Default Cordless Impact Wrench - $40 at Harbor Freight

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94855

I'm picking one of these up for changing my AutoX tires. For $40, how can you go wrong? I'm sure it's crap, but it's so cheap.

Probably not too bad if you get the extended warranty coverage for another $20. That way you get a free replacement when it shatters trying to remove the first wheel. I just might have to do that.

The orange one I bought years ago (like 7-8) is still going strong.

That one only has 140 FT LBS of torque. That may not be enough to break loose the lugs on the car.

I bought the 19.2V 220 ft-lb rated impact a couple years ago.

First, it only had 75 ft-lbs of torque...would barely take off lug nuts on my subaru, and wouldn't take them off the VW.

Then, halfway through a tire change the contacts melted and I ended up with a $79 paper weight.

I realized my money and time would be better spent on a nice one, so I picked up an IR one. It takes of axle nuts (190ft-lbs of torque) with only half a charge, and a single charge lasts an entire rally.

More than 140 ft-lbs is a lot of torque for a lug. Even so, for $40, I'll carry a lug wrench too.

I've had the orange one for a year or two and it's been flawless. As long as it's charged, it's enough to take lugs off when torqued to spec (80 ft. lbs.). Just be sure that you know what you're getting: torque in reverse is often less than the advertised torque in forward.

I keep thinking my crappy Goodyear branded one is going to crap out but it's out performed my highest expectations.

I say get it...it's cheap.

I have the Goodyear wrench and it works great. I know guys with the orange Harbor Freight wrench who have been using them for years.

I also have the Goodyear brand one and I've beat the crap out of it this past year. Not only changing wheels/tires but doing suspension work, dropping the tranny...etc... pretty much anywhere I can get it into! Works geat!

That actually looks like a decent deal, so long as it's the occasion use thing like you're talking about. I just killed off a Craftsman "Professional Series" 1/2" drive gun that I used constantly for pulling/installing lug nuts for about a year and a half.

That basically means that it isn't nearly as good as the SnapOn guns which last seemingly years on end, but I think the only thing that's wrong with mine is the actual trigger, nothing motor or mechanical related. I tore it down and it looked great.

So, all of that said I would say go for it, and give us a review after you use it!

I got the $20 (after rebate) orange 20.4v cordless from Schuck's during their x-mas special. It breaks loose my lug nuts, sometimes it's takes a second or two to break them lose, but they eventually came loose and it's still way faster than doing it with a breaker bar.

I torque all my lugnuts to 75ft/lbs when I'm done putting the wheels back on.

The goodyear one from Pep Boys is the best! I've done multiple wheel changes on a singe charge, it will remove axle nuts most of the time as well. The only thing I have had a problem getting it to break loose are the lower strut bolts, if they have been beat down with a big air gun.

i got the snap on 18v over a year ago and i use only that at work. i don't know what the specs are but i use it like 100 times a day for everything and its never let me down. charges quick too.. theres a site off snap ons site about it raping the IR cordless.. interesting video's lol at one point the IR starts smoking. ANYWAY- i got it with 2 batteries and charger for $300 and i think it was well worth it. sometimes i need to break out the real air gun, but the snap on cordless can break crossthreaded studs off no problem.. only larger trucks with 7/8's lugs give it trouble.

The Snap-On is great.

The IR Air Tools are good but there battery powered stuff is just ok.

You are never going to talk guys that are buying 40 dollar impacts into spending the money on Snap-On tools they just don't get it.

I've used the HF one (3/8" drive w/ adapter) for about 3 years of auto-x. 10-13 events a season. It doesn't have the power to break the lugs loose, but I use a breaker bar for that. It also won't over torque the lugs when putting the wheels back on.

I know the snap-on is good. But the only thing that I will use this for is changing tires (weekly) for AutoX. I can't bring myself to pay $300 for a good one. I'd be worried about losing it. I figure, $40 is worth it. So I don't need to worry about somebody walking off with it, dropping it, or it breaking on me. If it breaks or gets stolen, I don't care. It's only $40.

I'm sure a monogrammed fountain pen writes very nice, but a bic is all I need.

For changing tires at Auto-x these things are perfect....I had a buddy who worked at harbor freight and I bought one dirt cheap (sale+discount) and it has lasted me a couple years with no problems.

Over the x-mas break, Schucks/Kragen stores had a big sale on their 20.4V line of cordless tools. A person on the NW Autox list posted the details. Basically, you could pick up a 20.4V cordless Impact for $69, and receive a $49 mail-in rebate. Or, I also noticed a combination Cordless Impact AND cordless 4.5" angle grinder for $99 with a $79 mail in rebate. I chose the last option.

http://www.partsamerica.com/productd...artnumber=8321

I essentially got the two tools, with two batteries for $19.

They are WAY better than the Harbor Freight items I had over the past 4-5 years, which happened to die last month. Way more torque for getting off the big pesky nuts. Also, I was surprised how powerful the angle grinder was, and how convenient it was being cordless. As much grinding/cutting ability as my el cheapo 4" corded grinder.

Chris H.
edit: they still show the items on "sale" at $89 for the combo pack I bought, but no mention of the special x-mas 3-day rebate anymore.

I have the one in the first post. It's not bad, but make sure you charge it the night before your autox events, or it won't have enough juice to break your lug nuts free.
