Default AMS lightweight batt install, 2011 STi

Thought I would snap a few photos of the quick install of the AMS light weight battery install. Very nice bracket. Not sure what AMS actually wanted me to do with the install, but this is what I did.

Before:

Small size difference....

Where the new set-up is going

Test fit

What was done to make it fit

Bracket bolted down, nice and tight

Final product

you woulda been better off with a pc680(or a deka).....the ams battery is a rip off

the small agm batteries dont like heat and if you dont make a heatshield and duct some cooling air to it, it wont last long....think a year or so...maybe 2 if ya live in a cool climate

ive had a small agm battery(several actually) under the passengers seat of both my wrx's since 2003 and if ya paid more than $100 for that battery...ya over paid

OP,

What's the measurement between the two hold down posts?

I'm wondering if a Deka ETX20 would fit on this AMS bracket...

OP, or anyone else with experience with light weight batteries, how often do you drive your car? Any problems with letting it sit for a few weeks between drives? or do you use some sort of battery kill? Thanks in advance

a few weeks is likely too much...the factory alarm will kill it after a while....i put a solar cell charger in the windshield and it seemed to help when the car wasnt driven for a while....but i dont know how long/how much it actually helped as I never tested it

3.75" from center to center of the posts for the holder

6.5" from the base to the top of the cross bracket.

Thanks tazswing...

...but I was more interested in the length between the two hold down posts...not center to center.

I'm wondering if a Deka 20 battery would fit between the hold down posts.

ah, ok, subtract like 3mm since the posts are not very thick. the 3.75" is from the center of one post to the other center, aka where the bolt screws in.

looks like these new lithium batteries will be a great way to drop more weight once their price comes down a bit and their reliability becomes known

im not gonna drop $180 or whatever to save #10 on a battery to have it only last a season or 2
but the price comes down a bit and...mebbe

Sorry to disappoint Ron, but we use nearly the exact same battery as the PC680.

It's made from the same parent company EnerSys, has the same dimensions and weight, as well as nearly identical internal elements.

Here's an outline from the parent company of how the Odyssey line was developed off the Genesis EP line which is the battery we chose to use for our kit. You'll notice that the main difference is the Odyssey line has an orange case..

http://www.enersysreservepower.com/p...%20ODYSSEY.pdf

Your time frame for the batteries is about right though. I would expect about 2 years of use from the battery before purchasing a back up. When you figure it's approximately 1/3 the size of a standard battery the life expectancy will follow suit.

Well that is good to know. I was feeling kinda like a jerk there for a second. AMS is not really know for selling junk.

I will likely still wrap the base of the battery in heat reflective tape.

im not ron

and I did ALL that research back in 2003 before I put the pc680MJ in my car and I know all about the whole EnerSys line...i put the pc680MJ under the passengers seat and it made it 5 years.....im on my 3rd agm battery uner the seat, and i went with a deka rebrand from advance auto for ~$90 this time.....its been in there a year now....the first one i got lasted ~2 1/2 years but it was bought 'used' for 1/2 price...i think it had been shorted...but it was cheap and i was broke

anyway.....keep them cool and they last a lot longer...underhood is a BAD idea, really

and these new lithium batteries are the next step

just think.....you can go from a battery that weighs ~40 pounds to one that weighs ~2 pounds

if...IF they last more than a season or 2...well worth it, imo

It wouldn't hurt to do so, especially in hotter climates. Thanks for writing up such a nice installation guide! I'll be sure to send a link to your thread to guys who may need help in the future!

My mistake, I could have sworn that was your name.

I need to take a look at these lithium batteries, haven't seen much about them.

Well I pulled the trigger on the LiFePO4 battery, it only weights 2.5lbs and starts the car right away

Wow! That rule! I love cutting weight off the car.

sorry for the necro post, but this thread has AMS replies and all the relevant information.

http://www.odysseybattery.com/extreme_battery_specs.aspx

has anyone considered the PC950 battery?

it seems like it could fit in the AMS tray if the posts are shortened slightly.

AMS, are the posts threaded all the way through? or would one have to thread after shortening the posts?
