options for ecu management?
I have a 98 2.5rs dohc and its geting headgaskets replaced so I figured id turbocharge it while its in the shop, but my concern is what do I do about my stock ecu? Can it be reflashed by anyone who watches tech tv or this something that takes lots of hardware to adjust, does anyone know of cheap ecus or piggybacks for my car that are programable what are my options...
BTW: what damage could be caused from turbochargeing my rs without runing a programed ecu?

On a 98 you can run up to 6-8 psi and use an SAFC, with good results.
I run 11 psi of the stock ecu with an safc and j&s knockguard. EGTs get a little to high when im really on it so I have to keep the right foot in check. I also have a 2.2t shortblock. I wouldnt run much more than 8 on a stock 2.5 bottom end. HTH jay |

Super Air Flow Converter.
made by APEXi Next step up from that would be a Greddy Emanage, just a bit more money but has alot more features, but requires a lap top and real tuning.. as in dyno, or wideband tuning.. Jay |

a 2000 ecu will learn around the SAFC. You might want to look into a gready emanage, and j&s knockguard, if you dont want to go full standalone. Jay |

BUT, a better alternative is to use a Greddy E-manage, which for slightly more than an AFC, you can control timing and fuel (what the AFC does). Also, the E-manage has an advantage over the AFC since it adds fuel by directly modifying the injector duty cycle as oppose to modifying the MAF signal, which can have some slight negative side effects. Search around for info on the E-manage. good luck. jonathan |

Also know that it depends on your plans for the build. I was going to do a Greddy E but then was told it wouldn't pull enough fuel past 10 psi-ish. and i'm looking for 15-20's once turbo, and STi block is on. WHEN, yes i know, it sucks. But cheep. this game really isn't cheep. but look on the used private for sale classifieds.
Also, where can i get a J&S? everyone seems to have them, but no one knows where one can buy one. W T F Batman? Thanks for any help. -Eli |

Yeah... Eli's got it right. Once you start getting into the 10+psi range you're looking at needing a standalone ECU such as the Haltech, LINK, Tec units, etc.
Eli: J&S's can be purchased directly from J&S. They also pop up on ebay pretty often. Check their website and send them an e-mail. John from J&S posts here every now and then. You could try finding him and sending him a PM. j |

I would spend my money on a stand alone. I have a 1998 that has been turbo for two years. I have used the SAFC and a ITC. They will work alright but the stock computer doesn't have a fuel or ignition map past 0psi. So don't plan on running more than 8psi without any problems.
http://www.microtechefi.com/ You will need the LT-8 |

if you have a 2000 then i dont think you can swap to a 98 ecu because the 98s are MAF and DOHC, the only interchangable years i can imagine are the 00 and the 01 since the cars are the same.
