So I just bought my first Subaru...2013 Impreza Sport Limited 5dr. Only has 1100 miles on it right now. Do I really need snow tires for it in Massachusetts? I've had small front wheel drive cars for years and never used snow tires. Thanks for any advice!

I hate people so much. The time of my commute this morning was double compared to normal. For an inch of slush! Ridiculous!!!

I left Tewksbury @ like 6:15am and took back roads to Woburn. Snow covered roads the whole way. I didn't wanna go to work, I just wanted to keep driving around.

2 1/2 hours to get from Stoughton MA to Andover MA on 128 North.
Watched the car in front of me misjudge how quickly they could change lanes in an inch of slush, spin out, and hit the barrier at about 30 MPH, losing a wheel in the process. Heeding the logic that Subarus don't stop any better than any other car in the snow, my snow tires are a good investment. |

I was behind a BRZ in Lawrence this morning that could have used some snow tires. I really hope they are not a member here cause they are probably an idiot.

Normal commute time for me. Passed the moron going 15mph on Flanders Rd in Westboro (yes, 15) and then simply ran the left lane all the way up 495. Somewhat fun with the new Goodyear winters.

I have not put the snows on, and had an off course excursion this morning because the idiot at the front of the line decided 10 MPH was too fast, and hit the brakes when they got to he bottom of the hill. Had I been by myself, or traffic had been moving at, say, 15 MPH, I would have been fine.
Going around a long downhill decreasing radius right hand corner with banking, I was in 2nd gear, off the gas and off the brakes at about 1500 RPM, and saw the idiot at the front of the line hit the brakes. I hit mine, instant lockup. I let off the brakes, and tried to put the car in first gear. At this time, the car started to slide down the banking going off the road. When first gear engaged, I was going so slow that it stalled the engine, which locked up the rear tires, and the front grabbed on the snowbank and left me high centered. As this all occurred at about 5 MPH, there was no damage. Snow tires may have helped this situation a bit, but not nearly as much as if the idiot at the front of the line had been going a reasonable speed. |

lets call this what this is. even if he brake-checked you, it's still your fault if you hit him, run off the road or crash. no sympathy from me. someone is going that slow, you suck it up and wait until you can pass them SAFELY.... |

I don't think following distance was the issue there.

The following distance to the car ahead was roughly 50 feet, which at 10 MPH is more than enough distance. The issue wasn't that I couldn't stop in time, the issue was that I wasn't able to accelerate to get out of the skid without ending up being too close knowing that the car in front of me was going to have to slow down more. The car that shouldn't have been on the road, or should have pulled over to let the line of traffic that I was by in was 3 cars ahead of me, not the one immediately in front of me. The car immediately ahead never did anything wrong in the 3 miles that I was in this line going a max speed of 15 MPH that the idiot at the front created. Had all of this happened at a speed where my car wasn't sliding sideways down the banking, like, 15 MPH instead of 5 MPH, the slide never would have occurred in the first place.
The area this happened was particularly slick. The guy who pulled over to make sure I was OK couldn't stop on this hill and ended up having to walk about 200 feet back up the hill to check on me, because that's how far down the hill he eventually stopped. I have not put the snows on
Quote:
if you would have hit him, it was your fault, regardless. trust me, i know. i hit some black ice and rear ended a SUV. took my licks and moved on. thank god it didn't happen in MA... New York State wipes off violations and at-fault accidents after 18 months vs. WTF ever they do here (5 or 6 years??) anywho, you're fatal flaw was as pointed previously. you are driving around on summer tires, hence, you are "following too close" for the conditions of the road - i'm not sure how they write up the ticket for that in MA. his speed, distance from you is irrelevant if you can NOT control your car and hit him. you should get snows. i've been rear ended three times in 9 years since moving back... one of those times, i actually hit the car in front of me! i was never assessed points because the driver who hit me was found at fault. crazy m******* drivers. |
