Default 21500 miles on an Axis / RAW Performance motor

Did you ever wonder what the inside of a Axis / RAW Performance built motor looks like after 21500 miles?

At 21500 miles the motor was still running strong.. making same power as it did at 5K miles when I started to add BOOST to it.

The only issue I had with this motor was piston slap from the drivers side. It became noticeable at 5K miles.

I continued to drive the car with the piston slap and put 16500 additional miles on it.

I decided to pull the motor and drive it down to Ron's shop in Columbia IL for a refresh. The car is for sale... for the right price (see my classified add if interested). My plan was to evaluate the motor condition after 21500 miles and if everything looked good... upgrade the performance a bit more with ported heads and aftermarket rods.

Ron, Shawn (Ron's assistant) and I were very happy with what we found inside the motor... very minimal wear and no surprises.

The video below captures the key points of our evaluation.

About my project:

2005 STi, AXIS / RAW Performance motor (see spec below), FP Red, KS Tech 83mm CAI, DW 850 injectors, Tuned with ROMRaider & StreetTUNER by myself (with help from a few very good friends).

The car was achieving 29.72 miles per gallon highway driving.

I ran a best of 11.44 @ 123.60 in the 1/4 mile

My build specs:

About Axis / RAW Performance:

The video probably speaks for itself... but I will add that I am very impressed with the quality of work Ron produces. In addition to top quality the customer service is unbelievable. I really appreciate Ron and Shawn's willingness to allow my son and I to capture the experience on film.

If you are looking for a solid build, I recommend Ron and his team. If you are interested, visit his webpage: http://raw1performance.com/

ok..im not one to question rons ability to build engines, but keeping those cam caps in order is pretty important, not one minute into the video they just discard them into a box.

i dunno about all that.

All the caps are numbered from the factory.

they are not only numbered position wise but also with the matching 3 digit # on the back of the head so they are matched to the appropriate head.

How much clearance was there between cylinder #4 and the associated piston?

Let me confirm with Ron, I believe: Passengers side (no noise) were around 0.003, noise maker was 0.0035

i believe that they use CP pistons they ask for a lot of clearance and they always slap i had a car in that sounds just like that with CP pistons it souned like it had a rod knock it is normal for cp's

Just checked with Ron, the noisy on was .0037 all rest were .0032~.0034.

He is going to set the refresh a little tighter, .0027~.0028

Of course it is, the bore clearance is measured at the largest point on the piston, which is near the base of the skirt. The crown is much smaller as it expands more due to being much hotter.

A 99.5mm piston crown will expance to 99.86mm when going from 20degC to 180degC, so obviously it needs to be MUCH smaller than the base of the piston.

The top ring land will also be oval too, and some piston companies use grooves to allow a tighter clearance, if the pistons scuff the grooves allow the high spots to deform or wear without seizing in the bore.

They're marked as to what positionand direction they go on the head so putting them backin the right spot is all about knowing what direction is fron and what cylinder is what.

I have a motor from them also, but mine actually has like 30k miles almost. it has the cp pistons and mine are noisy as hell! theyve gotten a lil louder, but theyve really stayed about the same for awhile. they do sound like a rod knock, alotta people have asked me about it.

Yea... the sound is horrible.. and embarrassing .... till you get into the throttle and all worries go away.

I carpool with a guy to and from work... he is a performance nut ... but... the first time he heard the piston slap, he asked that I give him warning before mashing it ... so he could put his safety glasses on

And.. finally, here is what it sounded like running the 11.44 pass (the slap started to happen well before this pass was made)
