Default Summary: USDM STi TMIC installation

Update 6/28/06: go to page 4 for pictures of JDM air splitter kit.

Here is a write up on how to install USDM STI TMIC on your WRX.

Thanks to GDR, Big Sky WRX and Supermarkus for good information & tip.

1. USDM STi TMIC is not a simple bolt on mod like JDM TMIC. V7 JDM STi TMIC is noticeably bigger than USDM TMIC. Price difference is around $150-200 between the two.

2. When you buy a USDM STi TMIC, check to see if it comes with a Y-pipe as it can be costly to purchase one separately.

3. You will notice that Y-pipe to turbo hose is about 1" short in order for TMIC to have perfect fitment!

Solution:
Order 2" 90 degrees ID hose. You will have to cut about 1 cm to create a perfect fit.

or

Cut your Silicone y-hose (if you have one) by installing 1 7/8" OD coupler after cutting the hose as shown here:

4. Mounting bracket won't align on passenger's side of STi TMIC. This is perfectly normal for USDM TMIC to not correctly align with bracket. Reason for this fitment issue is because OEM throttle body hose is about 1" short.

Solution: order 2.75" ID turbo hose (3" in length). 2.5" ID hose won't work!

5. WRX splitter and seal won't align correctly!
Solution: order air splitter and seal kit from rally spec
RST-9085kit Air Splitter & Seal Kit MY02-03 $84
http://www.rallispec.com/

6. Will chimney type heat shield work with STi TMIC? NO

7. My STi TMIC didn't come with a Y-pipe. Will my stock plastic WRX IC y-hose work?

No, only way it will work is if you have STI TMIC to sit tilted without both brackets tightened.

Feel free to add other useful tip & advice here!

I found out that passenger's side bracket will FIT if you use longer turbo to IC hose. If you are using a Samco y-hose from WRX, you can simply cut it and use 1 7/8" OD coupler from Advance auto part to extend the length (first posted at scoobymods.com).

Be sure to get either V7 or V8 USDM air splitter kit as stock WRX won't work effectively. According to Big Sky WRX, you will need V8 when both brackets are mounted correctly. You will need V7 when only driver's side bracket is sitting correctly.

UPDATE: On 02-03 WRX with JDM STi hood scoop, you must get a JDM V7 air splitter. USDM STi air splitter will not work.

Kenny, how's fitment of 2" ID 90 degree elbow? I heard that 2" may be a little loose.

On an 05 I did:
From http://www.subarugenuineparts.com/
STi Air Splitter 2004-2005 $69.95
STi Scoop Duct / Bellows 2004 $29.75
STi Hood Scoop - 2004-2005 Model Painted to Match $190.00
Plus $1.50 EACH for 17 of the little plastic clips for the bellows
and $2.50 for some 1/8" weather stripping(the stock splitter had some on it, and the new one didn't, so i just replicated it.

And from http://www.hosetechniques.com/catalo...Gloss%20Finish
50.275-300-110 $10.50 (2.75" ID, 3" long)
56.200-418-110 $38.25 (2" ID, leg are 4.18" from center of bend)
I also got the suggested T-bolt clamps.

Used 04 USDM STi TMIC with Cast Y.

Bolted in with no trouble. I put the bolts in finger tight and looked at the alignment of the TB and it was great. With it bolted up I used a set of $5 calipers to see what length I needed and cut the TB hose with a razor knife(if you've never cut silicon before, it helps to wet the blade, spit works great). The 90° hose was a little more tricky. I put it on the IC, realized the top leg was too long because with it touching the turbo the IC was too far back, I couldn't think of a way to make an accurate measurement so I took the IC back off and made a carboard cutout of the hose. I put the IC back in and slid the carboard in and marked off what looked right. I cut leaving a little extra and tried to put it in, both sides still too long, so I cut exactly what I had marked on the cardboard and it went in. The only thing I'd note is the Y pipe is a little lower than the outlet of a PE1820, so I had to pull up on the hose a little to get it lined up all the way..

I did have to bend the AC lines just a smidge, when I goosed the gas the IC was getting a little too close for my liking, it didn't touch, but I didn't like it.

All in all it took me about an hour and a half.

