I would not accept the car till I saw compression and leak down figures, once you take it its your problem again. And once you do take it drive it right away, hard... you almost want to try to replicate any issues that could be somehow covered up; work that motor in every gear. Dollars to doughnuts they left the old oil seal on there... oil seal failing, get the hell out.

Yea it kinda sounds like bullcrap to me. Maybe there was gasket residue on the block surface and they didn't clean it off? Who knows, but that sounds fishy.

I don't think a compression test is going to show bearing wear/failure. If the motor suffered detonation or something, sure. Any remaining oil that Subaru would have removed would have metal particles due to accelerated bearing wear. Good luck man.

I would want a new motor, or at the very least a powertrain warranty increased to 100k

I've never heard of an insurance company covering this type of thing. They cover accidents, not breakdowns. Are you sure this is even an option?
yep...the insurance lady said it's got coverage for stuff like this...falls under misc damage.

No, but he did stay in a Holiday Inn Express.

OP, pick the car up, drive it. If there are compression and/or leakdown issues, you'll feel it in the engine. If so, then bring it back to the dealer to have things checked. Otherwise, keep your paperwork, and don't get your undies in a big knot.

Funny you say that, this guy i work with has an Si and hit a puddle and it gulped in a nice chunk of water..... 2 weeks later he has a new engine. I didn't know they cover that kind of thing but apparently they do!

i asked them what happens if the engine croaks at say 65k miles...guy simply said we would address it at that time???

i drove it home, and drove it hard...i kept smelling a burning smell...which probably is residue from the burning from yesterday...and the car no longer has that smooth rise of power like it use to...i can tell it's gotten rougher now...like more laborious if that makes sense. deep down inside, i wanna tell myself nothing is seriously wrong, but i know that isn't the case...you drive a car with no oil or very little oil...it then violently dies on you and makes a loud exploding like noise...something went very wrong. i just know my car will never be the same, and it's damaged goods. the whole oil filter seal failure is way to fishy as well...i asked them for the all paperwork their service mgr was supposedly submitting to SOA...when i got back to pick up the car...the service guy left...the service mgr left...and i rec'd a one page receipt...basically minimizing the status of what happened to my car. now i am really mad about this whole mess.

I would go back and trade it in. Especially since you said you only owe $6k. You have Subaru's guaranteed trade in program, which you can figure out on their website with vin and mileage.

Man, I've never seen so many redundant question marks and exclamation marks...

DB, I think it's time you sat down with the manager of that facility. If it were me (and I was remotely considering a new car), I would run by an attorney's office and shake hands (grab a card) on this issue. Then, I would politely share the card with the Manager while discussing options. Options such as wholesale price on a WRX. I would explain your involvement in the Subaru community and make sure he understands that you would love to represent their dealership in the proper light with a new WRX.

In the case that he doesn't see you driving a WRX at a wholesale price, I would certainly pursue a new motor and I would start with a second service opinion documented with compression/leakdown tests. This isn't inexpensive as a process, but it IS something I would pursue.

Any Lawyers on here have an angle on this?

Have you called Subaru and asked that they document the situation, get one of their techie types $.02, and to ask them to intercede with copies of the dealer docs., etc.? I've read on these very same boards how helpful they can be...

You're not going to get through to one of the "techie types" at SOA. You'll be talking to a customer service rep, who knows nothing about the inner workings of an engine.

SOA is not about to cut one of their dealers off at the knees over this issue. They will call the dealer, the dealer will tell them the issue has been rectified and the car is fine, and that will be the end of it.

Heres what i would do OP. Call SOA, make sure it is documented completely, exactly what happened down to the T, talk to them about getting the next oil change independently tested to test for bearing material, offer to send them some of the oil also. It would also be wise to take the car to a different dealership to get another opinion, let them know that the dealership that usually services your car will be the ones replacing the engine if it comes down to it so you know that it is not going to be a burden for them in the long run. Past that if it comes back that there is excessive bearing material then I believe you would then have the smoking gun and can ask SOA to foot the bill for a NEW engine.

Blackstone labs does testing and many users on nasioc have used them.

i asked them...if my engine dies after 60k miles...then what? he said we would have to address it at that time...he also said understand about wear and tear?? i mean maybe it was a defective filter...OR maybe like what one of the posters said...maybe they forgot to remove the previous seal and it caused this to happen..!@#$

i feel like demanding a new engine but something tells me they won't do it...if i go to my insurance company and file a claim...they would pursue a new engine, but ultimately...the "new" engine would only be a used/junked engine from some junkyard (ky law doesn't require vehicles with destroyed engines to have to replace them with new engines...insurance lady told me that)

i'm headed back up to pick up my car...i am going to ask that they run these compresssion and leak tests to ensure the vehicle is properly working. i'm gonna need to talk to the service mgr about that.

in the end, i'm already feeling like i need to get a new car b/c my baby is now "scarred" ...ughhh. and i had 6000 left on the bank note !@#$!!!!!

for you posters in the know...what exactly do i ask them in terms of these tests? a cylinder compression test and a leak test? help me out fellas...appreciate all the feedback.
I would get SOA involved just so they know whats going on in case something does go wrong. None of that we'll approach that bridge when you get there (this is another way to say sorry but your screwed). I'd also get a SOA non-Bachman tech to take a look at the car just to make sure what the dealer is saying is correct and that the motor is fine. I would also get a 100K extended warranty out of them. This of course is if you cant get a new engine out of them. These engines should last for 200K (other pieces might not like the turbo) but i imagine this could cut this life seriously short..They should also tear down the motor and do a full inspection.

That's what I'm saying. And while a tech. person won't be answering the phone, they have access to them. Also, once it is documented, it won't be a matter of SOA throwing the dealer under. It'll be a matter of doing what's right. Even if it means helping the OP get into a new car, or with an engine replacement once the warranty is up. Saying it was reported on Nasioc won't do diddly.
