Default 08/09 STI BBS on a GD, widest tire possible?

With so many GR owners selling off their BBS wheels, more and more of us GD owners are getting them.

My question is how much tire can we put on these without rubbing the strut/coil. the +55 ET is obviously the culprit for being to close, but I just wanted to know what others are running and issues they did or did not have.

My car is running them with 235/40/18's and no rubbing, I wanted to run wider but I think I would need spacers to do that.

Wheel specs:

08/09 STI BBS
18x8.5
ET55
20lbs

how much clearance do you have between strut and tire right now?

Ill see about measuring that up, but I would say no more then 5-7mm.

i see guys with volk ce28ns in 18x8.5 +52 and 255/35/18s (as evidenced in this thread http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=670877) but i'm not sure if they're running spacers. my ssrs are 18x8.5 +48 and with 255/35/18s i have at most 2mm between tire and strut body.

with the +55, i'd stick to a 235/40 personally. you could probably fit a 245/40 but that'll most likely cause rubbing against the perch under compression. 245/35 wouldn't be bad but that's not a very popular size at all.

Fully agree. I'd say you need stock or stiffer suspension to even get away with 235/40/18 though which hopefully you do. Stock struts and lowering springs will give you much more rub from a "too tall" tire like 235/40/18.

245/40/18 is really tall and quite wide for +55. This is just too close to the strut imho to work
245/35/18 would maybe work but a) it's really f-ing close to the strut b) it's shorter than stock. The STi is too tightly geared already and c) tire selection sucks.

225/40/18 or 235/40/18 I would say.

You could get yourself some 7-10mm spacers and run 255/35/18 if you really wanted to with probably just a slight rear fender roll. Spacers are not worth it to me but maybe they are worth it to you. You'd need longer studs too for that length of spacer. Fundamentally though, I just think spacers are never a good idea.

ya I found the 245/35 is the closest to corret size, (excluding the 255/35 which is perfect) as far as going wider. Ill see with the 245/35 and if it's rubs I do have some 3mm spacers I can toss on as those are very safe and itll give me +52.

ya Ive been checking other threads for tires with and the wheel offset but without knowing if they run spacers or not is a big deal.

Im on Coilovers (KW V3) so that makes a difference (good or bad)

yeah, the coilovers make a difference. That's probably why you're not rubbing with 235/40/18 at +55 to be honest. Stock, you'd probably rub a little anyway.

Don't underestimate the gearing shift. Going from 235/40/18 to 245/35/18 costs you almost 3% shorter gears.

ya I figured as much, the gearing change isn't a concern more so getting close to stock size (25") and something alittle wider. Ill just have to give it a try and if I rub a 3mm spacer it will be.

as for the longer spacers, I would only run the ones that bolt on if I was going more then the 3mm slip-ons, but ya running huge tire while being something I would like to do is not something I have to do with these wheels. but I think I could get away with a 245/35/18 with the 3mm spacer.

as mentioned 255/35/18 on a +52 or +48 is done without spacers then I just need something in that range or go alittle narrower and it should work.

Appreciate the input.

I'm at 255 on +48 and you're talking 245 at +55 which is actually 2mm closer to the strut than my setup. I don't know how ppl do it at +52 with 255's. That's 4mm closer than I am. Maybe you have slightly more clearance with coilovers than the stock strut.
