Default just installed helix uppipe and downpipe

it took me all of sunday and well into early monday morning to do it. my hands are cut up, my back hurts, my shoulders are sore, and i went into work today on 3 hours of sleep, but im happy. the install time could have been cut by about 5 hours if the heatshield from hell (the one on the passenger side with the o2 sensor hole) had not given me such problems. after hours of trying to get a 7/8 wrench, pliers, and monkey wrench in there i called up my friend to bring over his dremel kit. it worked great, that is until the last metal bit broke with about a 1/4'' of heatshield left to cut. i then spent about two hours hacking at it with simple tools <-- not fun. when i finally got it off i kicked it a few times, said some harsh words about its mother, and threw it against the wall of my garage. from that point i got the stock uppipe out, new uppipe in, downpipe on, and everything reassembled in about 4 hours. ill post a picture of the heatshield from hell in its cut, battered and bruised glory tomorrow.

performance-wise it is great. boost comes on stronger and faster, and the topend is noticably improved. and this was running on my stage1 map. tomorrow ill load the stage2 map and do some minor tuning.

Sounds like you had a blast I just finished installing my egt probe... simple enough but like you I had to work w/ some simple tools trying to cut a hole in my heatshield for the probe... what a waste of time! If I had the right tools, I could've saved so much time.

Anyways, it's always a good feeling after completing a task that you've done yourself... such a relief and sense of pride. I plan on tackling the up/down pipe eventually. I hope all goes well, but knowing my install history, I doubt it will go smoothly. Congrats to you for doing it yourself.

I'm sure there was plenty of this -->

but it's worth it in the end cuz -->

Every install amazes me. Everyone has different sticking points. It took me about 14 hours for my up/dp install because I stripped the engine mount bolt

But I learned how to pull my turbo So I think I could install an 18g in no time now(when I get one)

since im a newb when it comes to installs, and will be attempting the up/dp install soon. what tools would have made the heatshield easier to remove.

Blue, with more dings!

Default number one

The first thing anyone working on exhaust or exhaust related parts is a can of PB Blaster. Soak all the bolts you can see or get too the night before your project begins, then hit em again right before you try to remove them.
For my uppipe install I took off the splash pan and heatshield that covers the turbo the day before my install. The only bolt that resisted was the motor mount.
The secret to removing those is to wedge a piece of wood or something in between your socket and the frame. the nut has a round base so your socket will not be stable which leads to rounding off the corners.
For a tool list print out the Perrin install instructions. An 02 socket is your friend!
Time=1 hour to cool, 4 hours to install. No leaks!

i had absolutely no problems with the motor mount bolt. but then again i had my handy breaker bar. it was one of the easiest to remove.

i would recommend a 3'' and 6'' extension. you will need to combine these for some bolts. i didnt need a flex head. also you will need 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm sockets. its helpful to have 1/4'' and 1/2'' 12mm and 14mm sockets. get a extra large socket wrench or a breaker bar because some bolts will be extremely difficult to remove with a standard size socket wrench. and like everyone says, WD40 or liquid wrench is a must!

if you have the proper tools you wont strip any bolts.

Swine: get your hands on a dremel with a metal slicing bit. the way that o2 sensor is positioned, it is nearly impossible to take off even with a o2 sensor socket.

Just did the dp and attempted the up today (stupid auto shop closes at 5).

that very same heatshield was a thorn in my side as well. also, the engine mount bolt didnt wanna budge, and it was determined that 45 minutes was not enough time to remove the turbo, the up and install the new up and everything else. so all that was accomplished was the downpipe, something that really couldve been done in 10 minutes, rather than the 4 cursed hours spent on my failure of an install.

its frustrating though, since im a loadmaster with the airforce, and in upgrade training, i cant take days off at the moment, and the stupid aforementioned auto shop isnt open on sundays.

oh well looks like the uppipe will be decorating the living room for the next month or so, at least until the accessport arrives, then im installing it hell or high water

the only way i see to remove that heatshield is to cut it. i spent hours trying to manuever tools in there to get the o2 sensor out, but when it came down to it i had to borrow a dremel from a friend.

in my search for uppipe install threads which i should be doing sometime soon i came upon this thread.

comment regardign the 02 sensor. i read the Perrin instructions and it mentions something about a port on the passenger side of the car which is covered by a plastic thing with 4 popits. you remove that and then the 02 sensor is right there facing you. you swiftly stick your 02 sensor socket upon it and remove the damn thing. did you guys try this and it didn't work for some reason?

i tried this. i read all the directions before doing this. that little hole in the wheel well is where i cut from. i did not have the angle to get any kind of wrench in there.

I got the o2 sensor out in about 5 minutes with a 22mm open end wrench. I had just enough room to turn it about a 1/8th turn with my right hand and my left hand was going though the port in the wheel well holding it in place because the wires kept making it want to turn back. After I had the heatsheild off I cut it so if I ever have to take if off again itll just lower right off.

This is the second up pipe install I've and on the first one I just cut the o2 sensor wires and lifted the heatshield over and off then resoildered the wires. I never had any problems with it, but then again I only had that car for 4 more months before totaling it. Oooops.

Oh heh, this last install I did i forgot to put the o2 back in and started it up. WHOA damn I got me a serious exhuast leak, son of a Bizzle these aftermarket gaskets suck. I raise the car up and as its heading up I see the o2 sensor dangling..... haha i laughed my ass off about that.

i heard that you could unbolt the the passenger side exhuast manifold, and a few other various peices from underneath the car, and the upipe will come right out?

some say yes and some say no...obviously this method sounds easier then through the top(removing intercooler and turbo), so im probably going to try this method.

couldn't find a good pic, but a reversible ratchet wrench works really well for getting those exhaust manifold heatshield bolts as the head is really thin and these fit in there no problem. Stanley makes a nice set.
