What are coops thinking? Ram the car at 110? Why not back-off, radio ahead and put out stop sticks or some other less lethal option?

2-state SUV chase ends in death of local pair

Associated Press

Last update: 19 August 2004

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A high-speed chase covering 66 miles turned deadly when Georgia state troopers used a ramming technique to spin the fleeing vehicle off the highway, killing the driver and her teenager passenger.

Authorities said Katie Sharp, 21, of Holly Hill, Fla., refused to pull over when sheriff's deputies in South Carolina tried to stop her for speeding on Interstate 95. Authorities chased Sharp into coastal Georgia at speeds reaching 110 mph.

The fatal crash occurred Tuesday on I-95 near Savannah when pursuing Trooper 1st Class W.S. Fisher tried to stop Sharp's Nissan Pathfinder with a tactical ramming maneuver, bumping his patrol car into the fleeing vehicle behind its rear tire.

The Pathfinder spun from the road and struck a tree. Sharp and her passenger, identified as 17-year-old Garrett Gabe of Pennsylvania, died instantly. Authorities said neither wore seatbelts.

"The trooper executed his training. He acted properly," said Trooper 1st Class Larry Schnall, a State Patrol spokesman. "It was a long, dangerous chase and we felt we needed to stop it before some innocent bystander got killed."

Sharp had a suspended driver's license, Schnall said Wednesday, but authorities still aren't sure why she was so determined to escape police.

Sharp's father said he didn't know of his daughter being in any other kind of trouble that would cause her to flee.

"I think the reason she didn't want to stop was simply that she didn't have her license and didn't want to go to jail," Charlie Sharp said from his home in Holly Hill, a suburb of Daytona Beach.

Charlie Sharp, a former police officer, said he doesn't blame authorities for his daughter's death.

"It's a hard thing to swallow, being my own daughter and loving her as much as I did," he said. "I have to believe they did everything they did in the right way."

Sharp's father said she and Gabe, a friend who had been living in the Daytona area, were driving home after visiting Gabe's sister in Philadelphia.

Deputies in Colleton County, S.C., about 50 miles north of Savannah, clocked Sharp speeding at 86 mph in a 70 mph zone. Capt. Kent Tisdale of the county Sheriff's Department said Sharp began accelerating as soon as she passed the deputies in the median.

Motorists had to veer out of the way as the chase reached speeds of 110 mph and averaged "about 100 mph the whole way," Tisdale said.

"As soon as she saw them, she just stomped on it. That's a good indicator that something's wrong," he said. "When we got into Georgia, she was swerving back and forth across all three lanes, very dangerous."

The Georgia State Patrol, which took up the chase after Sharp crossed the state line, is investigating the crash.

The State Patrol's policy on pursuits says the ramming maneuver used on Sharp's vehicle "should only be used at reasonable speeds and in locations where it is reasonable to expect that the maneuver can be safely accomplished."

Schnall said he did not know how fast Sharp was driving when the crash occurred. Fisher, the trooper involved in the crash, has not been placed on leave, he said.

this is exactly why police chases are so worthless...86 in a 70 and two people are dead because some hee-haw desperado had to END THE PURSUIT. they just invented this thing called a camera and a bit later this even more crazy thing called a radio---either one could have been 1000x better to use than the stupid pit manuever

Nice training they have, "So we shall use the PIT maneuver at over 100mph on vehicles that are unable to take a corner without rolling over at 25mph" but hey, maybe she had a trunk full of coke.

It was just dumb luck they hit a tree, and what the **** were they thinking not wearing seatbelts doing 110??? I personally have no pity for the driver, perhaps for the passenger though.

100+ mph, swerving through 3 lanes of traffic, running cause she didn't want a ticket...

better her than me. i wouldn't fault the police at all.

not all police cars/departments carry stop sticks or have anything other than the PIT to work with.

I imagine there are also missing details such as approaching a high traffic or more residential area where it could have been 20 dead instead of 2.

cops are cool when they're protecting people, not killing them.

the cops get all pumped and they get the stop them at all costs mentality...like trying to be super heros...ever watch the show cops...they do use force when the yank someone out of a car after a car chase...usually 2 or 3 cops are on the person with the perps arm behind their back and a knee on the perps neck and another knee in the guys back...i know its prolly to protect them as well as the person being arrested...but they get so jacked and they are just human too

I guess someone missed the memo...or they were just too stupid to read it.
There is no reason for people to die. Had the cops just said "Woah! This gal's going too fast. Maybe we should back off instead of egging her on" things would have been much different.

It's not like they didn't have her plate or anything

Finally! I expected to see some lame parental comment like "THEY KILLED MY DAUGHTER! I want vengance!"

This is very refreshing.

In fact, I remember having a conversation with a Gwinnett County Cop who was telling me about, maybe it's not for GSP though.

Exactly why she SHOULDN'T have been chased. She was not weaving through three lanes at 110, etc. until the police started chasing her. They should have backed off and radioed(and they DO have radios)ahead.

By starting/continuing a chase at 100+ they were the ones who excaberating the danger. Let's face it, 86 in a 70 is not a dangerous situation. A 17 year old innocent passenger is dead because GSP "did it's job".

i still don't think a 21 year chick is going to run from the cops because she was driving without a license. there's got to be more to the story

yea, once you get the plate whats teh big deal ? Call the chase off and show up at the house, maybe takes a lil investigating but isn't that what police do ? God forbid someone doing 16mph's over the speed limit gets away whoooooooooaaa

Btw I probably would have tried to take off.... i know this "guy" who was speeding, saw the cop pull out and he tried to duck and run all over, and also on a bike too, but there is a point whne you should realize to give up.

that makes no sense. if someone is doing 16 over and you go to pull them over and they take off, that gives the police probable cause. 9 times out of 10 i bet a car that does that is stolen, or full of drugs, or something of the sort.

..or it could have been a young foolish woman that didn't want to have to call her ex-policeman father from a GA. jail.

and how are the five-oh supposed to distinguish between that and a psycho? the possibilities are endless. as we all know we can't expect our policemen to be perfect, but no one woulda said anything if she was carrying a crystal meth lab in the trunk and the police took her out.

I bet that during the chase they could have been able to run the plate to see if it was stolen.

There are better ways to take care of this than to make them spin/flip at high speed.

I mean, eventually she will need to stop.

1.)it prolly wasnt stolen
2.)her dad was a cop so i doubt she's into the drug traffic scene
3.)people get desperate and young drivers are more prone to try to speed to the next off ramp to avoid the 1st ticket

she didnt deserve to die even if her car was stolen and full of heroine

I guess going in front of her and making her stop slowly is not part of the training. Or the cops car have a speed limiter at 115mph

edit:
out of topic but i want to know opinions
my question is, would people still say "she didnt deserve it" even if the car was stolen and full of drugs?

how about the same but she is a he?
