this #20 is really irrelevant as it is so low in the chassis...rotating or not...it isnt as big a deal as other rotating mass im gonna get a cf driveshaft and not care a bit about the rear diff

Not to mention its so small in terms of size that it doesn't have the same effect a lw flywheel or lighter wheels will have. The only reason to swap diffs would be dependent on which style LSD you prefer.

I find it hard to believe they could stuff 20 more lbs into the rear differential, just by changing from a clutch type lsd to a torsen. There just isn't enough room in there for 20 more lbs of crap. The differential housings on these cars are so small.
I'm also having a hard time believing the the added torsen unit to the center differential weighs 40lbs. That may be a generous guess. |

The 40 lbs for the center diff IS a guess (I think it may be 40), but anybody that wants to help me find a factual aswer, as to the extra weight of the '06-'07 torsen center, is welcome to do so.
We can make educated guesses, but maybe someone has the physical info. As far as the R180, I can't say that I've found someone that weighed both, but I found two sets of weight info, from misc sources, when comparing the overall weight of an R180 with that of a WRX R160. The construction of the torsen could (I am not giving this as a fact) have 3 pairs of worm gears in the R180 and to me it's plausible that those can be heavier than the clutch pack for the mechanical. The R180 with clutch pack in the Spec C is a fact, via part number. I just want to point out, as you guys start to search the threads, that the threads from 2006-08 have a level of confusion in them, as some were disputing at the time that torsen were installed in the R180, watch for that. The reality, via part number check, is that they were and they started to be there for the year model '07. |

weight reduction exercise
My 2 year old son plays with his cars rough so i had a bunch of broken cars laying around , these are the little pull-back racers at drug stores. the modded one is a skyline.
So the Evo and STi are "stock" and the all silver is the Modded one. Here is how i did it. |

weights of the other cars were around 4oz. if i remember right and the modded was 2oz. i'll try to find pics of that if any one really wants to see them. it was a fun thing to do in place of working on my car it's on the back burner for now. |

Nice mod. My son has one of those little Subaru cars as well. Might need to make it AWD.

So I got an answer about a Sti optional Mechanical center differential, it's weight is about 17 lb.
So I have to revise my estimate to 17-20 lb extra for the 2006-2007 6 speed with torsen center diff. Also I found that the total weight of a torsen rear for a Mustang is 26lb. So therefore the extra weight of a torsen R180 could not be more than a few pounds. So the total extra drivetrain weight of a 2007 vs a 2004-2005, I am estimating between the 6 speed and the R180, little over 20 lb, rotating mass. |

Yes Sir,
But it can be rwd or fwd and twin engine. I should have taken pictures of the first test it was spinning the rims inside the tires for a few inches so i glued the tires to the rims. It would be nice to set up one motor for acceleration and one for distance that would let it get going then the other motor would take over and keep it moving . I am way over thinking this |

I have ordered a 4-point bolt in roll cage with harness bars on each side although I won't be installing it until I buy a new daily driver car some time soon.
I'm planning on removing AC, carpet, roof lining, back seats and seat belts before installing the cage, hopefully that will be enough to offset the extra weight. At least the weight distribution will be a little better too by adding the cage toward the rear of the car and removing the AC from the front. Last edited by JDwhiteWRX; 02-11-2013 at 10:15 PM. |

well.....i finally installed the oswald lw front bumper beam.....and it is
taking whatever weight it ends up being---about 21 or so pounds i guess...off the front of the car so far foreward REALLY makes a difference in the way the car drives i figure that i have taken somewhere around(im NOT l00py d00p and weigh everything to the bleeding gram like some here do ) 125 pounds off the front of the car now, i guess...maybe a lil more and that seems to be the key to the gd chassis......taking the weight off the front is magic for the way it drives....too bloody marvelous now for the #3 li battery and a rear bumper beam and a few other goodies and it should be about done Last edited by Uncle Scotty; 02-11-2013 at 03:09 AM. |

^^^Nice! I did the Oswald front beam too. What's your thought on leaving the OEM rear bumper beam alone simply for better weight balance? I realize overall weight reduction is ideal, but I've been thinking it might be good to keep that extra weight at the extreme rear to help the car rotate. Plus the rear beam install seems like a PITA.
