Yea, I ran low on oil shortly after buying my car and the oil pressure light turned on when I went around corners. Added slightly more than a couple quarts ( ) and it runs fine to this day ~20,000 miles later. Was there damage done? I'm sure, but it hasn't manifested itself yet.

I would not accept the car till I saw compression and leak down figures, once you take it its your problem again. And once you do take it drive it right away, hard... you almost want to try to replicate any issues that could be somehow covered up; work that motor in every gear. Dollars to doughnuts they left the old oil seal on there... oil seal failing, get the hell out.

I don't think a compression test is going to show bearing wear/failure. If the motor suffered detonation or something, sure. Any remaining oil that Subaru would have removed would have metal particles due to accelerated bearing wear. Good luck man.

I would want a new motor, or at the very least a powertrain warranty increased to 100k

No, but he did stay in a Holiday Inn Express.
OP, pick the car up, drive it. If there are compression and/or leakdown issues, you'll feel it in the engine. If so, then bring it back to the dealer to have things checked. Otherwise, keep your paperwork, and don't get your undies in a big knot. |

uhhh
for 11k more miles...then poof...gone!
i asked them what happens if the engine croaks at say 65k miles...guy simply said we would address it at that time??? i drove it home, and drove it hard...i kept smelling a burning smell...which probably is residue from the burning from yesterday...and the car no longer has that smooth rise of power like it use to...i can tell it's gotten rougher now...like more laborious if that makes sense. deep down inside, i wanna tell myself nothing is seriously wrong, but i know that isn't the case...you drive a car with no oil or very little oil...it then violently dies on you and makes a loud exploding like noise...something went very wrong. i just know my car will never be the same, and it's damaged goods. the whole oil filter seal failure is way to fishy as well...i asked them for the all paperwork their service mgr was supposedly submitting to SOA...when i got back to pick up the car...the service guy left...the service mgr left...and i rec'd a one page receipt...basically minimizing the status of what happened to my car. now i am really mad about this whole mess. |

I would go back and trade it in. Especially since you said you only owe $6k. You have Subaru's guaranteed trade in program, which you can figure out on their website with vin and mileage.

Man, I've never seen so many redundant question marks and exclamation marks...
DB, I think it's time you sat down with the manager of that facility. If it were me (and I was remotely considering a new car), I would run by an attorney's office and shake hands (grab a card) on this issue. Then, I would politely share the card with the Manager while discussing options. Options such as wholesale price on a WRX. I would explain your involvement in the Subaru community and make sure he understands that you would love to represent their dealership in the proper light with a new WRX. In the case that he doesn't see you driving a WRX at a wholesale price, I would certainly pursue a new motor and I would start with a second service opinion documented with compression/leakdown tests. This isn't inexpensive as a process, but it IS something I would pursue. Any Lawyers on here have an angle on this? |

Have you called Subaru and asked that they document the situation, get one of their techie types $.02, and to ask them to intercede with copies of the dealer docs., etc.? I've read on these very same boards how helpful they can be...

SOA is not about to cut one of their dealers off at the knees over this issue. They will call the dealer, the dealer will tell them the issue has been rectified and the car is fine, and that will be the end of it. |

Heres what i would do OP. Call SOA, make sure it is documented completely, exactly what happened down to the T, talk to them about getting the next oil change independently tested to test for bearing material, offer to send them some of the oil also. It would also be wise to take the car to a different dealership to get another opinion, let them know that the dealership that usually services your car will be the ones replacing the engine if it comes down to it so you know that it is not going to be a burden for them in the long run. Past that if it comes back that there is excessive bearing material then I believe you would then have the smoking gun and can ask SOA to foot the bill for a NEW engine.
Blackstone labs does testing and many users on nasioc have used them. |
