At least you could fit a MASSIVE intercooler in there for that tiny turbo

If it is anything like the Sonata Turbo, performance won't live up to the HP numbers and the gas mileage won't live up to the EPA numbers.

But you get what you pay for. In this case, a performance sedan high on promise but low on fulfillment.

Toyota's interior is ugly as sin. The slight performance gain is certainly not worth having to stare for years at one of the ugliest, most mundane interior out there. Hyundai wins in that respect.

Where did I say anything about interiors? I said that the Sonata turbo doesn't perform where you'd expect given the "official" numbers. Motor Trend simply used the Camry Hybrid as a comparison in performance.

I just had a Sonata Turbo on loan to me for a road trip and perhaps the numbers on paper aren't impressive but it sure takes off when you put your foot down to pass or from a roll. It is more than fast enough

I also got 33.4mpg (EPA is 34mpg) highway and that was with it loaded up with the family and driving driving at 80mph with a few jaunts to 100. I am also notoriously a mileage killer with my driving so I was surprised

Edit to add: Car and Driver got 0-60 in 6.5 and 1/4 mile at 14.9 @ 97mph. That is not exactly slow for a big sedan that is not meant to be all that sporty

I still take Motor Trend's words with a grain of salt. Remember, Toyota pays them plenty of $$$ for advertising.

I can agree with this having driven the Kia Optima Turbo (essentially the same car). From a roll the Optima T is faster than I even remember my LGT 5MT being. I was extremely impressed.

Its worth the test drive

I like it. Not surprising on the mpg, since 2.4L Sonata is rated 35mpg on a highway.

Hate that "turbo" on the seats though.

Turbocharged seats! If you fart it's like nitrous.

saw this car on the road the other day, the styling definitely makes you do a double take ... however for a 3 car hatchback, I was a bit surprised as how large the car looks in person

V6 Camry was about $4k more expensive than 2.0T in that comparison test. TDI was about $8k more expensive than 2.0T.

We don't know how differently the cars were equipped. MT didn't say if they were equally equipped. Navigation, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring and such can swing the prices quite a bit. The Passat was a 3.6L V6 gasser. Again, I was just commenting on performance relative to the numbers.

That color is amazing!
I really hope that's a flat black.
Finally a company offers flat black!
It's about time!

I don't know who is saying its big, it's a smaller Accent.

It's small, but can fit real people in back. Just takes a bit of folding due to the roof to get in back there.

For many, there is only one problem with the Hyundai Veloster: it’s slow. Funky asymmetrical design aside, the interesting new Hyundai product left enthusiasts wanting and so to solve that issue the Korean automaker has unveiled a new turbocharged model today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
With a twin-scroll turbo mated to a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder output is rated at 201 hp at 6000 rpm and a significant 195 lb-ft of torque at just 1750 rpm. That’s a serious jump over the standard car’s 138 hp and just 123 lb-ft of torque. With that power (and more standard equipment) comes several hundred pounds of extra weight, putting the Veloster Turbo at 2,800 lbs. More than a MINI Cooper S but less than a Civic Si, Hyundai can still boast a better power to weight ratio than either of those cars.
As for fuel economy, the use of direct injection helps deliver a projected 27/38 rating with the six-speed manual. No numbers for the dual-clutch six-speed automatic are yet available.
In the transmission department both a six-speed manual and six-speed dual-clutch automatic are available, with wider gears for the manual, so as to cope with the added power, while the auto-box gets closer gears to help keep it in the ideal power range.
In addition to power Hyundai has also tuned the car’s intake and exhaust notes and has firmed up the steering to improve driver feel. The car also looks noticeably sportier thanks to 18-inch wheels and it’s quite a lot meaner too, thanks to a large, monotone flat-fronted grille and a complete ground effects kit that ends out back with a large diffuser and two center-exit exhaust pipes. To help the car stand out further are Turbo-exclusive LED daytime running lights, as well as an optional Matte Gray paint – the first matte paint finish offered by Hyundai

Maybe I got the Wheelbase numbers wrong but I saw WRX as 103.1" and the Veloster at 104.3.

That might be right. The Veloster looks to have a pretty wide base. They look great in person. I'm extremely impressed with Hyundai and their new directions.

You got the wheelbase numbers right, but that doesn't tell the whole story

Overall length of Veloster is 167.3 in./ WRX hatch 173.8 / WRX Sedan 180.3
