Question OBS 1.8L stalling after refueling...HELP

Alright, I need some help here.

I have a 95 OBS with a 1.8L engine. The only mod I have is a K&N type cone filter.

Now after I refuel, the car has problems starting up after a bit. It's happened to me four times now. My car usually stalls after I shut it off and have problems restarting, but today it stalled while I was sitting in traffic.

The first couple of times I let it sit for a couple minutes and it starts right up. The last couple of times has taken longer. Between 10-15 minutes. When it happened the last 2 times, I could smell gas when I got out. ANd I have removed the gas cap. Thinking it might have had something to do with fumes and that it needed to breathe(I don't know why). Today I actually drove home with the gas cap off.

Now I'm starting to wonder if it's my air filter. Is too much air getting in and I'm running lean? What happens when your car runs lean? Does it stall? WHat would cause my car to stall?

Anybody else have problems like this?

First I'd do an ECU reset just to be safe. The other thing may be that your gas cap isn't working properly. On some cars (I'm not sure about the Impreza) you'll get a CE light if you leave the cap off. It needs to build pressure or something like that. Just a thought

It probably is something different but make sure the cam and crank angle sensors do not need replaced. Most all of 95 Legacys and Imprezas will eventually have a problem with them. Alot of them were replaced under a recall but even the ones Subaru says were OK were still a bit shakie. Although I have never seen them cause a car to stall, they make starting the car a major PITA and will continue to get worse as time goes on and you will get a fuel smell with them simply because the fuel is going in but not being ignited.

To check them, just unbolt them and if the magnetic part is COVERED with what looks like dirt, they are probably bad. And I don't mean just a little bit of dirt, the bad ones are really covered, the good ones may have a slight ring of dirt around it but not much.

And as Peaty said, try a ECU reset if you never have( if the problem only began after the filter was installed). I have seen a few 95s with intakes so I don't think it is the intake by itelf causing problems. Also, double check every vacumn line you can see.

You can also try to clean the Idle Air Control Valve near the throttle body. These were also notorious for causing problems on the earlier Legacys and Imprezas. They usually cause an erratic idle first, then it gets worse from there.

Thumbs up

I never did an ecu reset, so I'll try that first and work it from there.

Thanks guys.

Maybe you have a bad ignition module. GM and honda are known for this problem.. U might want to check into this. And it is really rare that the crank or cam sensor fails.

Really rare that the cam or crank sensors fail?!!!? Maybe on other cars, but not '95 Subarus. It was one of SOA's largest campaigns ever, not in terms of price, but actual numbers of cars with that possible problem( some early 96's as well). It is a hell of alot more rare for the ignition module to fail on an Impreza then it is the cam or crank sensors( in 95 at least).Where you been newbie?

I recall in the manual for my wife's '99 Forester that it admonishes the owner to be sure the gas cap is always tight. I have no manual for my '98 RS (bought it used) to compare it to, and I have no idea if that would be true of your '95 but I dont think driving with it removed is helping.

The gas cap worry is dumb. I drove around for a month without my gas cap and the only problem I had was vapor lock. It's not the gas cap, at least it wasn't a problem for my 95 OBS.

I had my car fail to start once (a week and a half ago) after hard driving, but it's fine now, so I'm not sure either. I did check my ignition wires to make sure they were tight, one wasn't, so maybe that's what it was.

Personally, I think the ignition starter isn't all that great. Get that looked at, I'm thinking of swapping my out to be safe..
