Post Subaru Cleans up at Ft. Meyers ProSolo

We had a great start to this year's ProSolo series in Ft. Meyers, FLA this weekend.

Despite his lack of gold wheels, Eric K. won STS by 1.5 seconds; quite a margin!

Will Conklin and Eric Carman grabbed the 3rd and 4th positions in the 8-car STS field, nice

In GS Neal Tovsen seized 6th place over a '00 Audi TT. Eric Starmer from Melbourne and Katie Lacey from Tampa came out and took 11th and 12th respectively, beating a few out-of-towners. If you guys are on the board, was this your first Pro? (I see you're local)

There was even one Legacy in attendance! Steven Rankins drove down from Boone, NC and got 6th place in STS.

Nice going, guys! I hope we see even more cars turning up at the Pros and National Tours around the country

No SM Imprezas though, lets see some of you turbo guys out next time..

Yes it was my first ProSolo. Quite an experience, I learned more in 2 days than I did last year about driving! Can't wait to do it again! We'll see if my scheadule is flexible enough to make it to Virginia and/or Texas

It really was a great event! And the weather was great too. I'm burnt to a crisp after three days of sun-up to sun-down Florida sunshine. The course was deceiving, what looked tight was actually fast, and what looked fast was actually really fast. And the finish was very technical. After a slalom, big tight offset into what amounted to another slalom into the offset finish. Something clicked on Sunday and I cracked off some super fast runs, in fact if it were not for a cone on my last left side run I would have beat the field by 2.5 seconds. Unfortunately I still had to run off that time for my challenge dial-in. Of course I lost in the first round to Sam Strano, but I picked up the Honda Street Challenge over a wickedly fast Neon with a Stratus engine in it. It was a good race, on a course that was not easy to figure out. All the Scooby guys and Katie too did very well, and have nice cars also. We put my RS and the Legacy up on the scales, mine came in at 2775 and the Legacy somewhere around 3050. Interestingly, the second place STS neon weighed over 2500 pounds, we were all surprised. And the SM Integra with a JR SC was over 2600 pounds. Seems like the RS isn't that heavy after all, huh. Im looking forward to the Petersburg event, and some more STS action.

1st gen Neon is ~2350lb in ACR form, dunno what was up with the STS car. Without AC but plus a "Stratus" 3.0L v6 should be pretty heavy. That is in fact the same 24 valve Mitsubishi V6 as is found in the Eclipse GT and Galant.

I'm absolutely terrified at the speeds the top 3 SM cars ran! Oh well, I'll be at the Lubbock prosolo anyway...

Congrats, Eric.

All I can say is I had an AWESOME weekend. It was my first ProSolo, and I feel the same as Opie: learned more in 48 hours than in the past 2+ years of autocrossing. I'm sure RSChic (Katie) felt the same. All the Central Florida Subarus went in just hoping to have a good time and maybe be competitive. I'd say we all accomplished our goals!

I think my favorite moments were racing Eric Moon in the Integra Type R. We went head-to-head on a number of runs, and continually went back-and-forth before he finally got me in his last run. On top of it all, he's a really nice guy.

Big thanks to everyone involved for the advice and good sport! It's really cool to see that, though it is definitely more competitive, the national events are still very friendly and people are willing to share advice, experience, and the occasional air pump when your tank runs low.

It was great to meet the Steve and all the Erics. We'll definitely do this again!

Of course, it kinda sucks to know that, almost at the exact moment we were getting our awards, one of the best drivers ever passed away.

ColinL - I don't believe that the Neon that ran in STS was an ACR or R/T. Here's a pic: <IMG SRC="http://gulfcoastautocrossers.com/pict1529.jpg" border=0>

And the SM Neon with the Stratus engine was actually a 2.4L 4 cylinder. Still wickedly fast, and not nearly as heavy as the V6.

It's funny, after the first set of runs I kept blaming the tires, the tire pressure, etc for my mistakes. As the weekend wore on, I realized it wasn't the car, it wasn't the tires, it was me making the mistakes. Once I realized that, my runs got better.

Still deciding if I should make the 1,400 mile drive to Lubbock. The 750 mile drive to Petersburg looks like a better choice right now.

EDIT: Duh...I can read. I guess it was an R/T since it says so on the door!!!

I can't imagine a regular 2.4L being that fast. Was it turbo or supercharged? Besides that, the only thing I can think of that would make it really fast would be if they bought one of the old Stratus Touring Car engines from the short-lived US series.

Thumbs up

Check out www.cnnpracing for some fast Neons. The 2.4 liter stratus swap is very common for Neons. They generate gobs of torque. My friend that I only see at Moroso runs his Neon with a Stratus swap and turns 13's. His friend with a built Neon turns 12's!

Well, we know Eric did us proud and Katie didn't do too badly either. What I want to know is how did Ethan do?

Yeah for my first Pro Solo, it was awesome. I sure did learn a lot. To let you know Steven with the Legacy is Pleiades on this board, he did a hell of a job with the legacy. I'm already planing on making my next event and yeah, Texas ain't that far away now is it...

Will (Opie) and Neal (SUV-ETR) sure did us proud and Katie (RSChic) kicked a lot of out of town but her self.. I'm getting worried, she'll be kicking my butt soon enough. What I was the happiest about was the diversity of the top finishers in GS. The Integra was strong, but I think a good driver in any of the top cars is what makes the difference. It was really fun though to watch the Scoobies launch, cause we would stomp almost everyone off the line. Friday with the practice starts was really cool to get 60' times.

To all the other Eric's it was really good to meet you guys and hopefully we'll all meet up again.

Later

Eric
#70 GS and quite happy with my performance against such high quality drivers.
