Default Help me narrow this one down....

Ok the car is a 2004 sti. It already had a problem with the 5th gear grind and the dealer fixed it. Been fine for a while. I'm now getting a gear/whine noise when....
1. Drive down the road any gear any throttle position as long as you are on the gas.
2. Doesn't change with rpm, just speed based.
3. Let off gas when in gear and it stops.
4. Put car in neutral at say 40+mph coast along...noise with or without clutch pushed in, put back in gear and give no gas, noise goes away, touch gas and it comes back like it was on a switch.
5. Normal gear noise through the first gear or two (had this since I bought the car) but you can really tell this noise at 40mph. It continues untill the roadnoise and worn out tire noise take sover at about 70mph.

Took to dealer they know about it, but not sure what it is (they did say it sounds like a differential noise). Gave the ok to drive the car and report back if anything makes it worse or if I notice things that make it more noticable.
The only thing that I noticed that does seam to make it worse is highway driving for say 30min+. I've been trying to avoid this tho given the condition of my tires. Not a wheel bearing, not tire noise, not throwout bearing noise (I thought it might be this untill it started doing it with clutch in or out in neutral), sounds like it is coming from firewall area, center of car.

I know these cars have a little more complex awd setup than say a 4x4 truck but any idea what inside the diff could be causing the noise? Bearing? gear adjustments? It just kind of sucks cuz i know something isn't right but I don't want to drive it till it falls apart to get it fixed. 28,000 miles on the car. Tranny was pulled at around 17000 or 18000 (Ithink). Ideas?....

Seams like every 12000 miles something goes wrong in this trans. I checked my record and the first symptoms of the 5th gear were at 12xxx miles. About 12000-14000 more miles and now this problem.

How can I make the diff blow out of it without abuse?

Seriously tho, all I want is the thing fixed.

Drove it tonight. 40 miles later the noise gets louder and now when you are off the gas like if you were to be slowing down without the brake I get a clunk, clunk, clunk, clunk...kind of like a monkey inside the transission with a hammer trying to get out. So now I have a whine when on the gas and a clunk clunk clunk when i let off. What a great car.

Time to contact dealer again and see what they want me to do.

I'd start by replacing the rear diff fluid. Check the plug for excessive shavings or other signs of wear.

It's coming from the front. I just e-mailed the dealer. Looks like it's going to be Happy Birthday (june 25th) here is your rental car. Ehh maybe they will just give me a new car ha ha

Wow a month later and the car still isn't fixed. Took to the dealer twice, second time had to drive with the area "rep". The whine that it make he concidered normal but if it gets worse to let them know. Honestly in the 29K miles I put on the car I never heard this noise so how is it normal? On to the second noise...which it didn't make when driving with the rep...
I get this noise when off the gas, slowing the car down when in gear, it takes a little load to get it to do this. Example...driving down highway 65ish, slow down to 40ish, let clutch out in different gear and clunk...clunk..clunk....clunk. Sound is similar to changing the DCCD from front most setting the the rear most setting but it make this noise when in auto mode.

Ok so i took it on a little drive last night, whatever is wrong with it, it does not like heat and long drives on the highway make it worse. Once i finally got home, came inside for about 10 mins, got a drink and figured lets see what it does now. Went to leave garage, put car in reverse, let clutch out, no gas and wow...CLUNK...Kind of like a rwd car with a bad u-joint but this is coming from what sounds like the clutch/frt diff area. Everytime I let the clutch out it did this. Ok maybe once I get moving It won't do it...wrong, 1st-4 gears it did this clunk every time I let the clutch out after a shift and the whine is noticable louder than if the car was cold. So went for a short drive, clunked when shifting the first 4 gears (high load, low speed) and the whine gets real bad at 45mph. Also, at this point if you slow down and downshift, once you downshift as soon as you let the clutch out you get this clunk. I'm going to try to get some of this on video from inside the car, maybe today.

Situation so far, 12k miles tranny out for 5th gear grind, warrentied (repaired) and trans was fine, no noises, at this time got fluid changed of course. 28kish miles noticed this whine, been to dealer twice, first time dealer said we hear it but would have no idea what to look for if we take it apart, come back and we will let you go for a ride with the rep to see what he thinks....during this time between trips devoloped this clunk.....ok back to dealer, Drove with rep and service manager. Car did the whine no problem, wouldn't do the clunk tho. In the end, rep said noise is normal, i'd have no problem driving the car to CA and back. Asked about if I should try changing the fluid, No need to it only has like 12k miles on it. Ok so now what? Drive it till the noise gets worse and let us know. Made it home and next day it starts it's clunking again, lol.

Any ideas as to what this could be? what i could try to see if it makes it worse? At this point i'm stuck with this car having this issue till it A. gets worse or B. it breaks.

Bump once again. Has anyone experienced this? I have talked with a few techs at dealerships saying that they had a couple sti's that would lock the front diff for no reason at all and it would make wierd noises when you wouldn't expect it.

Anyone around central PA want to go for a ride?

I'm near Williamsport if you want a second opinion, we can take a ride in my car to see if you hear any similar noises. Oh, if your near Williamsport I hope your not dealing with Kinley's they are a horrible dealerlship. I can hook you up with one that gives a crap about thier customers.

Let me know,

Fess

Williamsport is about 2hrs from me. Not sure how that would work out for you.

Dealing with one dealer on this noise, and they are not close to me. The one thats 2 miles from my house doesn't know crap and they lost me a long time ago. It was the same dealer that had the trans apart the first time so I figured there would be no problem in getting it fixed. If I could figure out how to put vids on the pc I would post up a vid of me driving down the road and it making this noise. Maybe I will work on that this weekend. The excuse of "oh thats a normal noise" I don't buy because in 27,000 miles of driving the car I never head this noise or the clunk.

I've riden in two other sti's since I noticed this noise, neither of these have made this noise...one even had 65,000 miles on it! I'll see if i can get some vid or sound clips up. Till then anyone with any ideas let me know. Thanks.
