Planning on moving to South Bay Area from boston
Morning gents,
I am currently in the beginning phases of a job interview with a large tech company in cupertino and am looking to move out to the south bay. Anyone have some suggestions of places to live. Looking for a 2 bdrm no more than 3000 a month with included parking. I currently live in boston so I like walking around in a downtown, but hate traffic. So places I have been looking are Los Gatos, Mountain View, Cupertino, Campbell. Anyone else have some suggestions for a new englander like me? -Scott

Commuting to Cupertino is a bit of a headache, depending on direction. Campbell, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale are probably the most cost effective and best for commute. If you're single, a flat or apartment in Cupertino might work. West San Jose would also work well. Good luck finding a decent house under 3K in Cupertino if you have a family.
Mtn View would give you somewhat of a reverse commute.. However it is a very small suburb and the price disparity between "decent" and "old as hell" is a bit too high. You'll have to compete with a hell of a lot of other dotcom people for living space. Cupertino and Mountain View are probably the most expensive with the least bang for the buck. There's a distinct lack of availability and most of what can be found is either insanely old or too overpriced. Downtown walks are nice, but you will have to adjust for public transportation here. (Or lack thereof.) For nicer downtowns - Campbell, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Los Gatos. Something similar in San Jose = Santana Row. You've budgeted well, shouldn't be hard for you to find a nice place. |

It'll be pretty ugly from LG. There's a large number of people coming from South San Jose using highway 85.. And another massive amount coming from Santa Cruz/coastal areas that kill both 85 and 17/880.
It's only 8-10 miles from LG to Cupertino on 85. However, during commute congestion mixed in with the daily accident.. It'll run you anywhere from 30 minutes to an eternity. That's not even counting the metering lights to get onto the freeway or to merge 17->85. Take the morning commute and multiply it by 1x-1.75x for the trip home. *Edit: If your new gig offers flex-time, LG commute wouldn't be too bad. Carpool lane opens up about 9AM. There are a few different routes using surface streets if you don't mind the lights. The commute home after 4PM would be murder, though. Especially on Friday and/or hot weekend days with tourists going to the beach. Last edited by El Wray; 06-25-2013 at 03:43 PM. |
