Default Critique my custom oil cooler idea

Since I'm not thrilled with the quality or the price of any of the oil cooler kits out there I have decided to piece together my own kit this summer. I did some research and found that I can get the parts I need from Pegasus Auto Racing and Racer Parts Wholesale. Here's what I have so far, any comments or suggestions are welcome:

-Mocal half-width 10-row core - $91.99

-Mocal sandwich adapter w/ 180 deg. thermostat - $84.99

-8AN stainless steel braided hose - $5.49/ft. x 6

-8AN 90 degree aluminum hose ends - $18.99 x 4

-1/2NPT-8AN adapter - $4.99 x 2

Total cost: $295.86

There are a few advantages I see with this over one of the off the shelf kits. First, it uses braided stainless lines instead of high temp rubber lines. Although the rubber lines are supposedly good for up to 300 deg. I trust stainless much more, especially since they are run so close to the block/manifold. Also, the Mocal sandwich adapter is pretty nice. It has a built in 180 deg. thermostat, so under normal operating conditions, the oil circulates throught the filter normally but as soon as it reaches 180 deg. the valve opens and allows the oil to circulate through the cooler. I'm planning on giving this a shot probably in May. Any suggestions from those who have done something like this before would be great.

Sounds good in theory, let us know how this works. I'd deffinately be interested in a cheap oil cooler myself. I can't justify the $$$ for a mass produced one.

Looks great!

The only thing I could see being a problem is whether the 90 degree ends are right for all 4 connections... but you won't know that until you actually try to put it on.

Good luck with the install and let us know how it goes.

Sweet!

Good work.

I think I'm going to be needing one this summer. I plan to do some track work and I hear the oil can overheat on the track (road course).

Your setup is $200 less than the Gruupe S kit. I think I'm going to hagve to save this post as a favorite and buy that stuff when I can.

I'd likely order four 90 deg bends,...a couple straight ones and a couple 45 deg bends and return the ones I don't use. Summit and Jegs are both cool spots for that,...oithers too I'm sure. I like it neat.

Where are you planning to mount this ? Are you running a fmic ? Another source for your parts is British American Transfer in Florida. They have all the parts you'll need.By the way what are the dimensions of your core ?

You can get a nice kit on ebay for about the same cost. That's what I've been running since May with no issues at all.

Thanks everyone. I realize the 90 degree ends might not be best for the hose-sandwich adapter connection so I will likely end up using a combination of angles. I am aware that the SS hoses are rubber on the inside, but what I'm concerned about is the outside, which is exposed to hot engine bay components. I saw the kits from BAT and they look very nice, but I'd rather do this myself. I like a good challenge I'm planning to mount this behind the grill, as it will work with both my TMIC setup and whenever I decide to switch to FMIC. The core is 6.62x3" but I'm actually thinking the 13 row is better, as it's another .88" tall.

Am doing something similar...

I have Greddy sandwich adapter $30:

Just got this Flex-A-Lite oil cooler kit for $42:

Oh and I have a Zerosports 180 thermostat used but never used..lol $50

So all for under $150

Already have SPA oil temp and pressure adapter too...

Also think I am going to get a FAL electrice fan for oil cooler with switch, so when I am off the road course sitting I can switch on a fan...

Matt

1) the core on that $40 oil cooler is pretty terrible.

2) good luck when those hose clamps on the barbed fittings let go, dumping all of the oil out of your car. ASK ME HOW I KNOW.

3) also, good luck with the rubber hoses.

You're better off not having your kit on that car at all. I had one on my VW, and while it did make a small difference in oil temps, it was not worth the hassle at all. I'm still cleaning oil off that car.

Looks nice. I have gone back and forth with myself over getting a cooler. Seeing someone piece one together on the cheap makes it more appealing. Let us know how it turns out.

Hell of a lot cheaper than my GReddy oil cooler, and it looks good.

I like it...

-AN lines are the way to go, way cleaner looking, and less prone to leaking

It's not the lines but the connectors that make a difference. I will be using -8AN lines and end fittings but the sandwich adapter inputs are 1/2" NPT so I need the adapter.

Check out ebay. I picked up a nice kit a while back for under $300. I believe the same seller is still selling them but with oil stats now for a little over $300.

It looks like you have some nice parts. I would like to hear how it performs. I'm sure if it did well, everyone would be in line for the "boost junkie" kit!

I was wondering which way you should mount the cooler. With the input / output fittings up the top or bottom?.
