Looking for performance struts for the 97 Outback
Anyone have any experience with aftermarket struts. I was looking at KYB AGX struts, but will my stock tire and rim size rub on those? 205/60/15?
Also won't it lower my car?

They shouldn't. AGXs are made and marketed as stock replacement struts.
I have a set of the RS AGXs on my car currently. I haven't had any rubbing or fitment issues. Brad |

IGNORE THE GT GUYS
seriously, though, AGX's won't work, they'll rub. BTW, your stock size is 205/70/15, not 60 it might work with 60's, but I'm not sure. The tires are too tall, and they'll hit the spring perches, unless you run smaller (shorter) tires. |

Here is the deal on Outbacks. There are no aftermarket struts that will clear the stock 205/70-15 tires. Any currently available strut (other than stock replacements) will also lower the car about an inch. You can keep your wheels and switch to something like 205/60-15 tires (about the same size as Legacy Gt 16" tires). In theory these will make your speedo read fast, but I am currently running Impreza RS 16" wheels and tires and I have not noticed anything. I suspect that Subaru didn't do anything to correct the speedo on Outbacks. Doug |

other struts?
What would be the struts that would allow me to keep closest to original height? What about springs?
Anything out there that'll let me put on 225/45/17's and not have rubbing. |

Anything WILL let you run 225/45-17 tires without rubbing (at least with correct Subaru offset wheels). The diameter of these is the same as that of stock Legacy GT wheels/tires and is much smaller than Outback stockers so there is plenty of room. Doug |

So the basic gist of this is if you want to mod an outback, you will need new wheels and tires.
My plan: -rear strut brace -rear swaybar mounts & endlinks Then, depending on $$$... -Gold P1s w/ 225/45-17 tires -KYB/AGX with some good non-lowering springs -used rally or mud tires for my five 15" stock alloy rims that will fit with the AGX's. (for offroad excursions and rallyx, don't want to scratch the P1s!) If no $$$ available by the time my current tires are shot to hell (shortly...) Then: -Dunlop SP5000 in 215/65/15 (plus zero size, I believe, but should help performance.) on my current 15" rims. Should only be under $500. There is certainly a WRX in my future, but certainly not the very near future. I'm thinking a 2004 or 2005 model. In the meantime, this luxo-bargewagon is all I've got. Might as well make the most of it, and while gold P1's might look rather silly on the Outback, when I *finally* get my WR Blue WRX, they will fit in perfectly. |
