DOHC EJ25 Diesel sound... how to convince to get fixed...
so i got my car about 3 weeks ago. i have the inderstanding that if the engine makes the diesel-type sound while cold, thats ok, just so long as it quits when it warms up.
more often than not, it doesn't quit. i have till the 8th (yes, thursday) of my 30-day bumper to bumper warrenty. now i dealt with carmax on another task about the car once, and they were pretty cool about it. i wanna know as much tech info as i can get on the causes, the fix and anything else yall can give in reguards to me getting them to fix whatever is wrong with the dang car. are the lifters adjustable or anything...? every once in a great while it'll not make the sound... all day no noise, but all to often i have 3 gas and one diesel cylender if ya know what i mean. any help would be great! thanks in advance yall... i'm thinking valve lash...
i would assume that adjusting it would be a real PITA, and thereby hard to con them into doing? |

I just had my shortblock looked at for a similar problem. They replaced it under warranty. Check out my post yesterday.
I don't think you have the same engine as mine, but don't give up! Have every mechanic in the dealership listen to it when it is cold. As in my case, it might just take the right guy to listen to it! |

Look into your states lemon laws, you got a car with a near blown engine, bad rod bearing or headgasket.
More then likely the headgaskets, since it's a phase II DOHC 2.5 Liter |

outside of the light diesel sound, it runs great.
it seems so random to have the sound... some days it doesn't ever do it, some days it doesn't stop... i don't get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 64,000mi, its of course the DOHC... the extended warrenty is 1500 bucks. for 3 years of essentially bumper to bumper. what are yalls thoughts in that??? |

I think piston slap would be always when cold but, a timing belt tensioner can be on and off if just weak but, not failed. Easy to check by a machanic when the engine is cold. Just remove one cam cover I think.

its a spakin new timing belt by carmax too.

I dunno if this will fly with carmax, but SOA just started to sell remanufactured shortblocks with longer piston sleeves to help with that problem. It also comes with a new waterpump, oilpan, oil filter, and thermostat, and costs about $1800.
I know because i just got mine back today with the reman shortblock. Runs better now then when I first got it, and no more diesel sound(but its been warm so I dont know if it helped). |

Generally things that sound like a sewing machine are valvetrain issues and things that sound like big industrial equipment are issues in the shortblock.

Your problem sounds exactly like what I was saying when I had a bad timing belt tension adjuster. This is not necessarily replaced when the timing belt is replaced (as it was not when I had mine done). Have you had a shop listen to it? You might just bring it by the place that would do the work in case something is wrong with it, and see what they think. I had to suggest a worn out TBTA before the shop guy said that it was probably a worn out TBTA. I replaced it, no more diesel. Abnormal noises are never okay.

tis a DOHC, and i'm pretty sure its had headgaskets done.

i'm bringing it back tuesday morning, and they are going to have the local subaru place look at it. (the local place is a bunch of dicks i think, and i think i'm SOL, but i'm still very pleased with carmax.

Blown headgaskets don't make any ticking noise........just so you don't look like a moron when you describe the problem to a service writer. The fact that you have DOHC heads does not automatically mean you have blown headgaskets.
Have them look at the tensioner. Did Carmax change it when they did the t'belt? Did they check the oil pump or the water pump? Jay Storm |

they changed the timing belt with the water pump- its interference, i know that. and i know about the headgaskets, i know they won't cause ticking etc i got that under control. as far as i know now, the DOHC is just fine as long as you have it shimmed right (vavles) and a good new HG in it, it should all be gravy from there right?

A guy I work with has a 99 OBS and mentioned it sounding like a diesel a week or so ago, had the alternator replaced, says it runs fine now. Not sure if the engine is similar to yours, but may be worth a shot to check it out. He has around 60K miles on his.
