I didn't want to bend the book so i never scanned it... I think that kit would be a really nice one if anyone ever wants to make a SG5 show car |

Just what I want...a pooper scooper for my Forester.
IMO it defeats the purpose - higher ground clearance for gravel/dirt/mud roads. I like to play tarmac hero as much as the next guy but I don't want something to tear off over the next rut or speed bump. I like the whole idea of a Forester turbo with just that subtle little hood scoop to distinguish it from the N/A model. Stealthy, because (paraphrasing Bart Simpson) "no one ever suspects the Forester." To each his own, and we all know what opinions are like. Ed |

Ugly ! Hmmmmhhhh.
It is so far gone into the ridiculous I think it's fresh.
I like that front bumper. and grille for the 2003 bodyshape. I really dislike the new Forester body design when it doesn't have big, wild kits on it. The eyemask look on the headlights is excessive, but that's what the kids want. Syms always goes a little further out there with the styling. I prefer the more radical body kits, and I'm not sorry about it. That's the part of the Japanese "Stylewagon" Stepwagon scene that I'm into. I think that the Liberal Kit might be the coolest now, though. |

I kind of like the body kit. I am not sure about the headlight covers, though... looks like something that should be on a Gundam or Valkyrie Fighter or something from an anime mecha feature.
Now, the hood scoop I HATE. Makes it look like a Dodge. |

I guess you guys dun like what the Japanese do with their forester then IMO it's a good kit for a show car, if one ever plans on entering a forester into a Hot Imports Night or something like it but personnaly, it's too much for a daily driver. I'd get the JDM AERO kit and sports grill for my forester if I ever have enough Money... |

Part by part
Every aero-kit manufacturer seems to have a flaw in one or more components.
So I'm planning on taking a part or two from all of them and making a real custom. It's just expensive to gather up all of the parts and wait to get them painted and installed. It's going to take all year !! Anybody actually have one of these body kits that we all criticize ? I hear they look real stupid unless you lower your car at least an inch. So once you install a body kit, it won't be seeing the "Forest" too much anymore, unable to have any offroad clearance ! (Except for the parking lot by the bathrooms ) Any Aussie or Brit Foresters have body kits that are offroadable too? |

There's virtually no British drivers that mod their foresters as subaru's UK Forester Market tends to be empty nesters in their 50's. I have seen one MY 02 forester with the subaru kit, but it looks crap due to being at the standard ride height.

Offroad in Forester
Well, in Southern Californias dry conditions, its more likely that real 4x4 trails (unimproved) will F.U. up. Of course I've taken mine on a few "graded" trails which are perfect fun for the forester.
The west coast 4x4 trails tend to have huge rocks and even boulders which just fell off the side of the mountain in your way ! Seriously ! The Mountain rocks are so fragile you can just reach out to a shear rock cliff and grab any chunk you like off of it. Kind of scary no matter what you are driving. Not much mud out here usually. Wet twisty mountain roads to get up into the snow are the real challenge. In LA you go from super dry at sea level and 70 ° F; up to 8000 ft. 20 ° F and wet with black ice in the shadows. A variety of conditions and the forester tackles them all. So, I feel better about the body kit & lowering idea. |

We had this discussion about a year ago here on this forum. Everyone has different expectations of their Foresters, and different definitions of "off-road." I for one don't take my Forester off-road, because the off-road conditions of South Florida require purpose-built off-road machines. The hunters use full tracked swamp buggies or just use air-boats because everything is swamp. 40" tires and huge lift kits are a minimum. I used to go out with a bunch of guys every weekend and hit the mud trails. I had an FJ40 Toyota Land Cruiser. It was always stuck. It "only" had a 4" lift and 33" tires. I always had to get pulled out. The most capable trail vehicles were Jeeps or FJ40s with either Chevy or Ford V8 conversions and usually 44" mud-bogger tires. Even they would get stuck. I have pictures of one particular FJ40 getting pulled out of the mud, his 44" front tire had been separated from the rim because the mud was so deep and thick the rim just spun inside the tire. This is serious mud here.
And, as said before, the Forester would not make a capable Rubicon trail runner, either. But then, how many SUVs do? |

ugly
I never understood the reasoning behind putting a body kit on an SUV. Take a tall, high clearance vehicle, and add crap to make it lower? All you end up with is a tall SUV with no ground clearance, so you don't really get the advantages of the SUV, and you dont' really get the handling of a sports car. A lose-lose situation. I can't imagine those kits really do anything besides look good, and this kit doesn't even do that. Anyway, the forester barely has enough ground clearance to do any serious off-roading, but it's still fun it you don't mind scratching up the bottom of the rocker panels or ripping off a mud guard or two.
anyway, slightly off topic, but somehow still related. I just bought this cool book "Backcountry Adventures in Southern California" which list all the off-road trails in the area. It's mostly meant as a beginner's book, so no rubicon or stuff like that, just dirt roads suitable for stock SUV's (I think the forester could handle most of them with no damage). I've taken my forester on a few of them, and it's a lot of fun to be runnign down dirt roads like Solberg and Makinen. just thought I'd share in case anybody wants to do a run one of these days. |

4STR offroading
I think in mid feb. I can escape to the LA hills and forests, i'll be in touch.
Does your book have any 29 palms or palm springs area trails listed ??? I've been to some cool box canyons out there at the DUNE rave way back in 1997 and I want to find it again. It is perfect for 4strs |

The book contains everywhere from the Mexico border up to the monterey/Salinas area and out to the Nevada border, so yeah, a lot of palm springs, 29 palms area, Anza Borrego, Joshua Tree, Death Valley, etc. The best part is many of these are public roads, meaning there are no gates or anything to restrict access, and they're relatively easy, so no rednecks in Chevy's and Fords tearing it up. hmmm.. Maybe i should start up another topic for this.
Took a look at the picture of the body kit again, yup, it's still ugly. alright, we're back on topic. Wait, off topic again. ForesterPerformance, what year was your FJ40? I'm looking at getting one for a project car, probably fixing it up similar to yours, with 33" tires and a minor lift. More for general purpose off-roading, not a mud-bogger or rockcrawler. Mine was a 1975. The thing was pretty nice. Rock solid. Awesome off-road vehicles. I drove mine every day. =oP Had no roof, just a bikini top, so when it rained (and it rains alot in So FL) I got wet. Seats were the hard plastic drag-race buckets. Very supportive. Very durable. Not comfortable at all. I got rid of it after a year.
Kind of wish I had it (or another one) now. Actually, I take that back. What I really want now is an Austrian Pinzgauer. |

Truck Tough... Car Easy...
Don't forget Foresters are "Crossover" vehicles. Basically, we are just driving around in tall, truck-styled Impreza Wagons. Kind of like the mid-80s Honda Civic Wagons (anybody remember those) that had that way taller roofline and almost looked like a mini-van. I know that is how I like to refer to mine... Sport Wagon. |

I believe the EPA classifies the Forester as a ...passenger car. Edmunds puts it in the... small wagon category.
Anyone else?? |
