^Right that's just a concept, but I think it's going to be pretty close. The "official preview" of the new WRX is just 3 days away in manhattan so we don't have to wait long to find out.

I love the look, but this is also just a concept. We also dont know how the sti will look either. So far i really like it. Cant wait to see an actual show model!

I seriously doubt a production car would have some of the features portrayed in that video. Regardless, it looks like total **** (to me of course )

They are dropping impreza from the WRX/STI.

So it will no longer be "Subaru Impreza WRX Sti" It will be Subaru WRX/STI since it will be a different platform than the base impreza.

I like the look of it in profile, not such a fan of it from the front or rear, seems like they are trying too hard to create something stylized.

All I know is, if the new engine is DI only, I will be glad I ordered my '13 when I did. I work on these new DI engines, and I am not impressed. With blow by from turbos and no injection directly on the intake valves, we are seeing heavy carbon buildup on the intake valves right in the intake port. For this reason I was really impressed with the BRZ's Toyota derived injection system (SPI and DI). Sorry for the rant.

I was really looking forward to DI twin scroll 2.0 but if its tucked into that shell then I'm going to have to take a pass on it. If I wanted something like this then I'd go Audi shopping.
I guess they are really trying to distance themselves from their past and trying to market to more people then those that would normally buy a WRX/STI.

I think they did a good design.

Subaru uses tried and true Japanese styling methods. Copy a panel from one car, a hood from another car, a roofline from another car, a rear end from something else, a front end from another something else. Look at recent history. Mazda 6 is Altima redone. All the Luxobarges are BMW/Mercedes redone. Accord is a total abortion of random cars. This WRX is a lot of that. Jaguar XF grill with lots of BRZ influence. Even Quattroporte/Tesla Model S rear door treatment. Front side is some Evo, some GT-R. The high belly line is both Evo and (gulp) Chrysler pimpmobile 300ish. I think it fits well as a package.

The idea of separating Impreza (but keeping it as an economy model) and WRX (4 door only?) and STi (2 door only?) is a good strategy. Unlike the E36-E46 M3 move from 2door/4door.....where 4 door sales were 55% of US totals, the WRX/STi is largely sold to a younger crowd where pricing is very important. I could see the WRX being available in today's STi power range and the STi breaking with the 2.0L and going with a new 2.5 or even 2.8L at 350+hp. Maybe even an H6 turbo at higher levels but at a much higher price ($45kish starting).

This all would make sense to me. Don't know that it'll happen, but it would make sense.

Thoughts on whether the wrx would be mankind'sand released before the STi? On the NYIAS page, if you view the Subaru lineup, the STi shows the current model, but the wrx shows a hidden/covered car.

Then again, only the xv crosstrek hybrid is listed under the debuts...

I think the electric turbocharger possibility will be cooler than people think. I also read the rumor of the electric turbo. The new BMW M3 will have one and if there's one car that needs it is a WRX/STI.

It's called an electric turbocharger because there's still a turbine in the exhaust creating the energy for the compressor, It's technically a supercharger but the energy comes from the exhaust gasses and not the mechanical rotation of the engine.

It's the way of the future. Better than supercharging because you aren't wasting additional mechanical energy, better than turbocharging because instead of wasting exhaust energy to control boost up top and waiting for the exhaust energy to gain enough speed to drive the turbo to reach target boost, you capture all exhaust energy and simply apply the amount you need to use to achieve target boost. It conserves more exhaust energy and will literally make turbo lag non-existent. Simply apply the otherwise wasted additional exhaust energy at High RPM's to the compressor at low RPM's and in between cycles store it in a high-flow capacitor or Battery system...it could even be kinetic but those are far more complex.

It will be FAR easier to tune for too. Instead of having elaborate boost control systems to reach target sooner and keep the turbo on-target by bleeding gas around the turbine you just will be able to say how much boost you want. The only limitations are the electric storage capacity and the flow characteristics of the compressor. Depending on how much juice the stock turbine system creates, we might find ourselves only upgrading compressors, batteries and drive motors in future aftermarket upgrades.

Twin scroll is cool but just imagine having all 275 ft-lbs of torque from as low as 1200-1800 rpm on. A 300 hp STI will feel like an NA powerhouse and no one will complain. It won't end aftermarket turbo upgrades either. Frankly it will make them potentially as cheap if not cheaper than current upgrades because you'll be able to upgrade the compressor side independently of the turbine side. Once aftermarket tech catches up you'll be able to get new generators, batteries and drive motors too. Probably more expensive for the electrical components but you'll need them less than before to make big power gains, at least on the torque scale.

However, all that aftermarket stuff will take a good 4-5 years to come to fruition IF the new model even catches on enough to create a market. Until then, I'm happy with my 18g-xt and a bit of lag to make far more peak power than a stock STI even if I only get that power from 3700-5500 rpm.
