Replaced front main seal and oil pump o-ring
What an enjoyable experience it was...seriously. I procrastinated for about 4 months on this job due to whats all involved, but after my car was p|ssing out a quart of oil every two days I felt it was time (not to mention the smoke screen from oil dripping on the exhaust.)
So I tore into it last night and took my time. The bolts were easy to access, there was adequete room to work, and most surprisingly... timing was a cinch considering there are four camshafts to synchronize. Subaru made this very easy with the belt markings. I did do my homework on this one, (thanks to everyone who ever posted on this topic,) also the lagacy manual was a tremendous help. No oil leaks to report and now the only issue is finding a way to remove oil from the underside.

I'ts nice to find out how easy suby's are to work on isn't it. Thats why I work on them professionally. Did you tighten and locktite the pump screws on the back of the pump? This is the primary cause of the leak in the first place. As the oil leaks past the vanes of the pump (when the screws back out) it forces the front seal out and begins leaking. Syncronizing the drivers side cams can be difficult since they are under spring pressure. There is a special tool used to lock the cams that makes the job easier. Obviously the cams must have stayed in place for you.

Actually one of those pump screws was loose...but I did lock tight all of them. The drivers side cams were stubborn until I locked them in place with two breaker bars zip tied to some hoses, I believe ATF cooling lines... It was the only thing I could think of at the time - An extra set of hands would have been nice.
Question for you, as a professional, how long does it take you to complete this job? |

It takes me approx 1hr., and I take my time to make sure it is right. The job pays 5.5hrs. unless it's under warranty. I am not sure of the warranty time though (I dont do many under warranty) it's probably around an hour.

damn! an hour is efficient. It took me ***cough*** 6 hours. I bet I could cut that time in half on the second time around but an hour is tough.
