With stock studs the generally accepted limit is 3mm.

Why do you want to use spacers, anyway? I would think an 18x8" +45mm would already fill the wheels out completely.

i've heard of dudes running 10mm spacers with stock studs no problem. i've always been told 10 is as far as you want to go on stock studs.

On a Subaru?

Word on the street is 3mm is max, although I've done 5mm and that's as far as I'd go. 10mm is a ton, no way I'd do that.

with 10mm spacers you only have a quarter inch or a little less than a quarter inch of bolt to stud. soooo yeeah.. if you really feel thats safe more power to you. 8mm are a little better but i wouldn't call it safe. 8mm might be too much anyways. id go 5mm and you should safe. just make sure you check the torque after a 100miles or after a really long non stop drive

Hey Ruel. I use 5mm spacers daily on my rims. From what I remember...5mm is pushing the limit but like vtecTHIS I've seen some guys do a 10mm. There's a rule of thumb somewhere as to how many turns the lugnut should go on just to be safe.

I've seen people using 20mm spacers, but they were'n on the stock studs. Don't go higher than 5mm on the stock studs or you may end up like that red RX-7 on youtube.

If my memory is correct, you want the lugs to get 3 full turns, at a MINIMUM.

The last thing I want to think about when taking a hard turn is if my wheel is going to stay attached to the car, make sure you've got long enough studs! 25mm is a full inch, I can't imagine you lug nuts are holding on to a whole lot.

I was thinking the same thing. I hope you don't weigh much, have any passengers ever or carry anything in your car, like a pack of gum or a CD 'cause the weight is going to cause major rubbing action on any sort of turn or bump.

3?! Yikes! That's not even remotely enough. Based on which engineering guidelines you look at, the recommendations of minimum thread engagement range for a fastener loaded in tension are generally in the 3/4 of the thread size to 1-1/2 the thread size. So for a 12mm wheel stud you're looking at 9mm - 18mm of thread engagement. (I don't think even the stock bits would give 18mm, so that's probably a bit high for our application.) So, at the low end of the range, 9mm divided by the 1.25 thread pitch gives 7.2 turns. There's not a chance in hell I'd trust 3 turns on my lugnuts!!

I think your idea of a "hard turn" is different than mine. And I think you need an alignment.

Thanks for the correction. McGard has a similar recommendation: "minimum thread engagement must be equal to the thread diameter of the wheel stud."

http://www.mcgard.com/custserv/tech_support.asp

So, that would equate to 9.6 turns. I thought 3 sounded pretty small, hence my caps on the MINIMUM part.

He just purchased H&R coilovers from me (450lb front, 400lb rear) yesterday, so I'm sure you're correct about the alignment.

With those spring rates, he should encounter rubbing much later than he would on typical lowering springs.

Pulling into a parking space does not count as a "hard turn". If you think you're never going to rub with the tires STICKING out of the wheel well, you are delusional.
