mid-revs turbo surge to get you going. It feels eager without being manic. You can relax into the nicely finished, modern cabin.

It also feels compact. That's handy when you're in town - it's shorter than the old 207, but just as roomy. It also keeps the visual flab off. It's a nicely spare-looking machine. And out on a twisting road, the short overhangs and light weight bestow it an encouraging sense of agility.

But if you're going flat out, you want it to feel manic. Well, though the 208's red-line is painted at a stern 6200, I regularly took it to the 6700 cut-out because that's where max power arrives. Hey, not my car... And in the upper reaches, this is a keen and tautly-wound little engine, taking on a cheery howl as it goes. Sharper at the top end than the Ford? I'd say so.

The chassis, too, starts to come alive as you push it, resisting understeer, feeding back what the tyres are doing. You can hurl it at a corner and it's got an immense capacity for sorting itself out. I drove the Fiesta ST a few weeks earlier, and have a memory that the Ford was more willing to wriggle its tail entertainingly. But those roads were greasier, so I can't be sure. It might be small but the 208 is terrifically stable - under torque, under brakes, over bumps.

In fact, let's face it, these three little hatches are so close it's going to take a direct face-off to sort them out. We will very much enjoy refereeing that one...
