Default Clutch slipping. Got a few questions.

Ya i know it needs to be replaced.
Clutch is starting to slip at high rpm, so no more fun driving until it gets fixed.
what i want to know is:
1) *approx* how much time left do i have before it goes kaput
2) where have you gone to put a new clutch in your WRX? how much did they charge? would you go back again?

Thanks, and no, i really dont want to do this my self right now, atleast until i get the brat up and runnign again. If i can miriacle up a new motor for the brat i will think about changing it my self.

1) i drove on a slipping clutch for a solid month and it didn't seem to deteriorate in terms of low torque driving. it also didn't get any better, of course.

2) i just had World One put in a new ACT Street Disc, and all up it ran about $1100 with tax (clutch labor on WRX is $500+ no matter where you go!). i would most definitely go back again: the clutch feels great, and i'm very happy with their service.

Do you have any worries about how a aftermarket clutch may hurt the stock transmission? I have a stage 4 wrx.

Erik...WorldOne will take care of that for you and have a great deal of experience in this area. Call Vince or Garret and they would gladly talk to you about the aftermarket and OEM clutch difference.

Erik, I've been running the ACT Stage 2 Organic Disc on my car for a bit over 35k miles. Most of it was on the 8psi turbo kit. Now its on my 2.0 stage 4. No problems for the tranny at all. You should get a lightened flywheel while you're doing the clutch, definetely helps make the car feel fastar.

Thats who i had in mind from the start. As far as the history of my car, Garret and me go way back .

RS_NW:
I am not doubting you so dont get me wrong, but i have just heard "stories" on how stronger clutches will cause more "shock" to the stock transmission. I have no idea the truth behind this though. I dont want to fiddle with my tranny until i take it down to W1 and get better gears put in, i would rather not use my spare transmission any sooner than that.

I don't launch my car, hard 2-3 gear pulls are pretty much all the abuse it ever gets. But clearly the clutch did not hold up to my driving style very long. (i learned how to drive a stick on this car, so it got about eleventy billion miles worth of abuse in the first week) And then the bigger Turbo and HP demands.

But i have heard of guys with stock transmissions and stage 4 setups simply keeping a stock clutch in and replacing it every 6 months to a year to avoid transmission replacement.

I will see what Garret says, i think i talked about this with him in the past, but my tiny brain has a hard time remembering.

Thanks for the advice so far.

His WRX doesn't have a stock transmission. He's running a STI v6 5-speed gearset. Besides, the clutch isn't what hurts the transmission, it's the driver.

I dont think thats 100% true. i mean i can't drive and my transmission still works perfectly.

In all honesty though, why upgrade gears if that statement is true?
I should be able to sell my stock tranny and rig up a bicycle chain to make it go.

I upgraded the gears for the closer/shorter ratios.

sounds good, i dont want to sound like too much of a smart ass. but after all these years on this board i was under the idea that too strong of a clutch can hurt the transmission. and that WRX transmissions are not the strongest in the bunch to begin with. are you saying that both of these ideas are wrong?

"Normal" driving with an aggressive clutch won't hurts the transmission. On the other hand, aggressive driving with a stock clutch can result in broken parts. I've had both happen.

There are plenty of people blowing out transmissions with a stock car crying about the glass tranny. On the other side are the guys making loads of power on the stock tranny who just don't beat on the car all the time.

Erik, the people who break their trannies are typically driving a lot harder than you do - read: power shifting and launching as hard as they can - drag or street racing. In those situations, yeah, you're probably going to break things, but if you're not side-stepping the clutch and you're a smooth driver, it's fine.

Here's the thing, it's going to run you $1100 or so to do an aftermarket clutch (from shik) and if you put an OEM one in and have to do it 1-2x a year, you're looking at a grand or two a year in clutches plus labor. The RA gearset plus aftermarket clutch would pay for itself in under two years at that rate, plus if you do the gearset at the same time as the clutch you'll save on labor (I'd hope) since similar things have to be removed for both jobs.