I also have to give a BIG thumbs up to the folks at Hose Techniques. They were so nice and friendly. I blabbed with the owner for about 10 minutes because the ordering lady was talking to a race event coordinator. The hoses were absolutely top notch, no burrs, just as smooth as can be. The T-Bolt clamps were great too(they make their own), the only thing I'd note with them is the TB side of the TB hose is a little narrow, and the clamp looked a little wide, I hope it holds, the other 3 fit great. I had the hoses and T-bolts on order for over a week from Mach V and got the never ending "we expect them in a few days" I called hose techniques which is in So-Cal and manufactured in So-Cal, they had my box in the mail an hour later and I got them first thing the next morning.

what you can do, if you get the longer IC to TB hose, you will probably have to trim it, you can just take the trimming to wrap the AC line, zip tie it down.

I found that just bending it back doesn't push it far enough into the firewall.

it isn't pretty, but it works.

This is old info but thanks for the repost, being on this forum so long as you have almost been all these get lost in the archives!!

Anyway to prevent any of this at all cost when buying an STi (v8) tmic always try and get the stock y-pipe with it. Also it always good to get all stock nuts, bolts, etc.. when buying a product.

Luckily I was fortunate enough to make a trade deal when I bought my STi tmic. The guy who sold me his fortunately went with the bigger tmic and not fmic and needed my samco hoses so we sort of traded and I only paid 50 bucks for mine.

hehe....

I know, I didn't know mine didn't come with y-pipe until I brought it home. Mine came with stock WRX pipe.

I thought I wanted to share my learnings since I have been seeing a lot of USDM TMIC threads lately here.

One last thing. If you decide to extend the hose to make passenger's side bracket align correctly, IC to TB hose will be about 1" short. You will have to order a longer hose for a perfect fitment. That's all I have to wrt USDM TMIC project.

Unabomber, thanks!

One last thing to add.... intercooler to TB hose is about 67mm ID (2" in length), which is about 2.63 inches ID (thanks Big Sky WRX for taking the measurement). You can order a 2.75" ID turbo hose (3" in length) from here if you decide to correctly mount both brackets.

Yes.. you will need both longer turbo to IC and IC to TB hoses.

1illusion, I have ordered 2.5" ID 3" long TB hose vs. your 2.75" ID hose. TB ID was about 2.63", so I thought it may be better if I order something smaller. Seems like either one works good.

Yeah, the stock hose ID is 2.5(just went outside and measured), so 2.5 would work fine. When I measured the TB and IC OD I thought about it for a whle, but ended up going with the 2.75 for ease of installation and it has worked for a while now.

You'd be shocked how easy it is to bend, I watched very carefully when I did it making sure I saw no kinks or flatening, it just straightened out the bend that was towards the top on the passengers side. As far as hose, anything will do, some fuel line, or any kind of hose you can split and put over it. I'd just grab some calipers and look at the OD on the line, then pick up the same ID hose(or slightly smaller) and split the hose down the middle, slip it on, and add a zip tie or two. After bending there was enough clearance on both sides I didn't feel the need for a cover though.

I swear the brackets on the WRX and STI are identical. Are you saying they don't line up, or you bend them for more clearance? I can understand bending to give more room for the air conditioner line, but the only difference is the STI mounts to the outer hole on the passenger side bracket. There is a lot of play in the driver's side bracket with its two loose bolt holes. A good 1" left to right. If you have any trouble lining them up, don't tighten the driver's side bracket to the intake manifold. The passenger side bracket pretty much goes where it goes, almost no play, though. Tighten it down first.

A local and I test fitted and set the bracket side by side. Identical brackets, no problem getting the STI TMIC into the WRX with the WRX brackets. The guy I sold my TMIC to also confirmed the brackets I sent him (my facotry STI brackets, included just in case) are the same as his WRX brackets.

If there is a difference, I'd really like to see a side-by-side shot.

Brackets on WRX and STi are identical. You don't need to bend any brackets...

Err, then why did you say...
"4. Brackets will not align with the intercooler on passenger's side. It is perfectly normal for USDM TMIC to not correctly align with brackets. Either fabricate your own or leave it as is. "

I'm probably missing something, but...

Reason why it won't align is because turbo to IC hose is about 1" short. If you read this thread carefully, there is a solution for that, which is to extend the hose by about 1" using 1 7/8" coupler. Once you extend the hose, you can now mount the IC on both brackets correctly.

For those who choose not to extend the hose can opt to either fabricate a new bracket or leave IC unmounted on passenger's side.
