I am glad I found this thread because I have been wanting to swap my turbo out for a vf43 since the vf39 has the WG crack (tho people say it doesn't affect it, i just dont liike the idea of cracks)... I wasn't even aware that the vf48 would bolt right up. I read around a bit and one source said you would need very slight modifications for the vf48. If I were to swap out to the vf48, what additional parts should I consider on MY06? And what numbers would I expect to see on 93 octane assuming this is a conservative tune for a daily driver like myself.

^TBE (access-port stage 2), Bigger TMIC or a FMIC, and Walbro 255 pump minimum.
a tuner will recomend bigger fuel injectors (750cc DW) and maybe even one step colder spark plugs.

u should expect ~300whp (+/- 20)

i'm getting my car tuned on July 30th...
Current mods: 06 WRX w/~20k miles
-Cobb AP v1
-Invidia V4 catted DP w/ SPT cat-back
-Cobb lightened pulley
-SPT air intake

Not installed yet:
-CSS TMIC
-VF48
-Crawford OAS
-Walbro 255

but i cant deside if larger injectors and new plugs are really going to be worth it

Good luck, but I don't think a VF48 on pump gas and no meth will crack anything over about 300whp. Only on P&L's high reading dyno will anyone see 320whp and hold to 300whp @ 7K. Look over on IWSTI and you'll see that even with the STI's variable intake and exhaust setup (which the WRX's only have single AVCS) they are not getting 320whp on pump gas...

Not being a hater, but for the money a E316G or 68hta would be a better option. I was actually swapping out my td04 for a vf48 (with a FMIC)
but when I got into doing the work it hit me that for all of hard work I was doing on the swap that I'd be better off getting a bigger turbo since putting a smaller vf48 into my car takes the same amount of work putting in a bigger turbo. Just my $0.02!

scramm, just so you know, dual avcs only came with the 08 and up sti. not all sti's. 04-07 sti's and 06+ wrx's have the same avcs setup.

I was really only commenting on the 2008+ STI's on the IWSTI Proven Power forum since the VF48 is only on 08+ STI's... With the 08+ STI's dual variable timing on intake and exhaust I've not seen a dyno over there crack 305whp on only pump gas.

Again, not trying to be a hater... I myself bought into the hype of the VF48 and bought one and its still in my garage. I've done a complete 180 on this turbo... I have not seen any dyno's of VF48 cars from anyone else other than P&L on this site. And those P&L dyno's are damned close to plots of TD05 20G cars from other tuner shops with similar setups/mods/dyno eqpmt.

I just don't think it serves our website comunity any good to hype up this turbo, which is a fine turbo, to being more than what it is. Hell, look at the P&L dyo plots on the 48's and it looks like 68HTA plots... holding something like 225wtq and 300whp to 7K... No way that is possible on the 48... not with what it flows. Thats why people are jumping onto the 68HTA bandwagon: to hold that kind of power to redline+. Go over to the Perrin site where they install a FMIC on an 08 STI and even with the extra cooling, the car does not hold power like is shown in all of the P&L plots. Where there's smoke there's fire and those P&L plots are giving out a lot of smoke. The only before and after plots I've seen from P&L have the stock unmodded power/torque #'s a lot higher than any other stock dynos. That tells me their dyno reads high when every other dyno comes back lower on stock cars.

My VF48 is finally going in 7/25, along with a Walbro 255.

It's getting tuned on EFI Logics' heartbreaker Mustang, though, so numbers won't be too impressive. I'll post up the results.

shatteringstar, we have very similar setups, the results should be interesting.

I have:
SPT intake
Turbo XS TMIC
Titek catted DP
HKS catback

I'm sticking with stock injectors and plugs. I'm going for a safe tune, don't want to grenade third gear just be able to pull hard through redline. I'm so tired of the TD04 running out of breath.

The answer is no. The 48 is really just a more refined 39, not worth it at all for an STI owner, but a good turbo for us TD04 guys.

More food for thought.

The plot you are referring to is of my car, and this is a re-tune with just injectors and TGV deletes. 93 and 93/114 mix.

To put these numbers in perspective my car went 12.2 @ 113 (on the 93/114 mix) at the Midwest Subaru Shootout, is 342whp and a 113 trap really that inflated? As a point of comparison another 2.5L WRX with a Tomei M7760 which was making 360whp (on a Mustang dyno) was trapping around 110 the same day.

I'm not saying the VF48 is a magical turbo, but maybe with the right combination of parts it can hold power decently...

right combination of parts or not, that tune blew your motor up.

sure with race fuel you can push the hp up, reducing pumping losses running leaner, and run at MBT, futher increasing efficiency.

but running race fuel does not make the turbo flow more air. the compressor is only so large, you can throw it right off of its efficiency island, and sure, it might push more air, but then what? its very hot, and...... it blows your motor.

to post that dyno, and pass it along as normal for this turbo, when it is strung out to the maxxxx is what makes forums like this worthless.

Here's my plot with an E85 tune. Mods are:

VF48
turboxs tmic
walbro pump
850 DW
Cobb TB
Perrin Fuel Rails
Cobb intake

I've since had a roadtune with a perrin inlet @22psi but not sure where the numbers are at. It definitely pulls harder.

It does pull hard but I don't like the torque steer I'm getting. It comes on so suddenly that it seems the front wheels are breaking loose.

No. When accelerating in a straight line I can feel the steering wheel pulling side to side : torque steer.

torque steer in a awd car tells you one of two things .
one, car has some decent power

two, front diff is on its way out .

or a combination of both

if not the diff then could it be alignment or worn tires?

^^ Is really good on a mustang.

Begrudgingly I am joining the VF48 crowd, for a little while at least. I just bolted on my VF48 onto my 08 as I was going to blow a blood vessel in my brain with the issues I was having trying to bolt on my 20G and mate it with either the GMS intlet and the Perrin inlet... Neither worked and the VF48 slid right into place like it was made for my car. Oh wait, it was... only the STI incarnation, however. GMS inlet fits fantasticly for this sized turbo (20G a different story!!). I painted my stocker inlet in aluminized paint and set down several layers of clear on it today... Damn thing looks like it's made out of metal!! Its going to take a while for everything to cure properly.

My other power mods are:

TXS Intake
TXS FMIC
TXS Up-pipe
TXS BPV
GMS Inlet
GrimmSpeed 3 port BCS
Invidia DP
Borla Catback
Deaustchwerks 850cc's
Walbro (RIP to one of my tiny ass weak studs!)
AP w/PDX Mail Order 93 piss water map

Need to still to mount the actual intercooler and my build is done. I'm going to tackle the inlet issues with the 20G later.... I'm going to build my own custom inlet.

Intercooler will be mounted either Tuesday or Wednesday when I can get some more free time to finish this project and the after some data logging and fine tuning with Jarad, I'm taking it to SpeedIndustry(.biz) to see what it lays down on their heartbreaking mustang dyno.

Until I see first hand my own results, I still will not buy into that P&L's dyno isn't one damned high reading dyno! The results they are posting are just about damned close to what other guys are getting out of the 68HTA. The VF48 should be no more different than the VF39s and VF43s...
